The Square - Australian film recommended in this thread. Not bad, worth checking out. No major twists or turns just a good realistic, gritty thriller. 3/5
i saw this a week or so back and liked it. i think someone in the thread described it as almost Coen Bros-eque. i would agree that it has a similar sort of feel.
Yeah, I said I felt it was comparable to a decent Coen Brothers flick. Not comparable with their best but better than their clunkers. It feels like Coen Brothers at the beginning of their career.

Friends with Benefits - the wife and I watched this Saturday. Overall a decent movie for a "chick flick". Kunis is hot, want to know if the walk away was a body double.... Timberlake was pretty solid.

Really drug along in the middle. Had some decent humor. Not sure how I would rate such a chicky flick but it was enjoyable. 6 or 7 out of 10

:bag:
She did use a butt double.
:kicksrock: IT'S STILL REAL TO ME

Saw a preview for Win Win. Has anyone seen it. I can't do a search since it is a 3 letter word.
I haven't seen all of it. It was on HBO or Showtime recently and I wanted to make time to watch it from the start and never did. I kept catching it in the middle but I definitely liked the little I watched.Might have to check on demand now... Not a great endorsement

Melancholia - What a boring, horrible POS this was. We got it on a couple of reviews here. I guess either we're too dumb to 'get it' or didn't give it enough time. We watched the entire first chapter and couldn't take anymore. Avoid avoid avoid.

The Whistleblower - Decent rental. Sad that that #### really takes place. Interesting and should piss you off a bit. Recommended.

Drive - A ton of discussion on this in its own thread, so I'll just say that it started really slowly, but we ended up enjoying it. Not thrilled the with the ending, but it didn't ruin the movie for me. Recommended, but it's definitely not anything like Gone in 60 seconds or other types of faster-paced action/dramas like that.

Gone in 60 seconds is a drama?

Yeah, I phrased that poorly. I just meant that Drive is nothing like Gi60s.

I dig. I think the fact that I went in bracing for a turd sandwich like Fast Five and was thrilled that it wasn't anything even remotely close.IMO it's a good flick that I highly recommend.

Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory - A must watch for anyone who has followed the nearly two decade case of the West Memphis 3; three teenagers who were accused and convicted, despite what appears to be a serious lack of any evidence, of brutally killing three eight year old boys in 1993. They have been in prison fighting the conviction for the past 17 years and this is the third HBO documentary profiling the case.
Where did you get this from? I haven't seen it anywhere.

The Sitter: Terrible even by Jonah Hill standards. .5/5
Was just coming in to post something similar. Couldn't make it through this one last night. I also watched The Muppets last night. Enjoyed the hell out of this movie. Not the best of their movies, but if you like the Muppets at all, I don't see how you could leave the experience without a smile on your face. The first 30 mins were fairly Muppetless (as pointed out by my 5 year old), but still a recommend out of me. 7/10

Moon...Loved it....Its funny how this direct DVD from Netflix has been sitting on my couch for about 2 months before I finally watched it tonight, yet I continue to watch most of the garbage they have streaming every other night or so. At around 20-25 minutes in, I was thinking "okay, Im not sure I can handle this for even 90 minutes but its decent so far" and then 5 minutes later I thought "####, alright Im ready for the ride"...Ive liked Sam Rockwell for awhile, but this was easily his best and most notable performance to date. Without looking up that years (2009?) best actor nominees, Im surprised he wasnt nominated because I dont recall that happening. What in the first half is sci-fi leans more towards drama in the latter half and it was even better. I wouldnt call anything twists here, but there are multiple well done turns that left me very happy. Really enjoyed this and even was telling myself during the movie that I couldnt believe how good it turned out after a slow start....4.5/5

Kimjongilia - well, that was a bummer. When people say things like 'we could never have another Nazi Germany' I'll point them to this.

Loved it as well. Great performance by Rockwell. Another one of his that doesn't get mentioned much is Choke. Funny and weird and fans of the show Community will get to see Brita topless.

In Time - cool concept, but it kind of went off the rails about half way through. a lot of the dialogue was pretty hokey, especially from the girl. Possibly worth a rental. 5/10

Choke was awesome. I probably liked it even more than Moon, although I dont think Id say it was better.

Nothing particularly special, but I enjoyed it and watched the whole thing. 3/5 stars

HBO GO. I think that is the only place you can see it currently.

Green Lantern

Kinda what you'd expect.
... to never make my rental queue
:goodposting:
It's not great by any stretch of the imagination. However, I still enjoyed it more than Thor.
Thor wasn't anything special but pretty much every single scene of Green Lantern was the suck.
Sometimes it's about expectations, and I had 0 for Green Lantern. I thought Thor was a huge waste of talent and I was too annoyed after the scene on the ice planet where I couldn't tell WTF was going on at all - looked like a blur of gray.

I thought Green Lantern would suck and it definitely sucked far beyond my greatest expectations. So it has that going for it, which is nice.

The Social Network

I really liked this movie. I read the book about it a few years ago. I don't normally pay that close attention to casting, but I felt like all the main characters were cast very well.

Timberlake played his part perfect. I thought Eisenberg played Zukerberg perfect. I thought the Winklevoss twins payed their part well. And Zukerberg's partner Saverin was played well.

I came away from it loving Zukerberg. The opening scene where he breaks up with his girlfriend... I'm not saying I am Mark Zukerberg but I could relate to that scene very well. I am just terrible at talking to women and I usually end up overanalyzing things waaay to much. The scene where he tells the lawyer that he does NOT have Zukerberg's full attention was awesome.

I thought they did an excellent job of following the book, and the characters / setting just did a great job of explaining the circumstances of how it all went down imo.

Choke is immensely underrated. I liked it more than Moon.

Melancholia - From the opening to the ending shot this film is filled with beautiful imagery and a powerful score. But this is definitely a slow film and after the opening sequence, which I found captivating, it took some time for me to emotionally invest myself in the characters and the story. However it did end up growing on me and by the second act I was definitely into it.

It portrays a fascinating contrast of a clinical depressive (Dunst) in two incredibly diverse situations, her wedding and the impending doom of the Earth (not a spoiler). This is contrasted on another level with her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who is presumably not a depressive, dealing with the same situations. There really isn't much more to it than that, except that Kiefer Sutherland is in it and almost doesn't kill anyone.

I know Dunst is a bit of a polarizing figure in these parts (I'm a fan) but I thought she was tremendous in this role and, once again, demonstrated that she has serious acting chops. Plus I've always thought she is cute and I was happy to see that she gets naked in this film. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that they're real and they're spectacular (and quite big too, which I didn't expect).

This is a slow movie with an orchestra backed score so it definitely isn't for everyone, however I really enjoyed it and I think many people in here would too. For those Lars von Trier fans who were permanently put off by Antichrist (which I am still happy to have never seen) I think it's worth giving him another chance with this film.
