Wife and I watched She's Out Of My League last night. Mostly skits stitched together to make a movie, but I laughed a lot. A bit needlessly raunchy, but not outrageously so by the standards of recent comedies. Whoever wrote this movie has seen a lot of romantic comedies and cracked on them like the MST3K gang.

My air travel has decreased a lot over the past five years, but I had no trouble believing the average intelligence level of TSA employees matches what was on display on screen during this movie.

If you liked the movie, stick around for a dating show DVD extra, a largely improvised segment with two of the chorus characters in character.
Saw this recently. Funny at times, but overall not great. The main character seemed to laying on the awkwardness too much. The main character's best friend was hilarious though, I've never seen him before but hopefully he gets some more comedy roles in the future. The chubby/very religious friend was also pretty funny. Maybe it's because I NEVER watch romantic comedies so i didn't pick up on the jokes made about them, but any scene with just the main character and the hot chick in it didn't make me laugh at all, and there were quite a few of those scenes.

1) I enjoy horror movies, but only ones that are really well done.
Have you seen any Dario Argento movies? I wouldn't call them well done. Terrible, in some ways. But if you want to be scared (I mean really scared), I highly recommend Trauma and Deep Red.
I've seen Suspiria, and it wasn't really my thing.
Suspiria is regarded as Argento's great work. But it's one of my least favorite of his movies. Let's face it, 95% of horror movies are awful. So if you're a fan of the genre, you're often making compromises to find a good movie. If you want a movie that has a handful of scenes that will scare the #### out of you, rent Deep Red.

Before I talk about the film that I attempted to watch yesterday, let me just throw some disclaimers out there:

1) I enjoy horror movies, but only ones that are really well done. And for those of you who watch horror movies, you already know that those are few and far between. The last really good scary movie I saw in the theater was the American remake of The Ring, and I've only seen one or two horror films that I would consider "good" on DVD since then.

2) I generally don't enjoy this new "torture horror" genre, or whatever you want to call it. I enjoyed the first Saw for the most part, because I thought it was pretty original at the time, but all the sequels are crap. I also hated Hostel, and the "foreign Texas Chainsaw Massacre" that they call Frontiers.

Having said that, I recently learned of a movie called The Poughkeepsie Tapes. I saw a 10 second clip of it, of which I was instantly interested in a) the camera angle during filming, and b) the general craziness of what I was seeing. Going on that, I decided to give it a viewing.

At this point, I can honestly say that I have only seen half of it. My wife made me turn it off, as it was getting to her. I'm going to finish it at lunch today. It is definitely one of those movies that isn't for everyone. Me personally, I was enjoying a lot of the clever camerawork, and that it seemed to be a step in a different direction. A lot of people won't be able to get past the craziness that is on-screen, and that's okay. I can't really give it a rating, since I haven't finished it, but I do think it's worth a watch if you are looking for something a bit different in the horror genre. Some of the acting may come off as cheesy, as I'm sure this film was made on a non-existent budget, but I found what I saw interesting.
The premise of this movie looks like it has a lot of possibilities. I'll be interested to read you review.
Went back to it at lunch, and found out that we weren't very far from the end when she made me shut it off. There were maybe 15 minutes left. Anywho, it's one of those Positives - Negatives kinda things. First off, if anyone is thinking of watching this, consider whether or not you are in the camp that loves Blair Witch, or the camp that hates Blair Witch. I say that because the premise is similar........supposedly real tapes are found, and presented in a documentary fashion. Personally, I thought the Blair Witch Project was very cleverly done, and was a step forward in the genre. The haters to this day will bemoan that the "witch wasn't really scary, and the movie was stupid". If you feel that way about Blair Witch, then don't even bother with this one.Overall, I would say that this is a movie that shows promise, and is visually interesting. I found it funny when the killer first starts killing, that I found myself thinking about the camera angle of what was being shown. Right after that, a policeman whose job it was to view the tapes starts talking about how difficult it would have been for the killer to do what he did, all the while holding the camera at a near impossible angle. It was kinda funny.

Is it scary? No. I will be able to be alone at home quite alright. Is it creepy? Definitely. There's not an overabundance of gore either, which was refreshing. I always find things are scarier when they are left to the imagination, and the filmmakers seemed to realize that. What they did show however, was way out of left field sometimes, and that definitely amped up the creep factor. I would recommend this movie, but only to those who can take seeing things of that nature, and to those who will enjoy the camerawork and fresh approach. There is some crazy stuff displayed, though. Just sayin.

The Losers

A toned down version of an action movie you've seen a thousand times before. For a comic book adaptation, these characters didn't really have a lot of personality, sans Chris Evans who always looks like he is at least having fun. Idris Alba continues to be criminally underused in Hollywood. Jason Patrick is pretty good hamming it up big time. Nothing new at all here, but nothing too appalling either.

2.5/5
My thoughts were largely the same, although I thought all of the main actors did a pretty good job with what was some pretty derivative material. It wasn't exactly good, but I found it to be a fair amount of fun. 3/5
I enjoyed it. The director seemed to be very aware of what type of movie he was making and didn't try to push it beyond what it was. I like it when movies are honest about what they are.Good action, some funny moments what can I say it worked for me.

Repo Men

Jude Law, apparently the most futuristic looking person on the planet because Sci-Fi seems to be his thing. Extremely dark comedy and enough material to keep you thinking. Refreshing for the genre, but it's going to startle a lot of casual viewers. It is extremely violent and sadistic and a lot of fun if you can stomach it.

3.5/5
I think Repo Men will be a cult classic. Loved what he did with the typewriter
It reminded me of the first time I seen Starship Troopers, it took me a while to even know what to think.
What? It took me like 15 minutes to know Starship Troopers would be a classic.C'MON YOU APES, YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER?!!?!?!??!

Starship Troopers works very well when you watch it as it was intended to be: a parody of war films.

It works less well if you watch it as a documentary

Angel Heart - This one stuck with me for awhile. I really like supernatural noir type movies and this fit the bill. Mickey Rourke and De Niro were great as per usual. Lisa Bonet was absolutely gorgeous (also as per usual). Even though I sort of knew the 'twist' I enjoyed.

Dinner for Schmucks - Blah. Can Rudd and Carrell go back to the hard R please.

The Visitor - Richard Jenkins was good but he has done much better and this seemed a bit of a charity nod as the Academy tends to do. I enjoyed it but I didn't feel it was special.

Kicking and Screaming - Absolutely loved it. Anyone who has been through four/five years at college and has deep ties to the people they went to college with should see this movie. It made me very nostalgic and made me thought about the people I miss and the great times we all had. I think everyone does kick and scream there way into real life.

My Left Foot - I didn't care for it. DDL was good but he's done a lot better. The quick story in between with the nurse didn't really have me interested. Something about this movie had me put off right from the get go. I just wasn't all that entertained by it.

Book of Eli - sucked. really sucked up until the twist ending, but even that couldn't save it. I didn't think it was possible for a movie with Oldman and Denzel to be this bad.

Where the Wild Things Are:

Visually, it was a treat. As a movie, I didn't like it at all. Can't expect a ton out of a movie that was based on a fairly short kids book. Just seemed to go nowhere, and my impression was it just had an overall angry/dark feel to it. Went in thinking I was going to dig this movie a lot too.

I understand the way you feel. I was torn while watching it because I really wanted to like it and I didn't want that feeling to jade my feelings about it. By the end I realized that I enjoy the characters and the way that the Wild Things represented different aspects of Max's personality and the situation with his family (or seemed to in my eyes) at the very least the world of the Wild Things seemed to capture the volatility of such a young mind. I did not mind that it wasn't really a family friendly film and I also enjoyed the music.Overall I am a fan of the film but I can completely see how it would not resonate with others.

I loved the bookend scenes at the beginning and the end. While the long, meaty section in the middle was weird and uncomfortable, I think this movie is a great work of art.

Might feel differently if I watched it again sometime. The beginning 10mins were quite jolting/angry and I think that threw me a little. Then it switched gears when he got to where the wild things are, and I thought it completely dragged for about an hour and then I started to gain a little interest again towards the end. The bolded was my take as well, but for me it was too little too late after sitting through the first 60-80mins.

ETA: agree with jdogg that the first and last 10mins were the best part.

Man Bites Dog:

This is a movie that combines society's fascination with celebrity with our love of all things 'reality' in a sardonic and sickly captivating way.

The basic premise has a documentary film crew being allowed to follow around a serial killer as he perpetuates his craft while the crew itself slowly crosses the line from presenting facts to becoming a part of the story. All the while the killer spews his philosophical views on life, architecture, art, other races and cultures and how to properly dispose of the evidence of his trade.

Although this film is labeled a dark comedy it is really a film that will stick with you for a while after viewing. It's not so much that it will make you feel like you need to take a bath as it is one that will make you shake your head and ask WTF as you sit up in the middle of the night re-living some of Benoit's exploits. It's sort of a Clockwork Orange for a more modern age I would say.

20 years+ late to the party but a couple of the bits made me laugh. Hits just a bit more than it misses, which is pretty decent for a spoof. Val Kilmer is especially feminine looking.

I think my favorite part was when he mistakenly thought it was him they were asking to sing at that fancy restaurant. The backwards scene was good stuff as well.

Monsters vs. Aliens 3/5

This is the second viewing for me and I didn't like it as much as the first one. It's probably because I watched all of the Hayao Miyazaki films in the interim. I find that Miyazaki and Pixar films have heart. I care about the characters and the stories seem fully developed. This feels like a long cartoon that would be aired on a Saturday morning.

It's full of cliche villains, explosions, screaming and running around. There's never a sense of danger because it never really engages the viewer and makes it seem real. Everything is rushed and there's no time to watch a character thinking through a problem or reacting emotionally to something.

Dreamworks obviously didn't take the time to observe human behavior and adapt it for this story. Pixar and Studio Ghibli are perfectly capable of making me cry, but this doesn't come close.

It's better than average for a Dreamworks title, but it's all pretty shallow in the end.

Love this movie. I didnt see the twist coming at all, but I guess I should have because his progress in finding Harry Angel was basically going nowhere. I could probably add voodoo or hoodoo movies to the list of subgenres Im a sucker for. I remember watching the Skeleton Key expecting an average movie at best because Kate Hudson was the lead, but I really liked that and think it was a solid movie regardless (good performances by Peter Sarsgaard, Gena Rowlands, and John Hurt helped make up for Hudson as well). So when you say you like supernatural noir like Angel Heart, any other movies similar to this ilk that you could recommend?

V For Vendetta

This movie is a lot cornier and melodramatic than I remember. Almost cheesy. But what can I say? It's an entertaining movie.

The worst thing was Natalie Portman. Natalie is smart, kind, and pretty. But she is not a very good actor. I loved her in The Professional, but I haven't seen a ton of her work as an adult. She was bad in Star Wars: Episode I, although every actor under the direction of George Lucas has almost no shot at a decent performance. Portman was awful in Vendetta.

I really want to like portman as an adult actor but my patience is running out. she came off as a natural in films like "the professional", "beautiful girls" and "anywhere but here" but she's been on a downward spiral pretty much since then. we all want to like her - she's cute, adorable and seems really nice - but she's been trading on that for some time now. it's wearing a little thin and she's in danger of becoming another julia roberts without the blockbuster bankability. she needs to find director to get her in the right role fast.

Would have been serviceable if the main villain wasn't such a caricature and had been muted down a bit.Made it farcical, IMO.
I enjoy the performance, if for nothing else, that it's the same actor who plays the main character in 1984. The character he plays in V for Vendetta, is basically Big Brother. That "aha" moment that came to me while watching it one day.

While I enjoyed this movie the only time I saw it, V for Vendetta seems like 1 of the most overrated movies of the last 5 years to me. Another one is Children of Men.I watched Beautiful Girls last night for the first time and forgot to write a review on it yet (very good, although my expectations may have tempered how good I thought it was. Great ensemble cast, great soundtrack. Nothing that really made me love it like I expected since its so highly regarded. Still really enjoyed it though - 7.8/10), and as an aside to the review I was going to mention Natalie Portman. She showed such promise when she was young in this, The Professional, and to a lesser degree Heat - all good performances regardless of age, but her acting never really kept improving, and if anything, has probably regressed. She was alright in Garden State and Closer, but based on those 3 performances when she was around 14 years old, I just wouldve expected more at this point. Garden State is really the only role that comes close to the uniqueness and charisma she had in those early roles.

That's so funny you say that. Our TV was on SyFy Sunday, because Sunshine (good movie, despite the off the rails third act) was on. When it went off, Children of Men came on. I was trying to get a movie that I wanted to watch in the Blu-Ray player before it started, but the wife said she had never seen it, and got into it. I said "One of the most overrated movies to come out in the last few years. It has a couple of scenes with interesting camera work, and that's about it." An hour in, she said "I don't want to watch this anymore." Maybe she'll listen to me more.

Actually, much as I'm not a Julia Roberts fan, even early Roberts roles were a lot better than what Portman's doing right now.

While I enjoyed this movie the only time I saw it, V for Vendetta seems like 1 of the most overrated movies of the last 5 years to me. Another one is Children of Men.
V For Vendetta doesn't have a lot of defenders, so I'm not sure it's overrated. I am not a fan of Children of Men. I wanted to murder Michael Caine every time he said "Amigo" and was glad when he got killed.
