Watched Sunshine this past Friday night.

Good movie, good concept. Didn't really understand the need for the turn in storyline about 1.5 hours in....seemed unnecessary and turned a somewhat believeable movie into :hot: . But all in all, I was entertained.
I like this movie a lot. But yeah, that was a terrible plot device.
Tarantino actually featured this movie when he did a few days of screenings on some movie channell. He thought the first two acts were brilliant but that the third act was putrid and the theme the direct opposite of what made the first two acts so good. He despised the last act but still recommended it due to the tremendous first two acts. I still haven't watched it but will.
I agree with that to an extent. Although the last 15 minutes are beautiful and redeem the movie for me.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure

Love this movie. Haven't seen it in years, and I just rented it for my son. Hilarious.

I forgot that the movie's writer Phil Hartman did a cameo in this

Late to the party, started Season 1 of Mad Men. Got 3 episodes in last night after the World Series.

Wanted to call in sick to finish the whole season today. Really, really solid storytelling.

I meant to do that.Hey, have you seen Big Top Pee Wee? I haven't and I wondered if it was good.

Brilliant. Season 2 wanders a bit, but definitely worth seeing.

:wall: I'm in the same boat. Started Season 1 last monday. Only have 5 episodes of Season 2 left to go which hopefully I'll be able to knock out tonight.Draws me in like none other, sounds hard to believe but the 1960's office culture is nearly as compelling as Baltimore's drug/political culture seen in the Wire.A few months ago I made a claim that Sons of Anarchy was the most entertaining show on television. Scratch that, it is about 20 rungs down the ladder from Mad Men.Don Draper has joined Stringer Bell and Shane Vendrell as my all time favorite television characters. Things didn't end so well for Stringer and Shane.....Best episode in the series so far for me was mid-way through Season 1 involving lunchtime drinking and a double order of oysters.

I found Season 2 to be better than the first. This current season isn't as good but still better than almost anything else on TV.

Loved Big Adventure but Big Top Pee Wee is horrible.

The attention to detail is intense. Layers upon layers of details all accounted for.
Absolutely. Seeing that you're a fan now, this excellent NPR Fresh Air interview with Weiner, Hamm and Roger Sterling is definitely worth listening to.

Interesting. I didn't care for some of the California story. But the season is definitely outstanding television.

Thinner

Stephen King adaptation that doesn't try to be anything its not. Its a morality tale with a point and not much depth. Decent to sit through without much thinking involved or gore shoved in your face. Really good makeup effects and a scene involving Joe Mantegna mounting a one man assault on a gypsy camp with a AK-47, awesome.

2/5

Graveyard Shift

Continuing with the Stephen King theme, this was pretty enjoyable as well despite being nothing more than a basic creature feature. I wish we were given a better look at the bat/rat creature, but it sure beats having CGI shoved down your throat. Brad Dourif has a role made for him as the exterminator.

2.5/5

Bloodsport

Awesome. Chong Li was a bonafide bad ###. Anyone that enjoys the UFC should have this in their film collection. The famous JCVD scene involving being stretched by his arms and legs is killer.

"Now I show you some trick or two!"

Last night I watched Food, Inc.

Really liked it. A must watch for people that have read books like Fast Food Nation, Omnivore's Dilemma, or interested in those topics. There is also a supplemental book titled Food, Inc that is good as well.

Just saw Trans-Siberian railroad...not bad. Woody Harrelson continues to be the most underrated actor out there IMHO.

Paranormal Activity

Couple good scares and some good plot devices. Concept had started to grow thin long before the end and I found myself snickering at stuff I shouldn't have. Not in the same league as Blair Witch.

2.5/5

Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)

This has to be up there with the worst of 2009. Absolutely insulting to the viewer how stupid it is. Only thing worthwhile is hearing Travolta say "bunghole". His over the top cursing the entire movie features some of the worst delivery caught on film. I gave Tony Scott a pass on suspending my belief for Deja Vu but this was 10x worse. Scott's worst film, Denzel's worst performance, complete crap.

Echelon Conspiracy

COmpletely panned and hated by the critics, but it held my attention and entertained me ok. The epilogue was hideous and should be snipped, but other than that two minutes, I thought it was solid. Evidently it has about he same plot as Eagle Eye, but that didn't bother me. Not great but 50 points better that the 0% it gets on Rotten TOmatoes.

Transformers 2 / GI Joe

I tried both of these based on a smattering of positive notes here.

Both were loud, trite and unwatchable. Neither lasted more than 30 minutes in my player.

Just horrible.

The Crew

Vile British crime drama about life in the criminal underworld. Features gay sex (male/female), human waste fetish, and lots of violence. Too gritty and dark to be considered enjoyable, but it was a solid film.

2.5/5

Little Monsters

They don't make pedophile movies like they used to. A few really creepy lines dropped in this. Doesn't have the same feelings of nostalgia other 80s films bring back for me.

2/5

Goldfinger

Still holds up as my all time favorite Bond film. Great villain, great diabolical plot, and Connery at the top of his game as Bond.

The Brothers Bloom - 6/10

I'm not a con man, so I didn't even "get" the con that they were trying to pull. There are only two things that prevent this from being a disaster - a satisfying ending (they DID get that right) and Rachel Weisz  .

Watched State of Play this weekend. I had been in the thriller/action mood for a while, but this did not really satisfy that. Affleck was going through the motions.

Don't you hate the 5 star rating system on Netflix? There needs to be something between "Liked it" and "Didn't like it"

What is your preferred rating system?

Yep, I agree. I often am marking movies as "Liked" or "Didn't Like" when I would have rather marked them as "Meh".

This is how I use the Netflix system as I often look back at my ratings when recommending movies to others or deciding whether or not to watch something again.5 stars- Must Own4 Stars- Must watch again3 Stars- Enjoyable but don't need to watch again2 Stars- Didn't like it for whatever reason, but still decent quality1 Star- GarbageThis way a majority of my ratings are 3 stars. If you critique your movies harsher, you will get better results when it comes to recommendations. Kind of weird marking a really well made movie but something that just wasn't my cup of tea, (example Atonement) 3 stars, but you just have to remind yourself its a like/dislike scale and not a straight quality rating.

I'm sure this is skewed because I enjoy Sam Rockwell more than most actors, but it kept both the wife and I interested. I got the twist pretty quickly, though, so don't expect to have to think too hard.

Hey, anything that gets Ed Asner work, right? Animation is terrific, well written and the kids were engrossed enough to stay quiet through it. It's not a WALL*E or Toy Story ... more Monsters, Inc.

2.5/5This is the fourth or fifth expose/documentary I've seen in this vein, and it seems like they're all rehashing the same stuff at this point. The Monsanto seed saving BS, the antibiotics in meat, the high-fructose corn syrup -- been done. Didn't know chickens were going to market in half the time now they were 50 years ago, though. Creepy.

I would recommend this one, however, for someone who is just getting into this stuff. The film is better edited and written than most.

Astro Boy

Took my boy to see this Friday. It's ok. Kids will enjoy it, though be warned that the first 10 minutes involves a little boy getting killed in an accident.

 I'll be watching this one this week. 89% on RT :jawdrop:

Just got done watching Land Of The Lost, I thought it was a good flick. The female actress in the movie is smokin hot too!!

Also, I watched Inglorius Bastards yesterday at a movie theater that plays movies after they are done in main theaters, but before they come out on movie. It was a good movie aswell.

Ice Age 3: Whatever...whatever... - 5.5/10

The celluloid equivalent of a rice cake. How you can take all that comedic talent and make something so bland is beyond me.

It's not terrible, except for being terribly bland.

Lord of the Flies (1990)

The book is short enough and good enough that I probably should have just picked that up. One of my all time favorite stories, I think the film does justice to it. Some bad acting from the children is a distraction and not much depth in the film version, still better than trying to tone down some of the themes.

2.5/5

saw "the men who stare at goats" last night. very meh. it's got its moments of humor but there really aren't enough of them. the plot is threadbare to say the least. coming out of the theater, it is pretty forgettable, and if that is the case then what is the point?

Wow, that sucks, pretty much sums up how I felt about the Informant after really looking forward it. Guess I'll be waiting for the DVD.

Mongol

Picked this up on BluRay for $9 at Amazon. Spectacular cinematographyand a rousing tale of Gehngis Kahn's ealy life. Its supposed to be the first of a trilogy, but its been a while since released and I have heard no word on the last two installments. I really hope they make them. THis is a superb film that really is worth a purchase, rather than a rental.

illustrated man - fairly obscure but underrated sci fi

rod "don't ever call them tattoos" steiger (who is the real baconator in the kevin bacon game) is a man with skin illustrations that cause disturbing visions in whoever views them, a premise which serves as a vehicle to launch, contained within the larger, more encompassing story arc, three tales by ray bradbury* from the short story collection of the same name. steiger (at his scenery chewing best), claire bloom and robert drivas all play multiple roles, in the larger containing arc and in the shorts. expansively plotted, given that most of the "action" (outside of the three embedded short stories)involves the conversation of two drifters who cross paths by the side of a lake. well conceived and executed, intelligently constructed flashback structure intersects with visions of the future, building suspense. quirky but strangely compelling (sort of like stumbling on a vault of undiscovered twilight zone episodes). haunting, typically eclectic and original score by jerry "planet of the apes" goldsmith. i immediately liked this movie the first time i saw it, yet repeat viewings have only caused it to grow on me even further.

* bradbury's stories can have a way of getting under you skin and touching a nerve (like the martian chronicles), in their sobering and unflinching exploration of some tragic aspects of human nature, and possible dark societal vectors that might await us in the future (wherever we go, there we are! ). not as optimistic (at least in his writing and outlook) as other seminal golden sci fi era writers like heinlein, asimov and clarke, his temperment and sensibilities made him well equipped to conjure up and evoke a powerful sense of dread of the unknown, at times bordering on and encroaching on the realm of horror... kind of like if stephen king had been a brilliant sci fi writer. at his best, he is able to imbue his stories with a depth and dimensionality of character development that can leave the work of less talented exemplars in the genre looking like stiff, cardboard cutouts in comparison.

Rented four for the Halloween weekend and just finished them. They were all very good; no disappointments in the bunch.

Eagle Eye

The premise was, of course, ridiculous, but I thought it was well-acted, fun, and contained some very intense and well-filmed action sequences. Bonus points for being a Chicago movie. Shia LaBeouf is a surprisingly likable actor and has excellent screen presence. And from a shallower perspective, Michelle Monaghan is pretty close to a dream girl for me, and, and looked as good as she did in MI3 and Gone Baby Gone. Good to see Chiklis in an extended cameo as the SecDef. Rosario Dawson was also quite strong. Most of the military sequences were at least plausible, and the cinematography and scoring were above-average for this genre.

7.2/10

The International

This is one of those movies that some people are going to like, and some are going to find pretentious and boring. It's a thriller, but (with one big exception) is relatively low on action scenes. The on-location shooting, in locations all over Europe (with Berlin standing in for NYC in most scenes) and including a relatively rare glimpse of Istanbul, was fantastic, and Clive Owen was in Clive Owen Intense Mode, as he was in Inside Man, but with more of a story to work with. The movie happened to be released in a very timely manner, just as the banking crisis hit home. I rewatched portions of it and listened to the DVD commentary track by the writer and the director, which was one of those "talkover"-type commentaries, but it was still interesting. One downer: Naomi Watts' character is completely superfluous, and apart from some truly laughable dialogue that she exchanges with her New York County DA boss about the meaning of justice, her role was totally forgettable and could have been played by anyone.

7.2/10

Duplicity

Yeah, so the SO is a Clive Owen fan; sue us. I thought this was a cleverly plotted comedy-thriller, which is a fairly difficult genre to do properly. The time progression is non-linear, and the ending is a bit of a surprise. There are loads of solid comedic moments, including a possible nod to "No Country For Old Men" in the dialogue that is hilarious, outstanding performances all around (including critically important supporting roles for Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti), and the corporate espionage theme resonates well. Think "Michael Clayton" as a comedy, without any real violence, and that captures the mood. Well-directed and acted. I hadn't seen Julia Roberts in a movie for a loooong time (since the Ocean series, I think) and I thought she was quite good.

7.9/10

Zodiac

A mostly true-to-life account of the Zodiac murders in an around San Francisco in the 60s and 70s that is gripping, understated, and powerful. Jake Gyllenhaal surprised me with a strong take on the unassuming lead character, there was a wonderful supporting part turned in by Robert Downey, Jr., and Mark Ruffalo was outstanding as the SFPD Inspector who inspired both Dirty Harry and Bullitt (with nods to each in the script). The flick is controversial because it implies one viewpoint on the never-solved case with which many strongly disagree, but I didn't know much about Zodiac going in, so that didn't bother me. This is a SUPERB recreation of the sixties and seventies in San Francisco (I wasn't there, but it jibes with everything else I've read and seen), and is worth watching as a period piece alone. Top-flight direction by Fincher and an outstanding supporting cast. Ione Skye (remember her?) has a great uncredited cameo in what is arguably the movie's scariest scene. Highly recommended.

American Beauty lite with an ending that is much less effective. Eckhart delivers as usual, the kid is pretty good as well. Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Alba are both looking lovely.

My Sister's Keeper

Excellent yet extremely sad story about a young girl dying from cancer and her younger sister who was specifically born to medically help her.

I had to go hug my kids after this one.

This movie is unrealistic, because it expects the viewer to suspend disbelief and imagine that a corporation could be evil :bag:

Finally caught Frost/Nixon on cable last night.

Really got into the movie. Great acting by the guy playing Nixon. Speaks well of the director and actors when you take a story that people know the outcome to and still make it compelling. My favorite of the nominated best picture movies this year. (Still haven't watched Ben. Button)

 Probably one of the best movies I've seen in 2009, and I had no expectations going in, which made it even better. 2007, it turns out, was a *really* good year for movies.
