Absolutely. That's how I approached Get Him To The Greek, which I thought was very funny.

Couple parts made me laugh, but it's basically Kristen Bell in a Ben Stiller vehicle. Dumb. Jon Heder and Dax Shepard are pretty funny in bit parts.

You know it. It could have been worse, but this is just so ridiculously formulaic, that its hard to appreciate any of it. I have seen my share of movies like this that didn't make me crack a smile, so it earned the extra half point.But even if you haven't seen this, you have, at least three times.

I wake up and thank god every day that Mrs. Dogg hates romantic comedies.

Watching Generation Kill right now, loving it

Gotta get the book.

I love this miniseries. I begged my friends to watch it. It's the most realistic war drama I've ever see.

Antichrist....Almost 2 hours of artsy garbage, IMO. The last half hour is entertaining, but its not worth struggling thru the first 80 minutes to get to that part. Willem Dafoe borders on annoying in this movie, and his grief stricken wife is even more annoying. Gets +1 for all the primal sexytime......2/10

Doesnt provide info about what this company is/does exactly, doesnt explain why they are currently struggling where as 6 months ago they were living the high life, and doesnt give the viewer a background as to why the brothers decided on this path, their family problems, etc. Adam Scott was solid in a different role than Ive ever seen him, as a mild mannered, newlywed father and computer geek. Josh Hartnett was intriguing as the other brother and CEO of the company, a character that appears brash and simple at first glance, but there is more depth to than they really attempt to get to. I thought the movie was decent, but that and the aforementioned other complaints, as well as a bunch of business/stock market talk that I couldnt understand half of the time lowers the enjoyablilty and increases the frustration. I did like the ending though, which wasnt exactly a twist but interesting nonetheless. Hartnett was good and the most interesting part of the movie. I think he is a solid actor that doesnt get the credit he deserves, and has built a decent but not spectacular resume.....5/10

Adventureland... Basically was what I was expecting - an offbeat, indie-ish comedy - and I loved it. Didnt realize it was going to be based in the late 80's, but I loved that element of the movie, thought they did a good job with it, and as it goes on I really got caught up in the atmosphere. Didnt go into it knowing it was based on/filmed at Kennywood here in Pittsburgh, but that made it more relatable to me from the get go. The 2 lead characters I found to be very interesting in their own ways, with much more depth/development than you typically see in a movie like this. Although all of the characters may not be likeable - Ryan Reynolds and Frigo come to mind - I thought every single character was fantastic. Frigo was hilarious. Only part that seemed unnecessary was making Eisenberg a virgin through 4 years of college, and now all of a sudden he can rail the 2 hottest girls of the amusement park; seems pretty implausible. As a whole, definitely not a gut busting comedy but there were plenty of funny parts for me and around a dozen lines that made me laugh out loud. Great dialogue in at least a handful of scenes, as well as the soundtrack and score by Yo La Tengo. I thought the movie had a lot of charm and personality, something thats a rarity these days and made me like it even more. I still havent seen most of the more heralded movies from 2009, but I would think this would make my top 10...8.4/10

This movie looks awful. I couldn't even finish Von Trier's "Breaking the Waves." With these two movies and the equally awful looking "Dancer in the Dark," Von Trier appears to be on a list with Michael Bay as directors that we should avoid at all costs.

I probably bumped it up a little because I thought Hartnett keeps it interesting the entire time, despite how like I said, they dont supply very many details and leave you basically in the dark. Agree about the pretentious part, and I think that may be part of the reason for the lack of explanation. I need to really dislike a movie and wish I never watched it to go much lower than 3.5/10, sort of like Antichrist

I can't comment on his early movies because I haven't seen them. But it's as if this guy is daring the viewer to snap the DVD in half.

Synecdoche, New York -- I have no idea why this movie has received so much praise. It is as if the industry admires Charlie Kaufman so much that they wanted to give him this gift. This movie was the most mind boggling (not in a good way) movie I have seen since Southland Tales. All the ideas presented have no direction and no conclusion. Character after character is introduced then disappears all without a purpose, all without a structure. Perhaps that was the intent of Kaufman to place the main character down the path of his own destruction by creating a world of false realities and then demonstrating them to the audience in the same fashion as the false world that has been created. I had a headache after the first hour and then gave up hoping for some structure figuring that the winding path would have a conclusion to the twists I was running down. Instead I was lead down more paths. If this movie is genius I am glad that I fall into average on scale of intelligence.

i saw the first one in the theater maybe ten years ago. 6 hours and i was entertained.

This was way too tripped out for my 2 year old, not what I expected. I'm not a fan of anime and this did nothing for me, but I didn't pay much attention to it either.

The story is meaningless but the artistry is absolutely astonishing and this movie is worth watching for that alone.

I even sort of enjoyed the style of Southland Tales and until re-watching it for the most part enjoyed it. I don't really have any desire to give Synecdoche another shot and am still confused as to why it received so much love other then people assuming they "get" Kaufman. Reading reviews suggesting different theories only to have other people disprove the review. This wasn't like a Coen movie that at times on first watching seems over your head but then you find was carefully constructed. This was random ideas being spliced together to try to cover the various events life tosses at people in a very unsuccessful manner because the director refuses to give any clue to the audience as to what is going on.

There are definitely references, including a direct reference to Ponyo turning into sea foam, but it's different enough that it's its own story.And really, the story is typical "G" rated, Japanese anime type fare. Fish turns into girl and only a little boy's love can get her what she really wants (sounds creepy - it's not).

The reason to watch it, and it is a good reason, is that the drawings are truly magnificent.

As a Lynch fan, I like weird, but I couldn't really do Naked Lunch either. Maybe I will revisit someday, but I didn't make it through it in my only attempt.

Ninja Assassin: Holy crap this movie is all kinds of awesome. The gore was awesome. The weapons were awesome. The action was awesome. In summary, awesome. FYI, I didn't give two ####s what the plot was. I wanted to see some awesome Ninjas kick some ### and they did. 10/5

Note: I finally got my home theater setup after about 7 months without it, so that may have something to do with why I liked this movie so much. Don't bother watching this movie without Blu-ray and surround sound.

Definitely entertaining but when so much of the martial arts was just a bunch of people doing flips with CGI weapons it takes something away from it.I am still floored by the martial arts displayed in Ong Bak. Tony Jaa did some mind bending stuff. I need to find out who the fight coordinator was on that film and check out more of his work.

Watch Ong Bak 2. Now. You will be pissed at yourself that you did not watch it sooner.

Has anybody seen a good horror movie in the last few years. It's a genre I love, but am usually disappointed in the movies that are coming out.

What kind of horror? Slasher? Monsters/aliens? Psychological? Ben Affleck?

Don't care - anything that people thought was good. I've enjoyed everything from 28 days later to The Orphanage, and even liked the reboot Halloween (the first one, anyway).

I liked Martyrs okay, but thought Frontiers was horrible. It's basically "foreign language Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

So, this weekend I watched Martyrs. Maybe (probably?) the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I still don't know what to think of it. I think I liked it? And hated it.

Has anybody seen a good horror movie in the last few years. It's a genre I love, but am usually disappointed in the movies that are coming out.

Just watched a couple that were ok time wasters.Machine Girl lives in the Quentin T "Kill Bill" world of Hanzo swords, evil Yakuza and chopped limbs spraying geysers of blood. The title character had an arm chopped off, and the nub has been fitted with a machine gun that looks like it was pulled off the side of a Vietnam era helicopter. The plot has her out for revenge for the murder of her brother by the local gang led by the Yakuza's priviledged son. LOTS of eye candy in this one, with three insanely good looking oriental women in big roles.

Botched is a strange movie about a robbery gone very, very wrong. Steven Dorff robs an ancient artifact from the Ivan the Terrible era, and finds that Ivan's descendants aren't ready to part with it. Dorff and his gang, along with a group of people that unfortunately ended up on the same elevator, run for their lives on an abandoned floor of the building....or is it? It goes from serious robbery to funny camp in the first half to just plain silly in the second half.

Both movies usage of stage blood would have made Herschel Gordon Lewis blush, and aren't for the squeamish.

Synecdoche, New York -- I have no idea why this movie has received so much praise. It is as if the industry admires Charlie Kaufman so much that they wanted to give him this gift. This movie was the most mind boggling (not in a good way) movie I have seen since Southland Tales. All the ideas presented have no direction and no conclusion. Character after character is introduced then disappears all without a purpose, all without a structure. Perhaps that was the intent of Kaufman to place the main character down the path of his own destruction by creating a world of false realities and then demonstrating them to the audience in the same fashion as the false world that has been created. I had a headache after the first hour and then gave up hoping for some structure figuring that the winding path would have a conclusion to the twists I was running down. Instead I was lead down more paths. If this movie is genius I am glad that I fall into average on scale of intelligence.

I like a lot of weird crap that general audiences hate. I almost always love analyzing these type of mind #####, even the aforementioned Southland Tales.But I didn't "get" this film either, I'll give it a try again in a few years.

As do I. Some of my favorite films are Brazil, Naked Lunch and Orson Welles' version of The Trial. I even sort of enjoyed the style of Southland Tales and until re-watching it for the most part enjoyed it. I don't really have any desire to give Synecdoche another shot and am still confused as to why it received so much love other then people assuming they "get" Kaufman. Reading reviews suggesting different theories only to have other people disprove the review. This wasn't like a Coen movie that at times on first watching seems over your head but then you find was carefully constructed. This was random ideas being spliced together to try to cover the various events life tosses at people in a very unsuccessful manner because the director refuses to give any clue to the audience as to what is going on.

I haven't seen either of those two, but they both look awesome. Thanks for the recommendation.

Naked Lunch was tedious and the title is very misleading.

Me too. I will probably give the movie a shot some day. There are movies (David Lynch is a good example) where I enjoy the sheer daring of the director. Not that I love the movie or that I'd even recommend it. But I respect filmmakers that make unconventional choices.

Hmmm... I honestly can't recommend that anyone watch the second one. So, fair warning: only for the very strong of mind/stomach.

wow. that movie's terrible. However, you should get the first TCM - probably my favorite horror movie (at least in the top 3), and is a classic for the genre.

Haven't done much movie-watching over the past couple of months, and what I have watched I didn't post about because I was catching up to stuff that had been reviewed many times--The Bank Job, for instance, which I liked very much despite the fact that it was neither depressing nor in a foreign language. Watched Anvil! The Story of Anvil on a plane a week ago, and while it was enjoyable, it was also too forced and set-up to rate more than a 3/5.

Only one worth reviewing in full:

Cherry Blossoms: Please someone else watch this so that I can get another person's thoughts on it. It was high on my list for the Chicago International Film Festival last year, but I ended up missing it. Hard to describe without spoilers (and DON'T read any reviews because I see that most have spoilers, too), but it's the story of an older couple who visit their children in Germany and Japan. I don't know what to think of it. In some ways, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. The cinematography and directing are unbelievable--not just the beauty of some of the scenes, but the composition and just the idea of what was filmed--and the acting of the two people playing the couple was astonishing. There were points that were absolutely wrenching.

On the other hand, I don't need any more "young person from a different culture teaches older person how to live again" movies, and there was a creepy aspect to the movie involving cross-dressing in a dead person's clothes that turned me off. Also, the couple's three children were absolutely despicable, with no redeeming qualities, and it would have been better to have some balance there or at least a fuller understanding of why. Could have used a bit of editing, too. Overall, the movie frustrated me because the good aspects of it were so great that I wanted it to be better as a whole. 3.5/5

Recently saw both Avatar and The Hurt Locker. I don't think that either deserved the hype they received, but both were thoroughly entertaining.

Atom Egoyan effort really hits the mark. One of the top three movies I've seen this year. Talky drama with provocative situations, stellar acting and insightful, no-gimmick direction. I highly recommend this, but remember its a complicated story about family, loss, racism and social networking. No one get shot and there are no car chases.
