Adventureland Low expectations helped make this an enjoyable flick. I thought it would be more of a broad comedy but it was actually a thoughtful dramatic comedy. The lead was a kinda Michael Cera like role but Jesse Eisenberg played it different than Cera would have, although I'm not sure if that's a good thing. He seemed too confident and not as shy and nerdy as the role suggests. I was 23 the year this movie is set (1987) and I'm not sure if they captured the time that well. I felt like it could have been '97 or 2007, outside of the great soundtrack that is. My wife says they didn't get the girls hair right for the mid-80's...not big enough. I love being taken back in time for movies set in the 80's but this didn't do it for me. Still worth a watch...3/5

I enjoyed this too. It was marketed like Superbad because if it was marketed as what it actually was, it didn't have a chance. Probably didn't have much of a chance either way. But it was well done all around. Your point about Jesse Eisenberg's character is interesting, but I look at it the other way. In most movies, the "nerdy" guy who lacks confidence is usually a charismatic, good-or-at-least-decent looking guy. The audience is just supposed to play along with the fact that he's a nerd. It's harder to root for actors who look and act real-world nerdy like Napolean Dynamite so you don't see it very often. Anyway, with this guy, he's not a bad looking guy, he's not socially inept, he was simply supposed to be uncertain and inexperienced. And I thought the movie captured it well--he was just a normal kid, not special or strange in any over-the-top way. Would a guy like that have no shot with a girl like that in real life? Of course he would. Why not? So one of the things that made the movie enjoyable to me was that I believed what I was watching.

I get what your saying and can agree. I guess it comes more from my view of the stereotypical nerd role where the guy somehow falls into a relationship. Eisenberg seemed too confident to be an outsider. He gets both girls with ease and seemed to have too much game to be a virgin heading into his college years. A minor point as I thought he was good but just needed to show a little more vulnerability.

Last night I watched I Love You, Man.

I was entertained. I got a little overboard with trying to show the parallels with meeting somebody you are interested in romatically, but overall I laughed harder and more often than I did watching other comedies recently like Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, etc..

Solid comedy. Not great, but Rudd's always good in these kinds of movies.

Finally saw Frost/Nixon. Excellent movie. Frank Langella or Mickey Rourke should have won the Oscar. I liked Milk, but Sean Penn getting the award was clearly a case of the Academy's penchant for giving Oscars if you play someone gay, ######ed or otherwise disadvantaged.

Love this movie.

Kids movies are mostly horrible. This is why PIXAR is so good in comparison.

I saw this last week and my only complaint was how Eisenberg's character is still a virgin after 4 years of college, but now all of a sudden can get the 2 hottest girls in the park. I dont think he was quite as nerdy as you make him out to be, but more unlucky with women, so while that still seems out of line, its not completely implausible either. While its easy to draw comparisons between Cera and Eisenberg, Cera is usually comes off as more anxious and neurotic while Eisenberg usually plays more introverted and thoughtful characters, and with that in mind, I think Eisenberg pulled off this role much better than Cera would have. I thought he showed plenty of vulnerability, which ironically seemed to grow alongside his confidence. He never appeared to confident to me, big reason being he asked Ryan Reynolds character for advice time after time.I was 3 in 1987, so I dont have the firsthand experience, but the atmosphere the movie presented felt accurate to me, if not more accurate for a few years earlier. Certainly didnt feel like 97 or 07.

Layer Cake - Due to the extremely high recommendations on this board I decided to bump this to the top of my list and I came away disappointed. This isn't to suggest I think Layer Cake is a bad movie, quite the contrary, it's just that (as with Kick ###) Vaughn doesn't seem to quite put the dagger in your heart. It gets too fancy at points. Especially in the disappearance and reemergence of Morty without explanation. I don't like comparing movies too much but you can't help but contrast it to the works of Guy Ritchie and Joe Carnahan. I would put this movie on even par with RockNRolla, which unlike a lot of people, I enjoyed immensely despite its flaws. 7/10. Wouldn't even graze my top of the last decade but an enjoyable watch none the less.

Stark Raving Mad - Bank robbery movie with Stiffler commissioned by the head of chinatown (Lou Diamond Phillips??) to steal a statue from a bank vault. It's got enough to be watchable, but it's so light you never really feel any of the tension necessary to make this a good movie.

Watched Training Day again... which was good... then coincidentally plugged in another movie I knew nothing about going into other than it was also about cops... Brooklyn's Finest. I wonder if my subconscious was aware that it's another Fuqua film with Ethan Hawke? Basically Training Day 2. And like any sequel, nowhere near as good as the original.

I was thinking something similar, no way could I get through those without a heavy dose of the 16x speed.

One thing I love about my Playstation 3 is you can fast-forward at 1.5x speed, and it plays the audio while you watch. So when a friend recommends a piece of garbage like Irreversable, I can watch the movie in its entirety much faster and still have an informed opinion about the movie.

Well, In our opinion any ways.. Wife and I rented it over the weekend and both enjoyed it. We weren't trying to figure out the ending while we watched it.

In hind sight all the signs were there for the ending, but we enjoyed throughout. 3.5 out of 5 for us.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that list is the reason every RedBox in the world should be destroyed. If you are reading this and you use RedBox, stop. Get NetFlix, it's 8.95 a month. You watch movies online and get one in the mail which if you watch and send back right away is a movie every three days on top of unlimited online. You are offered suggestions based on what you like. I don't know why you would choose a machine with a crappy selection for $1 per day rentals and the chance that someone has stolen the disc.

I agree. Netflix has an awesome selection. But even if you only care about mainstream movies, just the unlimited streaming movies on-line makes it the best deal in the business.

Can't get enough Walter Hill lately. Just a cool action flick that goes at a breakneck pace. None of the characters have names. Bruce Dern is great as the sleazy cop. Seemed to be inspired by El Samurai.

I just randomly saw it on the IFC PPV (didn't even know this existed). Murphy is good. The whole cast is good, actually.

War Games 2 - Yes, there was a War Games 2. Outside of the 5 minutes they steal from "Enemy of the State" it's a complete waste of time. The plot involves yet another super computer that must be shown that nuclear war is a game that can't be won. Yeah, they dipped into not only that well, but bring back Professor Faulken and Joshua (and WOPR with him) too. There is some unintentional comedy, like the government targeting potential terrorists by finding out who's good at "killer" video games.

Wishmaster 4 - Standard Wishmaster fluff, but I miss Davoff as the Djinn. Nothing special here unless you're a completist for the Wishmaster series. It had a potentially intriguing 3rd wish, but didn't go far enough with it.

Stark Raving Mad - Bank robbery movie with Stiffler commissioned by the head of chinatown (Lou Diamond Phillips??) to steal a statue from a bank vault. It's got enough to be watchable, but it's so light you never really feel any of the tension necessary to make this a good movie.

Not a very good movie watching Sunday.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that list is the reason every RedBox in the world should be destroyed. If you are reading this and you use RedBox, stop. Get NetFlix, it's 8.95 a month. You watch movies online and get one in the mail which if you watch and send back right away is a movie every three days on top of unlimited online. You are offered suggestions based on what you like. I don't know why you would choose a machine with a crappy selection for $1 per day rentals and the chance that someone has stolen the disc.

I watched these movies via online streaming. Did a google search for Direct to Video movies, since they typically have the best streaming quality.When it's free, you give into the temptation of watching Stiffler as a bank robber.

Seems interesting enough.And I was thinking too fast for my typing to keep up but the Leningrad Cowboys is a Finnish movie and the band in the movie is supposed to be from the middle of Siberia not Finland like I said above.

Oh and keep your eyes open for the Jim Jarmusch cameo.
