Really looking forward to seeing Pirate Radio.
There are a couple reviews of it in this thread under 'The Boat That Rocked'. Decent movie. Nothing special.
yupMy earlier review:

The Boat That Rocked (To be released in theaters here in the states as "Pirate Radio" in November): I liked this one. Its about a pirate radio boat operating in international waters of the North Sea in the 60s, while the British government tries to shut them down. Kind of a feel good comedy with a great soundtrack. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nick Frost and a motley crew of DJs provide good laughs throughout. Did I mention it has a great soundtrack? 7.5/10

Movies Ive got ready to watch over the next few days:

Pandorum

Funny People

Jennifer's Body

9

Zombieland

One False Move

I've always loved this movie but had not seen it in 10 years. THis time, the first act was kind of lacking, but picked up steam and was great the rest of the way. Billy Bob Thorton co-wrote the screenplay and stars as a white trash drug dealer. He's great and Bill Pullman is also very good as the hick sheriff in awe of the LA detectives he's working with to try and catch Billy Bob. While this film is not as good as I remember it, its still really solid and I strongly recommend it.

4/5 stars

Finally caught Frost/Nixon on cable last night.

Really got into the movie. Great acting by the guy playing Nixon. Speaks well of the director and actors when you take a story that people know the outcome to and still make it compelling. My favorite of the nominated best picture movies this year. (Still haven't watched Ben. Button)
Excellent movie, and a lot better than Benjamin Button.

The International

7.2/10
This movie is unrealistic, because it expects the viewer to suspend disbelief and imagine that a corporation could be evil ;)
And a BANK, no less!!! Ridiculous! :lmao:

Zodiac

9.2/10
Spot on review. I agree completely.
:lmao: Probably one of the best movies I've seen in 2009, and I had no expectations going in, which made it even better. 2007, it turns out, was a *really* good year for movies.
Fincher is one of the few current directors (Scorsese, PT Anderson, Coens, Arronofsky) where I will just automatically see his new films.

Pandorum - 4/5 - there is hope for good sci-fi yet...
It was nearly a perfect sci-fi movie IMO and easily one of the top 5 five movies I've seen this year.
Agree with it being top 5 of this year so far. But, I wish the filmmakers realized that they didn't need all the monster stuff in it, and that's coming from a guy that loves monster movies. It was a top notch psychological space drama without the gore/creature stuff.

Revenge

Like Kevin Costner. Like Tony Scott. Meh of a movie. Scott did so much better with the "revenge" theme in movies like The Fan and Man on Fire. Revenge actually has very little "revenge" in it. All set up with no pay day. Combo of Costner, Miguel Ferrer, and John Leguizamo vs the bad guys wasn't nearly as cool as it should have been.

2/5

Orphan

More fun than the title might suggest. Solid entry in the horror genre.

3.5/5

The Informers

Big fan of Bret Easton Ellis and most of the movies made from his work, but this didn't transfer well. Basically molesting little kids to an 80s soundtrack.

1.5/5

Employee of the Month (Not Dane Cook Version)

Solid pitch black comedy/crime movie. Example of Steve Zahn's "A" game.

3.5/5

Global Metal - can't really give a full review yet... it was on tv so I recorded it... i only made it 1/2 way. So far what i have seen is very good. It's from the creators of "Metal - a headbangers journey"... which I don't think I have seen.

Allright... I have seen some sort of documentary on metal in the past. Most of them focus on the 'party' and the 'characters'. Kind of like a re-hashing of the glory days of metal... and celebrating the magnitude of the party... purley norh amercan coverage. Global Metal does NOT do this at all.

Global metal makes a literal world tour to investigate the current status of the metal scene in various countries... then through interviews figures out how metal music was introduced to the region. The answers are surprising in particular places. They visit cities where established western metal bands have performed... and some where no western metal band had performed at all.

So far... the countries I have seen in the movie are... Brazil, India, China, Japan, Indonesia... this is waaayyyy more discovery chanel style then it is VH1. Unless it bombs in the second half... I highly recommend...

Finally got to see Up! and thoroughly enjoyed it. The fiancee balled her eyes out. I admit I got a little teary myself. Really funny and sweet. Probably my favorite Pixar movie yet. (5/5)

Greatest Game Ever Played - 7.5/10

I'm a sucker for movies like these. Sure it's "Rudy/Cinderella Man/Seabiscuit on a golf course", but I don't care. The little kid that played the caddy was worth the ticket himself.

Quarantine - 7/10

Scary enough for me.

District B13 - 7/10

Take the Euro-quirk of Run Lola, Run and mash it with the nonsensical plot and frenetic action-porn of The Transporter/Crank and you get this small but exciting and satisfying Luc Beeson story.

I saw this over the weekend also and I didn't really get the point of it either. It didn't really seem to go anywhere. Disappointing - though lots of Amber Heard nudity. So that was nice.

That opening sequence is about as moving as anything I've ever seen.

watched "primer" again the other day. it still holds up pretty well after multiple viewings. it's still a dense narrative where you're entirely sure what is happening some of the time but whatever. reading up on it again, i found myself really impressed with how far they took it. the premise was played out beautifully. really provocative, thoughtful film. carruthe needs to do another movie.

In Bruges

Excellent movie with several laugh out loud moments. I was less interested in the violence towards the end. But top notch writing and acting in the movie. Colin Farrell doesn't always get to sink his acting teeth into all his movies, but he was fantastic in this one.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Lot of wasted potential here, they had a concept and no story. A cookie cutter movie if there ever was one trying to get by on curse words. Piven should stick to Ari Gold and cameos until Entourage is over. Ving Rhames slept through his role.

2/5

Star Trek

Didn't think I'd buy into all the hype because I'm more of a Star Wars guy myself. All kinds of awesome. Chris Pine does the Captain Kirk role proud. Best blockbuster since Iron Man.

I saw this in the theatre when released and loved it. Its on HBO now and I loaded it to my dvr. I am anxious to see if it holds up to a second viewing. From memory I give it a solid 4/5 stars, but I'll report back with a second viewing update.

Absolutely. I've seen quite a lot of Ferrell movies. But this film and his other recent efforts in Cassandra's Dream are the two movies where I realized that Ferrell is a top notch actor.

Tigerland down?He was great in In Bruges, but he knocked his role in Tigerland out of the park. Haven't seen Cassandra's Dream, I refuse to watch any Woody Allen movies for some unknown reason.

The Gods Must Be Crazy

People consider this a classic? This reminds me of the kind of stuff I used to sleep through in 7th grade social studies class. Couldn't get into it at all.

Couldn't sleep last night so I caught X-Files: I want to Believe.

OMG was that bad. I can't find one redeeming thing to say about it.

I didn't think it was terrible, but it was just like a normal episode that was a little bit longer. Not like a movie. And if it was an episode, it would have been mediocre.

Couldn't sleep again last night so I watched No County for Old Men.

I have to be honest. It may have been the worst "OMG you have to see this great movie" movie I've seen since Titanic. The acting was great, and Tommy Lee Jones played his role very very well - and the hitman was entertaining - but the story was terrible and told in a terrible way. :towelwave:

I guess having low expectations helped, but The Last House on the Left was pretty good. I think Garret Dillahunt is becoming one of my favorite actors. Not sure if I should put this in a spoiler tag but there is a rape scene that is particularly brutal and disturbing. Very tough to sit through and it took away from the rest of the film, imo.

this is pretty much identical to my initial impression (just saw for second time - theatre and blu-ray)... not just the moving part, but to encapsulate and convey the sense of a life (actually two lives) in a several minute vignette was as masterful as anything i've seen in cinema by kubrick, kurosawa, hitchcock, etc.pixar does seem to be getting better & better... i thought ratatouille was the best yet, than thought up surpassed it.

finally saw most of in bruges last night, but started it late & didn't finish... i'm glad they still make movies like this (from the hitman, dwarf, hooker genre)...

star trek was a great reboot in the casino royale, nolan-helmed batman vein... didn't realize before the spot on bones (karl urban) was the hitman that took out matt damon's german girlfriend (run lola run) on a bridge in india in the second bourne movie...

this page made me want to check out primer again... definitely a thought provoking movie...

DVRed a sidney poitier festival (pressure point, brother john, patch of blue)... brother john - a black man that may not be human causes a big reaction in the southern town where he was born... i realized at one point (he is in a jail cell with will geer) that as an actor his mere presence is more powerful than most actor's performances...

Toy Story 3 in 2010 should be a lot of fun.

Sons of Anarchy- been trying to get this for a month

i have been recording season 2 on my DVR

anyone watch this show?

Funny People: No funny people in this movie. I didn't laugh at a single bit of the stand up in it. The only humorous parts were Sarah Silverman and Ray Romano... everything else was blah. The story was good but with this cast I was expecting comedy, not drama. It was also waaaay to long. 2/5

Drag Me To Hell: I agree with what most of the other people have said. Good start, builds some nice suspense but then completely falls apart in the 2nd half. 2/5

Love me some SoA.I've posted this before in here, but I love how it tries to be "authentic" but not too worried about "realistic". Just like the Shield was. It will never be a critical darling, but man is it a lot of fun and there aren't many boring episodes if any at all. Not much difference in quality in the two seasons, I've seen every episode so far.

:lmao: Agree 100% on both reviews.

Rush

1991 drug/crime movie with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Patric as undercover narcs, who start to like the drugs they are supposed to be buying as evidence a little too much. Very well done, but hard to watch in some places. 2nd only to Requiem for A Dream when it comes to drug danger deterrent movies. Reminded me a lot of Freidkin's To Live in Die in LA with how it pulled no punches, was unpredictable, and gruesome. Awesome ending.

Howard The Duck

Was always aware of this train wreck but never took the time to watch it. Before Lucas created Jar Jar Binks, there was this monstrosity. Watched it with my 2 year old even though a lot of parts were probably inappropriate for him. All the explosions and corny special effects add a little value to it. The scorpion/Rancor creature at the end was actually pretty cool and may have been an 80s icon if it were in any other movie.

1.5/5 (Fun in a Mystery Science Theater sorta way, nothing else)

:lmao:Ok, as a disclaimer, I actually fell asleep in the theater the first time I tried watching this, but I've seen it 5-6 times since it was released on DVD. It may require more attention to detail and independent thinking than a lot of audiences are willing to put into it, but it is far from a terrible story. Actually, it is a timeless story, one that is both complicated, yet can be broken down to simple metaphors and symbolism. A lot of it may have been abstract, but its all there, just like a picture. It is arguably the best work from arguably the greatest living american author and was taken nearly scene for scene, detail for detail, from the book. I would suggest giving it some time and try it again sometime even if its years from now, you may catch a lot of stuff you missed the first time.

Finally rented Synecdoche, N.Y. the other night, off of people's recs in this thread. Won't catch it for a while, but looking forward to seeing & reviewing.

Glad that Star Trek is getting some love. I'm a huge Trek fan (since I was a kid), saw it twice in the theater and loved it. Pretty sure I'll be getting it on DVD for Christmas so I'm not sure if I'll rent it before then.

I think NCFOM is a masterpiece. I can see why the pacing would be off-putting to some people, but I'm genuinely intrigued when someone says that it has a terrible story.

No Country for Old Men compared to Titanic?Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but in some cases it's probably just better to say it didn't do it for you. The Princess Bride is a beloved movie that didn't do it for me, but I can acknowledge its strengths and appeal. In regards to No Country for Old Men, to say the story is "terrible" and told in a "terrible" way is simply not correct.

The Shortcut: Teen horror flick about a crazy old man who kills anyone that takes a shortcut through his property. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It is by no means a masterpiece but it has some appealing qualities. Normally a movie involving high school kids has horribly bad forced dialogue. Not this one. They actually acted like high school kids! The killer isn't some deformed, mutated freak like most slasher films. Just a crazy old man. There isn't any added gore or 'jump scares' to build the suspense. Solid movie for the genre. 4/5

Maybe. Maybe I was more tired then the movie deserved but it just didn't do anything for me.

Good movie. Patric was in a noir thriller around that time named After Dark, My Sweet. Highly recommended.

It's a great movie. It breaks a lot of rules, which is why I think it gets some bad reviews. The protagonist has an unceremonious fate, and the ending is not typical. But The Coens make movies like no one else.

Hamlet 2

Silly comedy about a bad film actor that becomes a high school drama teacher. What a great little gem this movie is. It's a farce, so some of the material doesn't work. But I laughed out loud several times. Highly recommended.

Cool. Never heard of it. Bumping it to the top of my queue. Worthwhile noir is few and far between these days, and by these days I mean the last 30 years.

Meh. I could appreciate this film's twisted sense of humor but also thought it wore thin pretty quick.
