Drive - Despite being skeptical about it I really ended up enjoying this one. At first I thought it moved a little slow and found the way the director chose to develop the relationship between Gosling and Mulligan to be a little disjointed and awkward. But then I realized that the entire movie was made in a way to eliminate unnecessary exposition (in fact this movie is the absolute anti-exposition, there is little dialogue and almost none from Gosling). It was done in such a way that made it a clean, easy story to follow and my mind easily filled in the blanks. For example it really doesn't matter how Gosling found the dude at the strip joint because in these films the protagonist always finds their target so why waste time showing it in great detail? That was a recurring element throughout the entire film, it doesn't matter how they got their because they always get there. I also enjoyed the change of perspective during the elevator and walking up to Nino's in the mask sequences.

Gosling conveyed a lot with perhaps the fewest number of lines I have seen from a main character since Eastwood in Sergio Leone's films.

Despite the name this isn't a film about driving cars fast, although there certainly is that element, this is not a Fast Five type film (which is what I worried about and was thrilled that it was not) it's a compelling crime drama with uniquely parsimonious story telling style.

I could see it being too slow for some, particularly the 20 minutes after the opening sequence (which was incredibly well done), but this is one I would definitely recommend for most film viewers. Likely would make my 2011 top 10 list if I made one.

One question though: Why was Christina Hendricks even in the film? I like to look at her and all but she seemed pretty useless and inconsequential to the story.
We're not going to see Ryan Gosling in Fast Five type films. He's already established that he's choosy with scripts and is not concerned with making megamillions. He's about the work, which is good, because he is a good actor and has an eye for material and talent. He's going to be enjoyable to follow. As much as a love Carey Mulligan, if there was a weak link in this one, it was her. But not enough to get in the way. One of favorite movies of the year. And I also have used the word "clean" to describe it.
Yeah Gosling seems to really appreciate his craft. I need to watch a few more of his films. I have seen Remember the Titans  , The Notebook  , Lars & The Real Girl  , and Blue Valentine (he was great but  ).I want to see The United States of Leland and Half Nelson. Anything else that is absolute must see?
Blue Valentine and Lars and the Real Girl.

I've read good things about The Believer.

Yeah....of what he hasnt seen, Id say The Believer, The United States of Leland and Half Nelson are all must see. I think its worth seeing/would recommend Fracture, All Good Things, and Murder By Numbers. Only movie of his I have seen but didnt like was Stay, which almost wants to revisit it. Only movies of his I havent seen yet are Slaughter Rule, Notebook, CSLove, Ides of March, and Drive. The latter 2 I'll definitely be seeing sometime soon.United States of Leland is probably my favorite right now, although I wouldnt be surprised if Drive surpasses it for me.

BURN

Bunraku - Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Ron Perlman, Kevin McKidd. Not an A-list cast per se but one that I have enjoyed individually at many times and on many levels. I had never heard of this film but with that cast I had reasonably high expectations for an action, adventure movie.

I can see what it was trying to be, some kind of Sin Cityesque unique take on the action film. Not a film with multiple chapters but a linear plot in a unique highly stylized manner. The production values were unique with minimalist interior sets, intricate transitions, occasional comic book montages and that sort stuff. But it still felt cheap and cartoonish in a bad way. It felt at times as if the director couldn't decide between a gritty graphic novel, 70s camp television or 80s video game but the combination of all three was a bad idea.

Untimately, IMO, it failed, pretty miserably, and I understand why I had never heard of it (not sure how I stumbled across it but when I read the IMDB synopsis and saw the cast I had to give it a go). The story was weak and disjointed and occasionally made no sense why characters formed or broke alliances or why anyone was even concerned with each other let alone treating them as a mortal enemy, or blood brother. It really felt nonsensical pretty much most of the time. The fight coordination was also pretty weak (seriously, when you can see the rubber sword flopping it's just not a good thing), and the opening Kevin McKidd "bad-###ness" was a harbinger for a weak action effort overall (this was no Lucius Vorenus).

IMO not worth the time, but I think someone might find something here worth enjoying. I'm just not that guy.

I finally got around to seeing Elite Squad. I saw Elite Squad 2 last month and they told me it didn't matter which I saw first. they were mistaken. Elite Squad puts a lot of the characters and situations of Elite Squad 2 into context. 2 is quite a bit better, but the original is a necessary preamble. See both. In order.

ES 3.2

ES2 4.2/5 stars

Bridesmaids.

Put me on the side that this was vastly overratted. Did I laugh throughout? Yes. Was it a good movie? Yes. Guess I just came away more dissappointed then anything because their was a great movie in there.

Wiig's character was just very unlikable for nearly the entire movie. They just didn't develop her character enough. The last scene with her was completely uninspired.

Melissa McCarthey was amazing though.

Last scene should have been Wiig parking in front of the police car on the side of the road. She get's out with a crowbar and smashes her brake lights. Cop stares their in disbelief. She drives away hoping the cop will pull her over. Nothing is happening. She gets misty. Then what's that...his siren. Boom. Great ending.

The ending of him just showing up at the wedding was just weak writing.
3 out of 4 stars barely. I'd recommend it. Good but could have been a classic.

This is pretty much my feeling on it too. I just watched it tonight. I'd give it a 6.5 or 7/10. Are people touting this as an all-time comedy classic? It's nowhere near that level. It's funnier than I expected. Wiig's portrayal of a sad-sack is believable, but will wear you down. I like the mention of "George Glass" who was also Jan Brady's fake boyfriend.I don't really think the proposed ending is all that great (what did happen was homage to Sixteen Candles -- in fact, a lot of this movie was referencing something), but agree that it could have ended a LOT earlier. It was over 2 hours long and couldn't sustain it. Melissa McCarthy is hilarious and a scene stealer every time. That extra bit during the credits was top notch.

The Long Good Friday

A 1980 British film starring Bob Hoskins and a young Helen Mirren.

Hoskins plays the top gangster in England who is trying to get seed money from the American Mafia so he can buy the land that will hold the Olympics.

Then suddenly attacks from an unknown source begin taking out his men. The plot is Hoskins trying to solve this problem without the Mafia knowing about it.

It is a really brutally violent movie. Hoskins delivers a great performance, especially in the last scene where doesn't say a word.

Attack the Block.

Could never imagine recommending this to anyone else to watch. Actually shocked how this movie even got on anyone's radar let alone numerous year-end Top 10 lists.

You take out the accents and no one would ever have heard of this movie.

Rarely does a movie piss me off.

Saw it yesterday and thought it was average.Good idea but could have been much better - needed more humor and a different ending.

Agreed. I'm not trying to say it was terrible. As Daywalker said, it definitely isn't something that I'd recommend to anyone or even bring up in conversation.

I think that in the context of its genre, Attack the Block is a solid second level entry.

In a genre that so many people love, there are remarkably few releases as solid as this one.

Love me some Attack the Block. It's a buncha chavs fighting an alien invasion, it doesn't get more awesome than that.

Were you expecting Dangerous Liasons?

I enjoyed it for what it was. It's not something I rave about or recommend to others.

The People vs. Larry Flynt

I've had this on my top 100 favorite films list ever since I saw the movie in the late 90s, and I wanted to revisit it since I've only seen it once.

There are a few scenes that are sort of hammy and melodramatic, but overall, I still really enjoy this movie. The free speech issue is always interesting to me. But mostly, I like this movie because of Flynt's relationship with his wife. And what's poignant to me is that even though Flynt was disabled because of a shooting, in many ways, his wife was so damaged that she had her own kind of mental disabilities. So this wasn't a case of her taking pity on him. They both needed each other immensely.

No offense, gb. But isn't this statement kind of like calling yourself a weirdo?Embrace it with the rest of us man!
Nah, I just know that my tastes aren't really palatable with most. Movies like Attack the Block and District B-13 are movies that I enjoyed, but don't necessarily recommend as most wouldn't like.

Life During Wartime

I've seen a lot of Todd Solondz's movies, and I liked Welcome To The Dollhouse and Happiness. But this guy is becoming a poor imitation of himself. Solondz's shtick is to shock you - which is fine. But early on, Allison Janney delivers a line that is so inappropriate and so unrealistic, that I said, "Oh bull####" out loud. I don't mind being shocked in a movie, and some of my favorite movies are shocking. But Solondz really blew it here.

Lars and the Real Girl:

What a fantastically odd little movie. Might be Gosling's best performance, and that is saying something. Really love the message of acceptance with the people around him, but thought the movie took it a tad too far with how far the delusion was allowed to go. Would have to look at the list from that year, but would probably be up there on the list of favorites. 8/10.

Loved this movie. What struck me about Lars And The Real Girl was the town's willingness to come together to help Lars. Initially, I didn't buy it. But then some real life stories flashed in my memory. Stories of small towns that rally behind mentally challenged youths in school. In real life, people can get over their discomfort quickly when they realize that they can be supportive because it's the kind, decent thing to do. The movie is sentimental without being smarmy. Emotional without being manipulative. I was genuinely touched.

Watched Hanna with next to no expectations and I genuinely enjoyed it. loved the camera-work and direction, and really liked the fairy-tale narrative and characters. Some good action thrown in too, which helped it move along and kind of cover up the cliched story-arc of the title charcter needing to get from point A to point B filling up the movie. The fairy-tale aspect also helped me forgive a ton of plausibility holes. And I would have preferred not ultimately learning who this kid was- felt like it wasn't needed at all and a bit of mystery would have helped maintain the fairy-tale... but ambiguity doesn't seem to play well in the US.
watched this with my wife the other night. i didn't hate it but i did not enjoy myself either. the potential was there, i guess, but the combination of a crummy script and a director who was unable to resist the urge to tinker with every single shot in the movie made it impossible. it's like the director was trying to distract you with quick cuts, odd and relentless angling of the camera, and euro-techno-club music pulsing in every scene (thank you chemical bros!). i haven't seen that much running since Twykker's "Run Lola Run". he also seemed completely unable to stage a fight scene. also, eric bana just needs to stop making movies. he's done good work in two movies - "chopper" and "black hawk down" - while the rest has been crap. that said, i am thinking this would be the kind of movie that a 15 year old would adore.

We have a running list of movies for teens:

Hanna

Attack the Block

Sarah's Key

A film that really makes you embarassed to be part of the human race. The French rounded up 75,000+ Jews and deported them to German concentration camps on their own. I don't know enough about it, but I believe France paid the Nazis to exterminate them. Interesting story across 70 years trying to figure out what happened to Sarah, who was a young girl at the time the French kicked out the Jews. I generally like historical movies, so I might rate it higher than others but a solid movie all around. 3.5/4.

Troll Hunter:

I am usually a fan of the 'found footage' type of movies, but this one didn't do a lot for me. I think part of the problem was they showed too much of the trolls, and that was not a good thing. Love the idea behind it, had a little fun, but it was average. 5/10.

Hangover 2:

What a horrible piece of #### this movie was. Not only was it completely unfunny, it was just sad how little they tried to do anything remotely different for the sequel. I made it to about the 1 hour mark and had to cut bait. I am sure that I missed out on some wacky reveal where Teddy was, an appearance from Mike Tyson, and some pictures of their night, but I will try to live with myself. 2/10

It was a good idea but they needed more humor. The suddenly serious, try to turn the gangleader into a hero crap, fell pretty flat.It wasn't bad, just average and could have been very good.

This is where I was.
And really, the aliens are just some type of space dog running after a female space dog in heat? That plot line seemed pretty goofy to me.

Watched that movie Dale and Tucker vs Evil or whatever it is called. Don't see the love for this movie. At all.3/10
I watched this last night and thought it was pretty funny, but one thing left me  Where were the boobies?!?!? The movie is rated 'R', it's a "horror" movie that didn't have any problem showing gore, but there was nary a breast to be found. Naked college chicks are a staple of your decent horror movie. What the hell man?Minus some points for the lack of boobage. 5/10

Didn't bother me, bruv. Was different. I like different. Had it been "alien invasion" again for the millionth time, I think that would have been

Yea, Hangover 2 was not very good. I laughed a few times, but it was nowhere near as funny as the first. I actually felt that it didn't even use the same formula properly. It was more mean than funny and the Tyson thing was pretty lame as was where Ted was found 2 days later. The pictures revealing the night were easily the best part of the movie.

1.5/5

they'll fix everything that didn't work with the 3rd hangover film. trust me. my guess is that it will be a Galifinakis wedding this time around and the hi-larity will be 3 times as much. i'm guessing it will also feature a bride yucking it up with the "wolfpack". maybe some like mary lynn rajskub because she does weird pretty well.

And really, the aliens are just some type of space dog running after a female space dog in heat? That plot line seemed pretty goofy to me.
Interesting. I liked the simplicity of the plot in contrast to "We've come to steal your resources, brains or just because we're ######## like that." that we commonly see in alien invasion films.

Love me some Attack the Block. It's a buncha chavs fighting an alien invasion, it doesn't get more awesome than that. Were you expecting Dangerous Liasons?

Not funny? Wow I thought it was hysterical at times. Then again I think most chavs are hysterical by nature.

Watched that movie Dale and Tucker vs Evil or whatever it is called. Don't see the love for this movie. At all.

3/10
I watched this last night and thought it was pretty funny, but one thing left me  Where were the boobies?!?!? The movie is rated 'R', it's a "horror" movie that didn't have any problem showing gore, but there was nary a breast to be found. Naked college chicks are a staple of your decent horror movie. What the hell man?Minus some points for the lack of boobage. 5/10
That is always a disappointment in these types of films (e.g. Shark Night). It runs counter to expectations for these type of films (i.e. good kills and boobs). But I thought this one was so clever on pretty much every other level that I didn't really mind and am happy to recommend it.

Find it hard to swallow that director Del Toro had any involvement with this turd. This is actually the first bad thing I've had to say about the guy. Watchable I guess in a very bizarre way. The little spider monkey talking rat things just don't work on film, like at all. Add in zero meaningful character development and nobody really doing anything. I'd rather watch Shark Night 3 times in a row. Couple cheap scares and I'll give it a point for being in the "Creature Feature" genre. Reminded me of the 80's movie The Boogens with the killer Salamander, except way more stupid.

1.5/5

That's extremely disappointing.

You're telling me, man. I wanted to like this so much, it's even in my guilty pleasure genre. It just sucks. Only monsters Del Toro has created that have disappointed me. He is able to capture some feeling with the atmosphere of his shots, but his bar is set so much higher that even that wasn't enough.

also, eric bana just needs to stop making movies. he's done good work in two movies - "chopper" and "black hawk down" - while the rest has been crap.
He was great in Munich. Troy is a historical drama that seems to get a bad rap but I liked it and thought he was fine in it. His small role in Funny People was also pretty good.

What he did in Chopper was enough for a life pass. But, agree he was dreadful in Ang Lee's Hulk and I didn't "get" the Funny People bit at all.Oh, and :lmao: to the bolded.

Yeah, I expected a lot more from the director of Pan's Labyrinth.

That's no overstatement. Bana is fantastic in Munich, and that's a movie that is very underrated.

Agreed to the bolded, but I thought Bana was great in Funny People.

Hey now, I didnt say it was a "historically accurate drama"...What else would you call it and how dont you lump it in with all the other period war dramas?

Just raggin' on ya, good buddy. "Sword and Sandal" I guess is what they used to call these things.
