Youth in Revolt

A little darker than I would have guessed, and it was probably a great book, but they seemed to try to pack too much into this film. Buscemi's character was about as boring as I've ever seen him, and I could have used a lot more Liotta. Fred Willard and Justin Long were great in limited work as usual. I am about Michael Cera'd out, but this is about almost as good of a role for him as George Michael Bluth.

3.5/5

I'm a sucker for coming of age films, and there have definitely been a lot worst entries than this.

I posted a similar review earlier. Cera was hilarious as Francois (I think that was the name) but dull as usual in the main character role.

I'm sure he was a very nice kid before becoming a star. But his Francois character was more how I've seen him act in real life and on internet shorts. He should embrace his own ridiculousness and take more chances being an #######, instead of still relying on selling us this nice guy, sappy stuff, over and over again.

Not a big fan of older movies but I thought this one was terrific. The scenes of smoke filled rooms showing how the police and the mobsters are really one in the same was excellent. And Peter Lorre's performance is a home run.

It's even more interesting considering the context of the film being pre-Nazi Germany.

Youth in Revolt - I agree with what has been posted in here already. I laughed out loud several times, but there seemed to be something missing, and it fell apart at the end. (3/5)

Just realized that the only David Lynch related movies I've seen are The Elephant Man and The Straight Story. And he was only the director for those. Also never saw a single episode of Twin Peaks.
Twin Peaks is a lot of fun. While it does get very weird, it could be the most accessible Lynch product.
It was one of the most inventive and unique TV series of all time right up until they unmasked the killer. After that, Season 2 spiraled wildly out of control and pretty much sank into the toilet. But the first season in particular is damn near perfect television in my opinion. While Lynch gets a lot of credit and justifiably so Mark Frost's input should not be ignored. Oh, and "Fire Walks With Me" was pretty awful in my opinion. Lynch rarely makes boring films but he doesn't always make very good ones. This would be an example of that.

very true. most people will remember him as just slightly creepy in films like "the maltese falcon" and "casablanca". his performance is "m" is definitely his best work because it is very intense. he was just superb in that role.

I've been meaning to see this for years.

I agree that the show was best before the killer is revealed. Although even with Lynch's failures, I still am amazed at the sheer lunacy.

Agreed on Season 2. It was a hit and miss. Couple of scenes stand out in Season 2. The scene in the jail cell where Leland Palmer killed himself and Agent Cooper held him in his arms as he died and where you see Bob charging up to kill Laura. That scene still gives me the shivers

Tetro

Francis Ford Coppola's newest effort. Mostly filmed in black and white, it's a stunning movie. Vincent Gallo is good, as usual. An interesting movie, but this will only appeal to art house fans.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Just started it tonight. It's exactly as ####ty as I thought it would be. Could someone help me out here? How is it that Wolverine and Sabertooth were alive during the Civil War? I never read an X-Men comic that implied Wolverine was immortal.

The Road

Just as bleak and dark as the book. Which meant that it took all the good and bad of transferring it from book to screen. Too slow at moments. Excellent adaptation and great score from Nick Cave (not as good as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford but good non the less).

"Adventureland" - a mopey romantic comedy for the younger crowd. Not really very funny, but it has good character development. 2.5/5

Not a very good movie from the comic book adaptation genre. Not sure if they adapted it from the comic book lore but Professor X suggested in the first movie that Wolverine could be extremely long lived due to his healing powers.

High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story

Decently made and Imperioli is pretty good as Ungar, but they didn't portray him as nearly the degenerate gambler and junkie he was. He was 100x worse than the worst they show here. Watching Owning Mahoney instead if you want to watch a film on compulsive gambling.

2/5

I enjoyed this, but mostly because it was Imperioli playing Ungar

I believe the Nazi's used it as kind of a propaganda film... although I don't really want to use the word propaganda because I believe it was to show people the existence of pedophilia. Just something I came across at one point not sure how accurate it is but I know the Nazi regime doesn't have anything to do with the missing parts of the film.

I enjoyed Adventureland immensely. I though Kristin Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig were all fantastic. It also had some awesome tunes.

i think that lorre was a jew had more to do with "M" being outlawed and used as propaganda than anything else.

It sure doesn't translate well on screen. All that said, I think Liev Schreiber is criminally underutilized.

In fairness, I haven't finished it yet. I did really like the scene where the guy deflects all those bullets with the samurai sword.

Ronin

Re-watched this movie yesterday. This is the last really good DeNiro drama. After Ronin, he went on to drek like Meet the Parents and Righteous Kill. While the second half gets kind of tedious, I really enjoy the first half. Frankenheimer knows how to build tension in an action sequence. Jean Reno is always good, and the early interaction between the individuals in this gang is excellent.

If youre a big fan of X-Men, which I am not, you might not like it as much because of the storyline. Im assuming the 1st 3 were more in line with the comic or even TV show storyline that this one was, but I thought the action was better in this one and it was more entertaining

Ronin is awesome, but DeNiro has had a few good movies since then. I actually thought Meet the Parents and Righteous Kill were both great, although I know im in the minority on the latter. The Good Shepherd, Meet The ####ers, City By The Sea, and Men of Honor were all solid. The Score is great, I dont know how anyone couldnt love that one, underrated performance from Ed Norton in it as well.

The Score was good. I hated Meet The Parents and Meet The Fokkers. Analyze This had some laughs.

I Sell The Dead.

This movie should have been right in my wheelhouse but it was rather forgettable. It actually was rated a 77 on RT and isn't horrible but just not great.

Ooooo yeah. I really liked that movie.

Watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid tonight for the first time (FINALLY!). Awesome movie. My friends have always told me to see it and I understand why. This is the ultimate buddy flick and a great western to boot. Redford and Newman have such a great dynamic that I think my friend said it best: I wish they had made more movies together.

Speaking of De Niro: I bought The Untouchables on Thursday night. :lmao:

They did make one more movie together The Sting. Both excellent buddy movies

Yes I've seen the Sting. I watched it at 3 AM which was a mistake. I'll be revisiting it at some point. Robert Shaw is one of my all time favorites.

Here is a bit of trivia on Butch Cassidy from IMDB. Jack Lemmon turned down the role of Sundance because of a scheduling conflict with The Odd Couple (1968). :lmao: That would have been totally wrong

If you're talking the blu ray version, Morricone's score sounds awesome!Great film.

Just watched The Book of Eli. Enjoyed the movie, didn't like the big twist at the end. But good acting all around. Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman, great as usual. Mila Kunis was the surprise. She held her own.

And I liked the old couple. Good comic relief

Adventureland is definitely a movie that was marketed incorrectly. I don't think I was alone in expecting more of a Superbad comedy, but this one as more of a dark romantic comedy. I remember really not liking it, but a lot of that couldn't been the expectations.

Mad Max - OK... The Road Warrior was better. The ending was better than the rest of the movie. I might not have watched the Road Warrior if I saw this first and really feel like it's only a set up for the Road Warrior which, as previously stated, is a better movie.

Agreed. The ending of MM was all kinds of awesome. Filmmakers have been trying to replicate that intensity and concept of that scene for decades.

The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you're lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go.

Giving the timing of the movie I'm guessing Alan Moore stole the idea for Rorschach in the graphic novel version of Watchmen.

I havent seen it yet (got it on teh DVR) and I dont remember the previews/trailer really, but I didnt expect a Superbad vulgar language type comedy. Felt more like an indie comedy so dark romantic would make sense to me.

Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that? Love AoD. One of the most quotable movies of all time. I would have trouble keeping it off of my 'Stranded on a desert island" list.

Nothing unique about this movie, but it's worth a viewing.
