I havent seen anything recent reviewed in here for awhile that interests me. I rejoined Netflix a couple weeks ago and all Ive been doing is watching the Instant Watch movies..Any recs on movies that have came out in the last few months? Not trying to put Roshoman or Good&Bad&Ugly in my Queueue yet
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly needs to be at the top of your queue or I might have to hunt you down and smack you in the head.
Seen it, was just being a smartass because I literally cant think of anything to put in my list that has come out recently. I dont want to start wishing for 5 and 10 year old movies I havent seen quite yet.

Cool. I just hope I can get a refund on that plane ticket.

Animal Kingdom has been getting pretty much universal appreciation around here.

Get Low has also been well received, for those of us who have seen it (I thought it was fantastic)
I actually had been wanting to see Animal Kingdown for awhile and realized today its on Instant Watch (which brings up the question: why are there so many #### movies on my WI page when I scroll thru and them I'll search random movies I want to see and find out I can actually watch them instantly?!)...the Local Favorites section is always good for a laugh  Forgot about Get Low, added.

Of the movies that I have seen, and have been released, semi-recently I liked and would recommend Dogtooth, The Illusionist, Inside Job & Jackass 3D. I also found Shinjuku Incident to be interesting and entertaining and is worth it if you want to see Jackie Chan take on a drama.
Did I miss your review of The Illusionist? My favorite movie of 2010 and I was hoping to see others talking about it.

It's not new, but I've been pimping The Long Kiss Goodnight for months now, and that's available for instant watch.

If you like crime movies, Animal Kingdom was really good.
I'll def watch this within the next week since its instant watch on Netflix

Seen it, like it, underrated. A lot of good action flicks came out in the mid 90s though

Just finished Drive Angry.

Awesome in a "B" movie way. Captures the grindhouse feel way better than any other recent attempt, and I've enjoyed a lot of them (Black Dynamite, Machete, Death Proof) It's got Nicholas Cage acting terrible as he does best, Fitchner is firing on all cylinders like I haven't seen since the early days of Prison Break, devil worshipers, and one of the most gorgeous women I've seen in a film in a long time, Amber Heard. The over the top 3d effects and contrasts take a way maybe a bit, or may even add to the overall awesomeness. Cage hasn't turned in this kind of effort since Con Air, it felt really good to enjoy one of his action movies again. Best "B" action film since Punisher: War Zone.

4.5/5

This sounds like a must see in my book :lmao: Im honestly not sure if theres ever been a better action trilogy than Nic Cage's The Rock/Face Off/Con Air

:goodposting: I pretty much wore out my VHS tapes of all three in high school.

ETA: And by using "effort" and "Con Air" in the same sentence, you people know exactly what to expect from this.

The Mechanic

The original is one the few Bronson movies I haven't seen. Statham has gotten incredibly stale to me, but I am a big Ben Foster fan. This was a huge miss. Plot was stupid and not in a good way.

The Mechanic? As soon as I saw the title I thought of the movie where Bale is skeletor.

ETA: Which is a very good movie, so thats why it kind of caught my attention

I was entertained, although I don't think there's anything special about it.

Y'know I am not sure I gave it a write up. I wouldn't call it my favorite film of 2010 but it was perhaps the most unique and certainly worth best picture recognition in the day of ten nominees. I like that it was a charming animated film, with much of the perceived feel good fluff that one expects from animation but, in fact, it was a complex and touching drama that was more human than 99% of films made today.

SpaceCamp

Maybe you have to have been a teenager in the 1980's to get all the cultural references--I was--so that is part of the charm.

At the time, space travel was still revolutionary so the movie was "cutting edge".

I was shocked to recall that the boy in the movie was Joaquin Phoenix.

Just caught one of Peter Jackson's first movies, Meet The Feebles. HFS. It's the muppets on acid. They curse, screw around, do drugs, just about any depraved thing you can think of. Honestly it's not that good, but it's definitely weird enuogh to be somewhat entertaining.

Great description. I remember this being really funny, I was probably on acid too.

I didn't like Cedar Rapids much overall, but I agree that John C. Reilly was in peak form. Some of his lines slayed me. CLASSIC RON.

Brothers.....Expected to like it, but thought it was even better & very good. I felt this exhibited the family/home angle of war better than any other movie Ive seen (and few show that aspect). Solid story, I wish they went into more detail with Gyllenhaal's character/past and extended the movie after Maguire came back after being thought dead plus his character was totally different, but I cant complain much with that because what carries the movie is the acting. IMO, both Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal give their best performances to date (though Darko makes it tough for me to say that), which makes this a must see just based on that, but the entire supporting cast is excellent as well, especially Sam Shepard and Maguire's 2 daughters. Portman was solid, but left me wanting a little bit more. Maybe Im forgetting a role/movie, but I thought Maguire exemplified a solider with PTSD better than anyone Ive seen. Acting aside, the movie isnt much better than average, but its the acting that elevates it at least a couple notches. Hopefully Maguire and Jake G are rich enough where they can start going for better roles/movies as opposed to box office schlock.....8.2/10

Unthinkable....Pretty much a constant suspense thrill ride. Was nothing like I expected going in based on the netflix summary (which are getting shorter and worse seemingly). Samuel L. was very good, but I thought was really kept this movie entertaining and interesting was the casting of Michael Sheen as the terrorist being interrogated. Without a good actor in that role, this movie wouldnt have been near as entertaining. I liked it a lot, but ultimately the ending left a bad taste in my mouth...6.3/10

It Might Get Loud

Jack White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page talk guitars and jam a bit in this documentary. I enjoyed it.
I am know nothing about guitar, but would have liked this movie a lot more if they had somebody besides Edge in there. Didn't find it as interesting with him seemingly being more about dicking around with the effects and less about playing guitar. Still a worthy doc. to watch, though.
Interesting. I think Edge was a good inclusion for that very reason.
I am sure they did that to balance out Jack's side and him making guitars out of hollow logs and duct tape. Just didn't find him nearly as interesting as the other two. Again, don't know anything about the instrument, but found myself respecting him less since it seems like a lot of his stuff was computer/effects generated.
I can see that but I think what Edge does with the technology he uses is no less complicated than the stripped to the bones approach that White takes. Stylistically I probably prefer White but you can't argue that Edge has done some amazing work too.
Artistically he has talent, but I was just a little annoyed that a doc about playing the guitar included a guy who seemingly was playing a couple notes and tweaking it through the computer. Just felt like he was a little outclassed by the other two. Don't know many people who would list him near the top of their best guitarists list. Doesn't mean that what he does doesn't take talent or he isn't an accomplished artist.
I agree. When it comes to pure guitar playing ability I don't think anyone would have him near the top (unless you are specifically talking about rhythm guitar, where I understand he is actually quite good) but, just like JW turned a coke bottle, nail and piece of wood into the most simplistic guitar ever, Edge took the most simplistic playing and transformed it into something special with his technology. The balance between Edge and JW worked for me.

My biggest problem with it was that I thought JW came off as being quite smug about his old school approach. I can't specifically point to a moment but I interpreted his body language as being just a little disrespectful and self superior, as if, at times, he was merely tolerating the other two. I could be way off base with that but I did feel that at times.
Interesting. This wasn't my take at all. It came across more like he had a revelation when he watched these old low tech musicians. He sounded inspired to me, not smug
I agree. JW seems completely inspired and in love with the sound. To me he just seemed to hold his traditionalist style above Edge and even Page. Like I said, I could be completely off on this one, I am going exclusively on my interpretation of body language, not anything anyone said but that's how it came across to me.ETA FTR I am a huge JW fan. Love White Stripes & Raconteurs. It doesn't bother, or surprise, me that he could be a completely full of himself.
the Dead Weather blows all that #### out the water.

Honestly, May was a terrible month for releases and April wasn't that much better. I think the only ones that I could recommend with a straight face are the dramas - Rabbit Hole and Blue Valentine. I echo the recommendations for Animal Kingdom if you haven't seen that. I'll try to think of a couple more for you, but you are probably safer bumping older movies up the queue or catching up on TV shows or something.

The Tourist- Still a big fan of Angelina Jolie (thought Salt was pretty good) and I like Johnny Depp but this was a real miss for them. I wish they had just gone all Austin Powers on it because it felt like that at times except that they seem to be taking it seriously. I'll give it 2/5only because Venice is one of my favorite cities and there's lots of great scenery in the movie.

Over the weekend we hooked netflix up to the projector and watched the following on the wall: The Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played w/ Fire, and The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest. I have a 1 hour drive to work and picked up GWDT audio book from the library. I was about 3/4 through it and Mrs TRF and I decided to watch them. Subtitles. Great movies all around. Well done. Highly recommended.

4.5/5 for the group.

Looks like Hollywood is going to make Dragon Tattoo. I hope they don't mess it up.

Just finished this. Couldn't disagree more. If Cage would have put in a Con Air level performance I would have been thrilled but it really felt mailed in to me. Seen it all before. Worst part is they wasted a fairly interesting concept that could have lifted this movie out of the been there, done that category.I will agree on Amber. And really she stole the show anyway. Far more effort than anyone else and I hope we get to see more of her soon.

Lots of gratuitous nudity which is always nice but it would have to be wall to wall to save this one.

Was pretty disappointed with Hanna, I expected more. Very strange, didn't make a whole lot of sense. What little action there was, was crap. Could have used about 30 minutes less close up sad face.

The Trip

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon travel through Northern England reviewing fine restaurants and working on their voice impressions. Hilarious. This hasn't been released in theaters yet, but my British pal bought it from Amazon.uk and had it shipped here. It's going to be packaged as a film in the states, I believe. But the form I saw it in was a six part series. Highly recommended for Coogan fans.

Somehow I rejoined with a free month trial for old members but lost my queue, so that was part of the problem. Thats what it seemed like to me the last few months too, then it occurred to me, I hadnt seen almost any of the highest regarded movies from last year (Inception, TS3, True Grit, maybe 1 more and thats all Ive seen) so Im about 30 deep now and should be good for awhile...Blue Valentine being 1 of them.

Recommendations still welcomed, of course.

Saw Green Hornet.

I had moderate expectations and was hoping for a campy, entertaining action movie.

It sucked and Rogen wasn't funny - just irritating.

True Grit

Take into account my previous post about not liking Westerns. This movie did next to nothing for me. I'll agree with 1/2 of the posts in the discussion and say that I thought the girl was too much. Came across that they were trying too hard to show that she was strong, and it came off wrong for me. Winter's Bone did a much better job with it without having to turn the girl into an annoying smart-### (unless that's what they were going for). That aside, I didn't find Bridges' or Damon's characters interesting at all, and just found myself bored 2/3 the way into the movie and looking at the clock. As usual with them, the film was beautifully shot, so that gets a point up from me. Probably wouldn't sniff my top 20 of the year. 6/10

I have never been a huge Coen brother's fan, but do respect what they bring to the table. For me I'd put this in the 'OK' category for their movies. Not as good as No Country and Fargo, but not nearly as bad as Oh Brother or Burn After Reading.

Fun toy for the movie nerds: the Slate/Rotten Tomatoes "Hollywood Career-o-Matic" chart
He's never going to make anything I would a quality film, but Dennis Dugan makes incredibly watchable, brainless films. I've seen Beverly Hills Ninja, Problem Child, Happy Gilmore, Saving Silverman, Big Daddy, and even Grown-ups probably at least a dozen times each. A couple of those over 50 probably. I don't even like Grown-ups and I'll pop it in when I'm doing something away from the tv every couple weeks or so.

Saw I am number 4 yesterday. Another been there done that, but my wife liked it. To me we've seen it all before. And none of the performances were all that. Just very formulaic. If you couldn't see what was coming a mile away you haven't been to many movies.

Worst Actress: Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hewitt has the rare distinction of never having made a single "fresh" (above 60 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) film. Her average score of 18.9 owes to such duds as Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (7 percent), I Know What You Did Last Summer (35 percent), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (7 percent), and both Garfield movies (15 percent and 11 percent, respectively).

Was pretty disappointed with Hanna, I expected more. Very strange, didn't make a whole lot of sense. What little action there was, was crap. Could have used about 30 minutes less close up sad face.
Pretty similar to my take. There were a number of cool elements, but they did not add up to a very good movie.

Yes. I saw it less than two weeks ago and could not tell you a thing about it. Everything in it was an inferior re-hash of something I'd seen before. I loved the concept, hate hate hated the film.

Watched Barney's Version yesterday. It was good for what it was, another heavy duty Giamatti vehicle. It kinda went on and on, but there were some great performances and some funny parts. Should have been another Oscar nomination and maybe even a supporting actress nod for Pike or Driver.

ETA: correction since it was a 2010 movie and not nominated for jack

Too Big To Fail

Almost finished with this movie, and I am very entertained. Great cast, interesting script, and the movie seems to possess a solid understanding of the mortgage crash. Highly recommended.
A few sketchy moments in the second half due to some really poor writing. Still, big thumbs up for me.
