Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans

I was a bit into the movie at the beginning as the setting is set during Hurrican Katrina. With Nicholas Cage and Val Kilmer in the movie, I thought it would be at least entertaining. However, the movie just makes a bee-line south and should be retitled - Bad...the performances for the most part are subpar...honestly disappointed this was not better.

A thriller that takes a little time to set up its characters at the start. There's a 15-minute sequence where you get a feel for the Jamie Foxx character and understand something about him. It also establishes a relationship which is crucial to the closing sequence. Tom Cruise plays a more serious role than usual and spends less time smiling at himself. Overall, it's an intelligent and satisfying experience for an movie in this genre. There are a couple of moments which stretch credibility, but it all works pretty well.

I've only seen it once, but it was pretty good.

I watched the first disc of Season 1 of The Larry Sanders Show last night.I had never seen an episode because I don't care for Gary Shandling, but this was a great show.I didn't think Jeffrey Tambor could top his Arrested Development characters, but he absolutely kills it as Hank Kingsley. Looking forward to watching the rest of the season over the weekend hopefully. Rip Torn is also at his highest level. This was a late night version of 30 Rock, too bad the video quality is pretty poor. Highly recommended.

love the snob comments. I've watched more trashy, disgusting B movies than most people. There are tons of great foreign and classic films I haven't seen. I'm no snob, I just watch a lot of movies.

I watched Red Cliff the other day. Only saw Part 1 which was about 2.5 hours long, and I have Part 2 arriving from Netflix tomorrow. Now that's a movie.

I really enjoyed this film. Five hours was not a problem for me and I would gladly watch it again.

It went by very quickly. I really enjoyed the role played by Takeshi Kaneshiro (as Zhuge Liang). And Tony Leung is always good.

Kaneshiro and Leung were both excellent.I found the strategy discussions to be fascinating, particularly how they switched between the two opposing armies for the point and counter point so you could understand where the strategic mistakes were made before the battles were even fought. I was also blown away when they showed the implementation of The Tortoise strategy.

I also really enjoyed how they held onto the concepts from Romance of the Three Kingdoms when it came to the dynastic heroes and how the presence of one hero general was enough to sway the tide of a battle. Guan Yu was always my favorite and he delivered.

I will definitely watch this one again and after seeing the 5 hour version I cannot imagine how much must have been sacrificed to condense it into a 2.5 hour theatrical release. For anyone who wants to see it I strongly encourage you to seek out the uncut version.

Even if I don't agree with everything, it's invaluable finding a place where people seem to have the same love for movies that you do and aren't complete tools like 90% of the internet/blogs/and threads are.

Michael Mann movies are generally great, IMO. Miami Vice wasn't, but I still liked it.The action sequence in the Asian dance club in Collateral was top-notch.

I really enjoyed Funny People and found it to be pretty much hysterical. Interesting story, well developed characters and I like the fact that the comedy was primarily kept within the stand up venues or when they were working on new material and it wasn't used to distract from the dialogue within what I thought was a decently crafted drama. It is because of movies like FP and Punch Drunk Love, as well as his truly zany comedies like Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy, that I am willing to forgive so much of the mindless drivel that Sandler makes.

I prefer Peter Boyle to Benecio del Toro too. WTBR was just a better all around film IMO.

Really liked this movie. IMO Mann's last great movie since Public Enemies was average at best and quite disappointing. Cruise and Foxx were great in this. Really like the cinematography and lighting. I dont think I put it in my Top 20 of the decade in that thread, but it was an honorable mention

I've only seen it once, but it was pretty good.

Another great Michael Mann film. Foxx and Cruise are both outstanding and every member of the cast does great work - especially Mark Ruffalo.

It's a good point about Sandler's character. I thought most of the other stand up bits were very funny and the interplay between Sandler/Rogan Rogan/Hill/Aziz was often very funny too, particularly when they were writing jokes. And who didn't love the cute cuddly cats video? But FP really isn't a comedy at heart.I was surprised that Bana was such a scene stealer.

It seemed like a new character for him too...I havent' seen some of his more serious movies, but I don't recall him playing the arrogant, cold superstar.Bana was good in his part too.

I like Sandler as an actor. Just that "funny voices" never make me laugh.

I thought the fact that they mocked the cheesy movies Sandler's character made in FP was a nod to fans who agree with you.

"It's Complicated" - Very entertaining in a "Something's Got to Give" or "as good as it gets" kind of way. Older folks love story but some funny moments. (Wife was in town to watch this one) 3.5 out of 5 if you have a lady friend. a little less if you're a dude watching it by yourself.

A very good movie that made me incredibly sad, since I am currently going through an unwanted divorce.
