I really enjoyed Funny People and found it to be pretty much hysterical. Interesting story, well developed characters and I like the fact that the comedy was primarily kept within the stand up venues or when they were working on new material and it wasn't used to distract from the dialogue within what I thought was a decently crafted drama. It is because of movies like FP and Punch Drunk Love, as well as his truly zany comedies like Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy, that I am willing to forgive so much of the mindless drivel that Sandler makes.
I love Eric Bana's description of rugby from Funny People:
It doesn't matter whether you're a
small ####er or a big ####er, you
can play this game. Because the
small ####ers barrel in and they
can get the ball up in the foul
line and then watch, the little
####ers, there they go. The big
####ers smack them. Little ####er.
Little ####er. Off to a big ####er,
and there he goes down to another
big ####er. I hate that big ####er.
