This one was brought up a couple weeks ago in here. Very good documentary from the director of Man on Wire about an experiment to teach a chimp language via sign language. Like all great docs, this one got me fired up. Mostly I was just annoyed with the hippies that are going out of their way to humanize a chimp, but can't take it when the chimp acts like a chimp. I think the movie does a good job of exploring this desire in us to do it - is it our fear that we really can't control nature like we want to, and that makes us feel even smaller and more alone than we already do? I think the only human I liked in the movie was Bob. He seemed to have the balance needed - compassion for the chimp and a respect of the nature of the animal. Recommend viewing, and thanks to whoever brought it up and reminded me to bump it up the queue.

This is actually a solid, overlooked neo-noir film. Excellent ensemble cast - Newman, Hackman, Sarandon, James Garner, Witherspoon, Liev Schreiber

I picked it up this morning. Thought it was pretty good. The plot was a little predictable but everything else - dialogue, acting, scoring - was excellent. Probably a good 6.5/10.

Watched "Let Me In" last night on Showtime. One of the best horror films I've seen in a long time. Extremely well done. Chloe Moretz is an amazing young actress. I think she's a better actress at a young age than Natalie Portman and Dakota Fanning were.

Wow what a beautifully boring movie. I should have listened to a review that said it was the Avatar of 2011 (not quite as bad storywise as Avatar), and seen it in 3D at the theater. Absolutely stunning movie to look at, but I was checking my watch quite a bit during this one. Just too many plot holes and filler side characters for this one to really stick with me. Recommend watching this one once because it is great to look at, but that's it. One too many top movies this year about the good old days.

Avatar in a quality theater in 3D was boring?

Sort of. Sorry if I worded this incorrectly. Both these movies are all about the visual experience. I am very glad that I saw Avatar in the theater, but no way would I watch it now at home, as the actual movie was bad. Yes, I would have been bored if I didn't have cool 3D stuff to look at. I did not like Hugo, but I could see how seeing it in the theaters would greatly enhance the experience, and I should have gone this route.

While I would agree the storyline and dialogue in Avatar is cliche, I still enjoyed it when I watched it again at home a few months ago

I know it's not cool to like Avatar, but oh well. I like it.

This was a suprisingly good thriller. The thick Aussie accents will be difficult for some to understand but overall this flick was better than expected.

Reminded me of a Coen brothers movie. Really well done.

Speaking of the Coen brothers has anyone seen A Serious Man? Thoughts?

I never got around to that one. Looked great. Curious to hear from those who saw it.

Some conspiracy stuff too a la X Files. Campy, but interesting. Subtitles as the whole film is in Norweigan. 3.5/5

Better watch out. I took a lot of heat for posing it as the median point for film snobbery. It's an incredibly flawed and boring movie, but in film snob circles you better say you liked it or you get lumped into the "you just don't get what makes for great cinema, go watch a Michael Bay movie" crowd.Most movies allow for some disagreement amongst the snob crowd, but I've found this to be the one movie that doesn't. You either like it or "just don't get it". (If you were smart enough, or knew more about film, you'd love it.)

Thanks for the warning but we are all entitled to our own opinion. I am not too concerned with what other's have to say if they disagree with me saying I was disappointed, and or enjoyed, any specific movie.

At this point I think if you've decided it sucks you probably won't like it. I really enjoyed it but I'm glad I watched it when I did, well before most of the hype and anti-hype. It's funny, it seems like those Frenchies have been working together for a while, just making silly French spy spoofs and stuff. Came up with this goofy little idea, got the Weinsteins on board and boom, Oscars for everybody. Good for them.

It's a good movie and deserves a lot of credit for being original. Being a pretty weak year made it an easy call for Best Picture.

I agree with KP on Hugo, it was just kind of a dud for me. The boy can't act, the girl from Kick ### does OK muddling through a phony British accent but there's nothing inspiring here. Sasha Baron Cohen and Emily Mortimer are wasted. Aside from the visuals it seemed like a big waste of time, even moreso than Avatar, which at least had giant smurfs on pterodactyls. All of us in this house loved The Artist, but none of us liked Hugo.

This. I was never engaged by the story or characters in Hugo. Maybe if Avatar had never been made it would have had a wow factor for me, but I doubt it.

If anyone has Amazon Prime and hasn't seen it, check out Where Eagles Dare. Clint Eastwood vs Nazis. He actually kills more people in this movie than in any of his other ones. He's not the lead, Richard Burton is, but it's a good flick.

Good flick. Burton is in top form. Kind of hard for many people these days to understand what the fuss was. Dude was a great - if often hammy - actor back in the day.

Just watched "who's afraid of Virginia Wolf" again last night and boy howdy do he and Taylor sizzle on screen. Probably the greatest "I know what buttons to push, I'll rip your soul out and stomp on the pieces of your heart" relationship script ever penned and the acting between the two leads brought such vicious force to the screen that you feel dirty watching and you just want to grab your coat and quietly slink away from the party while the couple destroys one another.See it if you haven't already, well worth it.

Don't recall if 50/50 was discussed in here, but just saw it and thought it was terrific. Not overly sentimental, funny whenever it tried to be, engaging start to finish. Thought Gordon-Levitt, Rogan, Huston and Kendrick all excelled. Kendrick was great in Up in the Air but didn't guess I'd be able to like her so much in a role like the one she played. As someone who typically hopes for ambiguous or honest endings, this was a movie I found myself desperately hoping for a happy ending.

Maniac:

Messed up little slasher movie from 1980. Interesting look into the mind of a killer ala Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and others of the same ilk. Here we have another killer with deep rooted mommy issues killing women and bringing a trophy from each. Some creepy stuff and some great f/x work for that time. However, it was bogged down by an unbelievable relationship and a plot that really didn't advance in the 90mins. Above average horror flick for a fan of the genre that feels like they have seen everything.

Agreed 100%. Terrific movie. Rogan is at his best when used as a side character. JGL really shined in this one.

Nope. But we mainly went to the movies on birthdays or if I went with a friend's family. Looking at a list of 1982 movies, I saw these in the theater:The Dark Crystal - (Good Movie)

Airplane II - (Must see)

Conan the Barbarian - (Almost a must see)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - (Must see)

They Call Me Bruce? (One of those movies I liked as a kid and am afraid to see as an adult and realize it was really awful. That happened with The Last Dragon.)

I think the reason I missed it in theaters is due to the fact that I was 16 when it came out. I thought it was a kid's movie, and I'd already moved on to violent horror films at 16.

I swear I have been checking into this thread for the past month or so to see if anyone watched this movie and I had recently just flat out given up and accepted that no one from the ffa was going to watch it.I know it's crazy but I am actually excited to see that someone else besides me really liked it.

Don't recall if 50/50 was discussed in here, but just saw it and thought it was terrific. Not overly sentimental, funny whenever it tried to be, engaging start to finish. Thought Gordon-Levitt, Rogan, Huston and Kendrick all excelled. Kendrick was great in Up in the Air but didn't guess I'd be able to like her so much in a role like the one she played. As someone who typically hopes for ambiguous or honest endings, this was a movie I found myself desperately hoping for a happy ending.

The more I think about it, the more I love this movie.

Great movie. It must have been an interesting experience for Rogen, considering his history with the writer.

I went to see it with my daughter. I guess that might be one of the reasons I liked it so much. We both really liked it so it was one of those bonding experiences. That probably subconsciously made me like it even more.

I was on the fence in deciding whether to watch this movie. You could say I was 50/50!!! You all convinced me it's worth a shot. Im gonna check it out.
