I'm going to brace myself for an onslaught as I type this:
Don Cheadle is a very average actor.
Cheadle has appeared in several good movies, so there's always something to enjoy when he's onscreen. But he doesn't have much range, he isn't charismatic, and I've never seen him in a role that lived up to all the hype.
While I would say Cheadle's rep has benefitted from being in a plethora or good or better movies with rarely a miss, I think he's an above average actor. Its hard to say on his range as a lot of roles have been similar, but I think he is charismatic and that is why he is considered as good of an actor as he is. He's rarely been the lead actor in a movie, and I think that is something that has kept him in so many good movies, but not necessarily wowed some people.
Hotel Rwanda is clearly a strong performance, but if you want my recommendations on 2 of Cheadle's movies to be impressed by him, its Talk To Me and Devil In A Blue Dress.
One thing I will say that demonstrates Cheadle being better than average, is that not only is he in good movies, be his performance also makes those movies better. Examples of this being Rosewood, Out of Sight, The Rat Pack, Traffic, Things Behind the Sun, Manic, United States of Leland, Assassination of Richard Nixon,
crash, Reign Over Me.
