"Adventureland" - a mopey romantic comedy for the younger crowd. Not really very funny, but it has good character development. 2.5/5
I enjoyed Adventureland immensely. I though Kristin Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig were all fantastic. It also had some awesome tunes.
Yeah I meant to mention the soundtrack, good stuff. The movie itself wasn't that bad, just not what I was looking for.

Watched The Messenger tonight. Ben Foster was just fantastic. One day he'll get the credit he deserves. This was the most powerful movie that I have seen from last years lineup. I liked this far more than the Hurt Locker. I think the Hurt Locker was an action movie hiding under the mask of a war movie and I feel as though the Messenger was a war movie hiding under the mask of an arthouse film. The acting was top notch and while I understand Woody's nomination he was overshadowed by a long shot by Foster. I don't know why the Even Stevens kid gets all the play and Foster still walks around as pretty nameless besides those that are very aware of movies. I can't say enough about him and this (along with 3:10 to Yuma) shows that he is going to be a very big name some day.

Edit to add: Saw Toy Story 3 today and it was good. Not spectacular and didn't leave me with a very memorable impression. Worth taking the kids too for sure but I don't think it should receive all the awards other Pixar films have received, especially if How To Train Your Dragon lives up to its billing (haven't seen it yet).

Havent seen this yet, but I agree Foster is one of the best going around his age. Albeit over the top at times, I thought he was also great in Hostage and Alpha Dog.

Two more entries from the Chicago International Film Festival:

Timecrimes: Extremely low-budget, time-travel/suspense movie from Spain. A bit tedious, and all plot developments save one twist at the end could be seen from miles away. Still, for what it was, not bad. 3/5
Watched this tonight and I was very impressed. I never really perceived it as a low budget film. The special effects were minimal and the story really did not require a huge budget. I am not normally a fan of time travel movies, but this one was rock solid as a drama/mystery/suspense yarn that happens to involve time travel. Kind of how Vonnegut used to inject it into his novels- not so much as what the story was about, just another element in the story.

I could not believe how much I liked this film. It was very clever and original- it kind of reminded me of Memento in how it used a psychological/supernatural element injected into a well-above average mystery/thriller, using that element as one of the plot devices, not what the story was truly about.

I checked rotten tomatoes to see what others thought and it found that it got 87% from the top critics (88% overall), so I am not alone in my positive reaction to this one.

I really recommend this one, and even tho its subtitled, it also has an excellent English dubbed version, in case you're one of those who avoids subtitles like an illiterate avoids a scrabble tournament.

4.4/5 stars
Just caught this tonight, and I want to echo that this is definitely worth hunting down as a rental.

How To Train Your Dragon was excellent.

Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that? Love AoD. One of the most quotable movies of all time. I would have trouble keeping it off of my 'Stranded on a desert island" list.
Gimme some sugar, baby.
Oh that's just what we call pillow talk, baby, that's all.

Good, bad...I'm the guy with the gun.

A Serious Man...seriously sucked.
This was one of the funniest movies of the past couple of years, IMO.
Aside from the intro scene, I hated everything about it.
I would just stay away from Coen Brothers movie's in the future. That movie most certainly did not suck and was probably the most intelligent movie written last year (along with Inglorious Bastards). A lot of people can't get into the Coen's though and that's cool.

I actually enjoy most of their movies.

I was underwhelmed on my first viewing too. But you gotta admit the Korean kid was hysterical.I will probably watch it again as I have found their movies seem to be better upon multiple viewings. I really didn't like Big Lebowski or Raising Arizona the first time I saw them and now I count them among my favorite movies.

I Sell The Dead. This movie should have been right in my wheelhouse but it was rather forgettable. It actually was rated a 77 on RT and isn't horrible but just not great.
Just watched this last night. Right there with you on the review. It was just meh. Like a six out of ten? Not that memorable. Not bad, but just not that good.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Just started it tonight. It's exactly as ####ty as I thought it would be. Could someone help me out here? How is it that Wolverine and Sabertooth were alive during the Civil War? I never read an X-Men comic that implied Wolverine was immortal.
I said the same thing less than a week ago but Socrates said something the explain that.I thought it was better than the other 3 X-Men movies
In fairness, I haven't finished it yet. I did really like the scene where the guy deflects all those bullets with the samurai sword.
If youre a big fan of X-Men, which I am not, you might not like it as much because of the storyline. Im assuming the 1st 3 were more in line with the comic or even TV show storyline that this one was, but I thought the action was better in this one and it was more entertaining
X 1 and 2 are very good. i think X2 is the best comic book movie ever made along with dark knight. the wolverine movie was just not done right

Starman - Not Carpenter's best but certainly a fun movie to watch. Carpenter touches on a lot of genre's throughout his career and here he turns away from his action/horror roots and gives a lighthearted look at humanity through the eyes of an alien (Jeff Bridges). If you are a Carpenter fan or in general a Sci-Fi fan I recommend throwing it on your queue and giving it a shot.

Gran Torino - the acting sucked. the writing sucked. probably Clint's worst performance ever. but somehow it worked :lmao: 6.8/10

Finally finished this one. I must say that despite several epic failures, I enjoyed this movie.

That's about the perfect review of this movie. I didn't think Clint was as bad as you did. But the movie is entertaining. And the end was a big surprise to me. I really liked how that movie concluded.

I wanted to like it and it had all the ingredients, but for me- it just couldn't pull it off as a cohesive whole. Because of the wasted talent and premise undermined by poor direction and focus I can only give it four to five stars (out of 10), depending on how charitable I am at the scoring table.

watched all season 1 of Twin Peaks due to this thread and most of season 2.

Once David Ducovney showed up in a dress i just couldnt handle it anymore. Maybe it just doesnt hold up through time or maybe its just not my thing.

When in Rome

Couple parts made me laugh, but it's basically Kristen Bell in a Ben Stiller vehicle. Dumb. Jon Heder and Dax Shepard are pretty funny in bit parts.

1.5/5

Watched Shutter Island last night. Had most of it figured out before the movie began, and it was STILL a pretty good movie. Beautifully shot and very well acted. I loved that the story was on multiple levels, and after viewing, people could still question what was really real. Very well done. (4/5)

The scene

Raging Bull - somehow never saw this until this weekend on a plane...obviously a fantastic movie, and simply put one of the best acting performances I can remember by Deniro. Pesci and Moriarty are great as well...amazing they could stand up well next to Deniro considering how inexperienced they both were at the time.

The Deniro ring entrance scene gave me goose-bumps...is that the scene and song Tony Soprano references?

No. Not really.

The Special Relationship

HBO scores another hit with this original movie about the friendship between Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. HBO Films cranks out so many great movies, it's just incredible. This movie is a lot of fun. Dennis Quaid plays Clinton and Hope Davis nails Hillary Clinton. Highly recommended. This isn't a love letter to Blair or Clinton. It shows both men's strengths and flaws.

I am guessing it's available on Comast on demand on on re-runs on HBO.

Yeah the kid driving the Torino with Eastwood singing in the background was all kinds of awesome.

Yeah I thought we established the fact that Raging Bull is the worst movie in the history of entertainment (that includes cave men banging sticks around a fire).

I'd rather watch Raging Bull a dozen times before I had to watch either Napoleon Dynamite or Borat again.

Somehow I ended up watching The Orphan last night.

Creepy kid.....disturbing stuff...not a great movie at all. Worth one watch. Bizzare twist/payoff (which we thought runied the movie).

2/5 stars.

I like this one, too."Green means go. Red means stop. Yellow means drive very fast."

Mrs. Hooter picking the rentals again?
You know it. It could have been worse, but this is just so ridiculously formulaic, that its hard to appreciate any of it. I have seen my share of movies like this that didn't make me crack a smile, so it earned the extra half point. But even if you haven't seen this, you have, at least three times.
