Have recently seen:

Capturing the Friedmans- watched this doc based on an earlier recommendation in this thread. Not my favorite, but it was certainly an intriguing story.

The Lovely Bones- this was okay for me, but nothing special.

The Box- I usually love a mind teaser, but I found this pretty slow developing and I was not really interested in the explanation

Sea of Love- always enjoy Pacino and this was no exception. Again, nothing great, but it kept my interest.

Not a rental, but we saw Knight and Day last weekend too. We had a babysitter and just wanted to get out, and ended up at this. I had VERY low expectations, as Tom Cruise action movies are not really my favorite, but I actually really enjoyed it and had fun. Cruise and Diaz were pretty good together and there were some really funny lines/scenes.

Despite not really thinking much of him as an actor, he has a ton of movies that I liked

I need to stay away from this thread. I'm seeing Airbender Friday, and every negative post I read makes me less willing to go.

At least the kids of this generation are getting their "Episode One" out of the way early.

Heathers - hadn't seen it in 20 years...just tuned in on cable to watch a little, and sat thru the whole thing. Not your run-of-the-mill teen flick. Dark, cool, and moves quickly. Slater should have made his career playing psycopaths.

"I love my dead, gay son!"

Great movie.

For the Heathers fans I recommend checking out Pretty Persuasion. Very entertaining, well acted movie.

went to add this to my queue and after reading the synopsis i'm about 95% sure i already seen it. it was OK, nowehere near as good as Heathers

It is difficult for me to say that PP is as good as Heathers but not because anything to do with either film. I watched Heathers right at the time that I was in the age group the film was targeted to, it resonated with me at that age. So my feelings towards it are more related to the frame of mind I was in at that time than really having anything to do with the movie quality.I think PP is a very interesting movie, that is very well acted and written. I think Evan Rachel Wood gives an excellent performance and I found the writing and acting in the scenes revolving around the letter she wrote during detention to be deliciously clever.

I liken it to Heathers because they both have similar social commentary regarding angst ridden teens and the lengths society will go through to both understand and appease them.

While I don't want to make this a PP v Heathers debate I must say that James Woods in his limited screen time in PP is freaking hysterical. Funnier than anything to come out of Heathers (even funnier than "I love my dead gay son!").

I think the only doc that I can remember not liking is Fahrenhype 9/11. Instead of just laying down a counter argument, it was just "Michael Moore is stupid and paranoid" for about 90mins. No info, no perspective, and no entertainment value.

I like #### disturbers. So I like that Michael Moore does what he does. But this movie has big problems. I think if you had zero narration, this movie is a pretty damning narrative on its own. But interject Moore's constant editorializing, and it's easy to dismiss factual events as slander.

I can't quite figure if this girl is the worst actress ever or if her performance was akin to Peter Sellers in "Being There".

She's certainly not an actor. That's for sure. Although, knowing what we know about that character, I think Soderbergh picked her for specific reasons. Remember that the "critic" in the film really eviscerates her for being uneducated and without any of the redeeming qualities a high priced call girl needs.

In the last month or so it seems that every Jeff Bridges movie has been on one of the movie channels.

"Last Picture Show", "Starman", "Fisher King", "Fearless"..............I've alighted on each of them with the remote.

Against All Odds

I hadn't seen this flick in twenty years.

Well written, well plotted and very well acted.

But the question I had about the premise twenty years ago still holds true.

James Woods is established as a big-time gambler in Los Angeles, so why would he hire some NFL player to look for his girlfriend instead of a professional?

Bridges has spent his entire life running pass patterns. What would he know about detective work?

The lowliest beat cop on the LAPD has more experience than Bridges. If Woods needed someone to unclog his toilet he wouldn't ask Steve Largent to work on it.

All that said, a really good movie. Rachel Ward was fantastic.

Went in with no expectations and found a pretty decent fairy tale about a nerd who lands an ultrahot girlfriend. I laughed out loud a few times and was pretty amused throughout. You could do a lot worse on a night when the wife wants to watch a movie.

The Fly

First time viewer. Well worthy of it's iconic status in the genre. The only thing that prevents it from being a 4.5 or 5.0 film is that it goes so far out of its way to be totally disgusting. Cronenburg has always chosen to show too much rather than too little and it's pretty hard to top this. As repulsive as it is, it's campy fun and a great story.

The Fly

There's been a fair amount of talk about documentaries lately, so I have a question for everybody:

Have you watched a documentary that you thought was terrible or that you hated?

One of the reasons that I like the genre is that I always get something out of every one that I have watched, no matter if I agree with the side presented in the movie or not, and can't think of any bad ones.

Great question. Most mediocre documentaries are still better than many fiction films because they still have truth in them - and that can be interesting. Documentaries that I either couldn't finish or won't recommend:Grey Gardens

People love this movie, but I was bored stiff. And furthermore, here you have two nutty women that are so weird and dull that I can't help but conclude that this movie wouldn't receive any attention if the women weren't related to the Kennedys.

The Devil and Daniel Johnson

Documentary about a weird, mentally ill guy that's been heralded as a great folk icon by some very respected musicians. His lyrics were interesting. And yet, I didn't think his music was very good and the guy is pretty much crazy. Worth 30 minutes, maybe; but not 90 minutes.

Shane McGowan: If I Should Fall From Grace

I love The Pogues. Big fan. But 90 minutes of this toothless drunk became unbearable.

Wow. I loved the first two, especially Daniel Johnston. Haven't seen the last one.

Also, March of the Penguins was way overhyped and I almost couldn't get through Grizzly Man (but that's mostly because I wanted to crawl through the screen and punch that guy in the throat - damn was he annoying).

I've managed to avoid all the others people have listed.

Actually I was very disappointed in March of the Penguins, too.

I think I am going to discontinue my romp through the 80s horror movies. There's a few cool scenes and zombies, but mostly I was just wondering WTF I was thinking back in HS when all I watched was this crap.

I subject myself to nostalgia movies every now and then and usually I find myself wondering the exact same thing.I recently rewatched the 80's space vampire romp Lifeforce. I didn't remember much about it but when I saw "Menahem Golan & Yoran Globus" in the opening credits I knew exactly what to expect. Pretty much a terrible film (although it did have potential) but with this one I know exactly why I enjoyed it back in 1985 (GB Mathilda May).

I sometimes ponder the etiology of my movie choices and what drives me to sometimes watch something that I am fully aware will be crap. For example, I was reminded of Lifeforce when reading the discussion here about good vampire movies. I had no interest in or intention of watching Lifeforce again (hadn't seen it since the mid 80s) but when I went to IMDB I saw that Patrick Stewart was in it, a fact I had forgotten, and as a huge fan of his I decided "What the hell?" and gave it another shot. It was funny to see PS in the movie but ultimately it was just garbage (even with the frequently seen, and quite spectacular boobs of Mathilda May). Still if I see a favorite actor in an obscure role I will often give the film a shot because of that person.

Then there are other circumstances like happened to me last night while watching Little Children, an absolutely fantastic film that I recommend without hesitation. I often check IMDB pages of movies I am watching or plan to watch and I did the same with Little Children. For some reason the actor Raymond J Barry's name caught my eye, not sure why, I thought I was familiar with the guy (turns out I wasn't) but was not sure from where so I checked his film history and come across this and for some reason, even though I am fully aware this will be a horrible film with little to no redeeming qualities, I want to see it. What the hell is wrong with me? Why do I sometimes make these crappy movie choices?

Please talk me off the ledge.

Little Children was excellent.

Indeed. In fact that may be an understatement. I think my dislike of Titanic sometimes makes me forget how brilliant an actress Kate Wislet truly is.I have never given this much thought but I cannot think of another movie where the use of a narrator contributed so much to the quality of the film. The narrator really filled in the time lapses and established the depth, motivation and understanding of the characters (and the use of it in the football scene was brilliant). Stranger Than Fiction comes to mind but I didn't leave that film thinking about the narrator contributed to the story.I did not realize that this was the movie that relaunched Kelly Leak's career. He truly nailed the 'sex offender' role in Little Children and I am happy that he has had a late career resurgence. Breaking Away and the original BNB are two of my all time favorite movies from my youth (they both survive the test of time well too IMO) and I always liked JEH because of that.

I did not realize that this was the movie that relaunched Kelly Leak's career. He truly nailed the 'sex offender' role in Little Children and I am happy that he has had a late career resurgence. Breaking Away and the original BNB are two of my all time favorite movies from my youth (they both survive the test of time well too IMO) and I always liked JEH because of that.

I saw this for the first time a few months ago, great film, and it finished thinking the guy had one of the best performances Ive seen in awhile. Turned out he did get nominated for best supporting actor that year, and deservedly so. Outside of Christoph Waltz, maybe the best recent supporting performances I can think of.I know i'll check out the recent Nightmare of Elm Street retread just because he plays Freddy

People seem to hate narrations in movies. I only hate the bad ones. This narration was perfect.

I think my dislike of Titanic sometimes makes me forget how brilliant an actress Kate Wislet truly is.I have never given this much thought but I cannot think of another movie where the use of a narrator contributed so much to the quality of the film. The narrator really filled in the time lapses and established the depth, motivation and understanding of the characters (and the use of it in the football scene was brilliant). Stranger Than Fiction comes to mind but I didn't leave that film thinking about the narrator contributed to the story.

I did not realize that this was the movie that relaunched Kelly Leak's career. He truly nailed the 'sex offender' role in Little Children and I am happy that he has had a late career resurgence. Breaking Away and the original BNB are two of my all time favorite movies from my youth (they both survive the test of time well too IMO) and I always liked JEH because of that.

People seem to hate narrations in movies. I only hate the bad ones. This narration was perfect.

I usually do, but done right and it can add to the film. Too many times I feel it's lazy filmmaking and they are just stating something obvious.

The Last Airbender

The Onion AV Club gave this movie an F, so you can imagine that my expectations were low. It was far worse than I could have feared.

Worst acting and writing I've ever seen in a movie - and I pride myself on the number of ####ty B movies I've watched. The Last Airbender is a joke, although it only offers a handful of laughs derived from this catastrophic failure of a screenplay. When I turned off The Lady in the Water 45 minutes in, in appeared that M. Night Shyamalan was losing any talent he once had. But seeing Airbender, I think Shyamalan is on heroin.

Airbender isn't just bad. It's bad in a way normally reserved for The Plague or syphilis. The Last Airbender and everyone who made it are a ####.

I'm friends with a young man that was psyched to see it.

You should check out The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Those are two of Winslet's best IMO. The subject matter of Revolutionary Road was a bit disturbing to me but you should be ok with it if you handled Little Children with ease.

Coen's use narration a lot. PT Anderson has also used it on occasion. If those guys have no problem with it neither do I. I'll tell you what I do hate though: movies that have still pictures at the end and what happens to the characters later on.

She's great in both, though I prefer The Reader. She's also excellent in Finding Neverland.

I recently saw Finding Neverland for the first time. Wonderful story and beautifully depicted.
