Well, it wasn't Godfather by any means, but I thought the action was sufficient, the acting proficient and the cinematography was simply breathtaking. Will it win an Oscar? It's not likely, but it certainly earned my two thumbs up.

Agreed. Saw it in the theaters back in 2001 and thought it was meh, watched it again in 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Vaughn was terrific and so very frustratingly annoying.

If you are not in the right move you will absolutely loathe this film. One of the most irritating performances of all time. And one that I adore.

The best baseball movie ever made. Pitt absolutely nails Beane. I actually didn't hate Jonah Hill in a movie for once. I could let the fact that he was basically a made of character bother me, but I won't. I'll still watch Major League more, but this one is going on the shelf. My favorite film of 2011 so far.

I thought the first Bourne movie was excellent.But the next one declined a bit and the third declined even more.. In the third one, when he's in the vehicle that falls off a building onto a roof in a lower building and he immediately jumps up and runs away, unbelievability had completely taken over.

It was short and I wanted to watch something before I went to sleep. I've actually liked several silent films now - "M", "Metropolis", and "Battleship Potempkin" are all worth watching.

He does. The think that I liked was the editing in that it showed the criminals and the police aren't all that far apart in method or motivation.

I remember seeing it the first time and not enjoying it because Vaughn's character was such a jerk. But the second time, the comic timing with the two protagonists really sunk in and I thought it was clever.

True, but it captured the atmosphere of baseball so well that I think it stands as a sports movie. This actually made me laugh more than most comedies. Some of the guys I couldn't tell if they were actors or guys playing themselves.I read an article I think in Maxim not too long ago about Beane's new obsession being Soccer and he is doing a lot of consulting work for European leagues right now. The level that they were able to combine economics and sports was just phenomenal. I thought I had a pretty good handle on Moneyball theory before the film but I really need to finally sit down and read this book.

This was surprisingly good. The first 20 minutes or so were a little cheesy or rushed to me, but once Caesar was home, i really began to enjoy it. By mid film you are invested in Caesar as a character, as if he was human and not some cgi. Really well done. 4/5

Question: how did this movie differ and /or intergrate the original planet of the apes (not walberg version)? Also, what is significance, if any, of the number 1228?

Contagion - I can understand why people didn't like this film. The pacing was slow and overall, while a global pandemic was occurring, there wasn't a whole lot of tension. But I think it felt honest. It felt the way something like this would go down in reality, and reality is generally boring. While I liked it I simply don't buy the ultimate explanation for the outbreak, everything I know about virus transmission tells me that their explanation is pretty much impossible, at least the way they define it early in the film.

I think it's worth watching but that is probably more as a PSA than anything else, it is not a strong recommendation.

Ended up seeing this today. And I gotta say, I'm really surprised at the acclaim that this film has received, as I thought it was an absolute trainwreck from start to finish. Just 2+ hours of over the top, over acted stupidity. Besson is to subtlety as pizza is to vegetable. I've come to the conclusion that Besson is just a terrible director, and an even worse screenwriter. Watching a Besson film is like watching Idiocracy except in different settings. Literally every single minor character in the film is a complete imbecile. Every. Single. One. And it's pretty hard to believe Leon as this ultra skilled hitman the way he acts like Mr. Bean all the time. The only redeemable thing in the whole film was Natalie Portman's performance, which I actually thought was one of her best performances I've ever seen. I also thought Oldman did fairly well considering how poorly written his character was. After seeing this and The 5th Element I can't imagine ever giving another Besson film a try. After reading through this thread though, pretty well everyone loved it except for El Floppo who was called "uppity" for his criticism. I guess El Floppo now has some company

Haven't seen the original in a long time, though Rise is not based on the original, it's based on one of the sequels.

Never seen Leon: The Professional before, anyone know what's the best version of the film to see on the first go? The theatrical version is 110 minutes, International version is 136 minutes, and the Directors Cut is 133 minutes.

Ended up seeing this today. And I gotta say, I'm really surprised at the acclaim that this film has received, as I thought it was an absolute trainwreck from start to finish. Just 2+ hours of over the top, over acted stupidity. Besson is to subtlety as pizza is to vegetable. I've come to the conclusion that Besson is just a terrible director, and an even worse screenwriter. Watching a Besson film is like watching Idiocracy except in different settings. Literally every single minor character in the film is a complete imbecile. Every. Single. One. And it's pretty hard to believe Leon as this ultra skilled hitman the way he acts like Mr. Bean all the time. The only redeemable thing in the whole film was Natalie Portman's performance, which I actually thought was one of her best performances I've ever seen. I also thought Oldman did fairly well considering how poorly written his character was. After seeing this and The 5th Element I can't imagine ever giving another Besson film a try. After reading through this thread though, pretty well everyone loved it except for El Floppo who was called "uppity" for his criticism. I guess El Floppo now has some company

I love The Professional. It's one of my all time sentimental favorites

All I can say is I can't imagine why. Although apparently most everyone else can. I'm straight shuked about this to be honest.

I'm not much of a Besson fan. But this movie works. Portman's awesome. Reno's awesome. Oldman's awesome.

I'm not much of a Besson fan. But this movie works. Portman's awesome. Reno's awesome. Oldman's awesome.

I suppose Reno was satisfactory, but I'd of preferred if they got the genuine article Rowan Atkinson for the role.

Rise of the Planet of the ApesThis was surprisingly good. The first 20 minutes or so were a little cheesy or rushed to me, but once Caesar was home, i really began to enjoy it. By mid film you are invested in Caesar as a character, as if he was human and not some cgi. Really well done. 4/5Question: how did this movie differ and /or intergrate the original planet of the apes (not walberg version)? Also, what is significance, if any, of the number 1228?

Haven't seen the original in a long time, though Rise is not based on the original, it's based on one of the sequels.

Yeah, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.I have Rise at home for this weekend, very psyched. I was a real Planet of the Apes freak when I was a kid. Even loved the TV show. I'm so glad this has gotten such wide ranging praise. I just hope I'm not over-hyping myself for it.
