Hugo - What a charming movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. My current favorite of the best picture nominees I have seen (Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris & The Help). I may have enjoyed the aspects of ToL and MiP more but Hugo is the most complete film by far. The 3D was also very well done and added a lot of depth to the film. It was entertaining, funny, sweet and stunning to look at. Very much worth seeing in 3D before it leaves the theaters.
Really want to see this but cant believe its still in theaters anywhere. The 24 screen theater around here barely still has The Grey showing.

I've only seen two Sophia Coppola films: The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. I thought Suicides was very interesting. But Lost in Translation was a lot of style over substance.
I liked "Lost in Translation" quite a bit. I thought Murray was perfectly cast and Scarlett Johansson was great too. I thought that film did a much better job of presenting emptiness and loneliness than "Somewhere" did which tread some of the same territory (Hollywood star feeling lost and not knowing where his life is going etc.).
Translation's a pretty movie, but it's kind of ephemeral.
i had to look that word up

Mother:

Great movie with a great performance from the lead actress. A Korean film about a mother taking it upon herself to investigate a murder that her son has been arrested for. The police are no help because it is an open and shut case for them. Won't go much into detail, except to say that this one is a recommend watch. The one weak part of the movie for me was the son, and was finding him really distracting throughout the movie. 8/10.
Really enjoyed this film. I didn't find the son distracting, he was mentally handicapped it seemed natural for the character to me.I am surprised it did not get a best foreign film nomination but I only saw A Prophet and The Secret in Their Eyes which were both excellent so perhaps the other three nominees were also on par with Mother, in which case I should queue them up immediately.
The Secret in Their Eyes is due up in my next round of films.
Add A Prophet if you haven't seen that one, too. Far superior to Mother (which I liked) IMO.
I think this one is in my pile from the library in the living room. Have a very odd mix of foreign movies and horror movies in there. Pretty sure Dogtooth, Secret in Their Eyes, and Dogtooth are in there mixed with Dawn of the Dean, The Wicker Man, and The Evil Dead.
Nicholas Cage or the good one?Another vote for A Prophet. I really enjoyed Dogtooth & SiTE too.
Older one. I will go out of my way to avoid a Nic Cage feature. The only one I have been able to stomach recently was Kick-###, and it helped that he wasn't in it that much.
None of them are near as good as Kick-A, but Trespass, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and Season of the Witch are surprisingly pretty good for what they are, especially BL:PoCNO

I've been on a sci-fi kick lately, so from the late to the party file:

Sunshine

I really liked this, including the plot change. However I agree with some of the hang ups others had with the 8 characters not behaving as one would expect. I don't have much to add to what has already been said but I do think it is a must see for Sci-fi fans. 4/5

Serenity

A little cookie cutter feel to this but a very enjoyable film. It reminded me of several films I have seen mashed into one. For instance The Operative reminded me of a Cleric from Equilibrium. Not groudbreaking but a very enjoyable film. 3.75/5

Anyone have any sci-fi recommendations for me?
CubeMimic
Huge fan of Mimic...One of my favorite under the radar sci-fi movies. Almost non-stop tension after the first half hour or so. Looks like its on instant watch, never seen it in HD, might have to fire it up tonight  It might be more a little more horror than sci-fi, but another movie that came out around the same time as Mimic that I liked was The Relic.

Margin Call 4.8-5 stars. This is an excellent film, with a well written script and excellent performances. Hits on things that are extremely relevant today. Takes a potentially boring/complicated subject matter and displays it in way that is mesmerizing*. I'm all for action movies, but this is a movie where there's no action but tons of tension, really kept me on the edge of my seat more than most films in the last few years.

*Disclaimer: I'm tangentially related to the subject matter, so I knew what they were talking about. If people didn't understand/relate to this movie, I would understand.
Agree with everything, especially the bolded. Once Spock figures everything out, the dialogue just carries Margin Call non-stop until its over. I think I put it in my review here as a spoiler, but my only complaint about it was the final scene which felt so out of place in such a congruous film that it seemed appended.Think this was much more deserving of a best picture nom than half of what got nominated.

Fish Tank:

Bleak British drama about a girl and her messed up life and family. Think on the lines of a British version of Kids, maybe. Her life changes when mum brings home her new boyfriend played by Mr. Fassbender (he has been everywhere the last few years). The movie was elevated by the acting of the main girl and the new boyfriend and the few scenes of them together. I later read that the girl might have been playing herself a bit in the movie. However, I found the rest of the movie and characters to get a little tiresome and brought it down a notch for me - especially the mom's character. Still say it's worth a viewing, but just not quite as good as some of the other movies I have been trying to catch up on from the 00s. 6.5/10

The Wicker Man:

The Mist:

Liked this one a bit more the 2nd time around now that I was prepared for the silly looking monster f/x. Unlike a lot of other movies, the ending elevates this one as well. Still would hesitate to call this one of the better horror movies of the 00s, but it is definitely worth the ride.
I just watched The Mist myself based on reviews in this thread. For much of the movie I was thinking how cheesy it was and how it reminded me of Maximum Overdrive. I agree that the ending is much better than the movie. I couldn't get past them calling the fog a mist either. It's not a bad movie if you have time to kill and you enjoy the genre. What's up with all the actors from this being in The Walking Dead?

I liked the movie, but the book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is particularly awesome. Pretty sure there is a whole series, I read just the first two as a teen.

Loved the Mist. It was very faithful to King's short story which was always one of my favorites but one that ended when they left the store. Big fan of the shocker ending they came up with. The insects looked "cheesy" in the actual story too, with them being from another dimension and all.

In the right hands The Mist would have been a classic. Something that will be remade eventually.

For those who aren't aware, TCM is doing 31 days of Oscars leading up with the Oscars. Their recent programming has been freaking awesome. I have like 15 films set to DVR.

Mimic gets goofy at the end, but it's a fun movie.

Martha Marcy May Marlene:

What a damn impressive movie for being a 1st film for the director and basically the same for the Olsen twins' younger sister. Without giving too much away, the movie is about Elizabeth Olsen getting away from a situation and reconnecting with her estranged sister. Got a Polanski vibe as the psychological tension builds up in the last half of the movie. This movie is a glaring omission from the Oscar nominations - I would say it's the best movie I've seen so far of the 2011 releases. I think the ending will put some off though. Highly recommended - 8.5/10

Primer is a mind ####, and is hard to follow, but it's probably the most realistic time travel movie made.

If you like Sunshine you would probably like both Event Horizon and Pandorum. Maybe Sphere too. Supernova (there are two flicks with that name, you want the one with James Spader and Angela Bassett) is interesting as well. Mission to Mars is a favorite of mine.

The Skin I Live In. Antonio Banderas in a creepy role as a plastic surgeon lacking any scruples or morals who invents a new skin can withstand a lot of abuse without breaking. Strangely sexy at times and decidedly dark before becoming a violent arthouse flick. Something didn't quite click for me but it was still a very good movie.

80% RT.

again with some friends. Two friends loved it (one because it was visually stunning the other because it was sick, twisted, and violent). One friend disliked it and the remaining friend hated it (because it was sick, twisted, and violent and his former fear of clowns has come back tenfold). Definitely a cult movie but I'm going to go ahead and promote it again. Could definitely be better in the hands of a more experienced director and a firmer hand, but it's the same negatives that also make this roam well into the land of entertainingly disturbing. If Rob Zombie movies don't entertain you, avoid this movie. It easily reaches those levels of violence.

2010: The Year We Make Contact

Finally gave this one a real chance and I'm glad I did. It doesn't have the ethereal or artsy qualities of 2001 but it's a great way to continue the story and really helps explain a lot of the cryptic stuff from 2001.

Really underrated flick and an essential for people that don't "get" 2001 on its more existential levels.

Caught Take Me Home Tonight on netflix w/ the wife yesterday. Terrible acting. Same plot as every other lost high school sweetheart movie. Poor character development. Perhaps it was the cheesy 80's sound track that brought me back to my youth, but I loved it.

3.5/5 for me. For everyone else it's easily a 1/5.

In my effort to watch older movies with high ratings, I watched the Kubrick film Barry Lyndon.

About the best way I can describe is as a bipolar film.

The first half was really good with interesting turns of events for the main character.

Suddenly in the second half he turns into a detestable SOB and the film crawls to an agonizing conclusion.

Strange film from a very good director.

Thought it was OK, but just seemed like it was trying too hard to show the audience how 80s it was (if that makes any sense)

The Square

2008 R 106 minutes

Bored with married life, middle-aged Ray devises a dangerous scheme to steal a large sum of money and run away with his beautiful young mistress, Carla, in this neo-noir thriller set in a decrepit section of Sydney. It looks as if the plot involving Carla's unscrupulous husband and a career arsonist is a success -- until an anonymous blackmailer threatens to expose the truth.

This was a suprisingly good thriller. The thick Aussie accents will be difficult for some to understand but overall this flick was better than expected.

I knew what this film was before I watched it, how it's a "documentary" type movie. That didn't sway me. But the movie did nothing for me. It was boring, and not very interesting.

3/10, and that is generous.

Saw it and wasn't impressed at all. In fact I thought it was bad. However I have felt that way about Coen bros movies before and enjoyed them on subsequent viewings.

One of the worst movies of recent years.I can't figure out why anyone would like it.

A schmuck being taken advantage of by jerks, a weird ending and whatever humor it was supposed to have went right by me.

Not surprised that everybody doesn't love it. I did love it. The characters are great. The textures are great. The questioning of faith with no answers...great. In fact, I need to watch it again. Haven't seen it since the theater. But I remember thinking it was fantastic and that they managed to find another new vein of strange that still managed to be Coen-esque. :lmao: Sy Ableman. That name was stuck in my head for a whole day after watching this. I liked the movie, although the humor is subtle, and it doesn't surprise me that it's not received well by some.

Take Shelter - Taut psychological drama. It's very well done but the pacing is somewhat slow and there is one scene where the tension feels contrived (but it leads to a great rant by Michael Shannon). Michael Shannon seems to have legitimate acting chops, though I wonder if he could pull off a non-dramatic role. Ultimately I enjoyed it because it is very well acted and keeps you guessing whether Shannon is having true premonitions or slowly losing his mind.

I know it would totally change the movie but I wondered what the movie would've been like if shown from the wife's point of view. I kept wanting to slip into the "madness" but never really got there. I also felt like much of the tension was forced. The acting is very nice and I like the movie but it didn't pull me in the way a great psychological movie should.

I also felt like much of the tension was forced. The acting is very nice and I like the movie but it didn't pull me in the way a great psychological movie should.
I agree, something was missing. But still, I thought Shannon was excellent and with Chastain was enough to hold my interest. Shannon seems to have a natural quiet seething just under the surface that he uses to great effect.
I don't need a true resolution (crazy or prophetic) but I am not sure what we got in Take Shelter, which I imagine was probably intentional. And it sucks for them that they built that nice shelter in Ohio only to have the storm hit while they were in Myrtle Beach. DOH!

 Reminded me of a Coen brothers movie. Really well done.
Speaking of the Coen brothers has anyone seen A Serious Man? Thoughts?
Lots of reviews in this thread for A Serious Man. I enjoyed its weirdness the first time around. The second time, I was so repulsed by Richard Kind that I didn't even finish it.

Been watching too many dark depressing dramas lately, so I thought I would cleanse the palate with a couple of mindless rom-coms tonight:

Friends With Benefits - predictable story with two people trying to have the sex without the feelings. Was pleasantly surprised with the humor in this one. Mila and Justin played off each other well, and it helps that Timberlake is actually a fairly funny guy to begin with. This one was helped by the R rating as well. Actually one of the better entries in the genre in the past year or so along with Crazy Stupid Love.

What's Your Number -

You can pass right by this one. Really dumb premise and the Faris/Cpt. America combo was a dud. This one couldn't hold my attention, and I ended up reading a magazine during the 2nd half of the movie.

Ultimately I enjoyed it because it is very well acted and keeps you guessing whether Shannon is having true premonitions or slowly losing his mind.
shannon is weirdly intense. he was a stage actor with steppenwolf before his film career really took off. my wife worked at steppenwolf for a time and saw him in rehearsals for McDonaugh's "The Pillowman" a lot. i got to see him once it got to previews and he's pretty amazing on stage. it was that same kind of thing he does with his turn in Revolutionary Road. i love actors like him.

Tower Heist: Pretty boring. Was going to say that it was waaay to long for a comedy then checked and saw it was only 104 minutes  . A couple laughs but completely forgettable. 2/5

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy: A group of friends (led by Jason Sudeikis) plan an orgy for their final labor day weekend together; hilarity ensues. Beautiful women, good laughs and a story that moves quickly. Tower Heist should take notes. 4/5
