Kinda what you'd expect.

It's not great by any stretch of the imagination. However, I still enjoyed it more than Thor.
I find most of these comic book movies to be very similar. Not terrible, but not that great, either. I think that's why I liked Punisher: War Zone so much - because it's very much for adults only and not your typical comic book movie.

Punisher isn't your typical comic book hero. I am glad they went over the top with it, even if it bombed. Wish it would get a sequel with Stevens, he was a great Punisher.

Melancholia - From the opening to the ending shot this film is filled with beautiful imagery and a powerful score. But this is definitely a slow film and after the opening sequence, which I found captivating, it took some time for me to emotionally invest myself in the characters and the story. However it did end up growing on me and by the second act I was definitely into it.

It portrays a fascinating contrast of a clinical depressive (Dunst) in two incredibly diverse situations, her wedding and the impending doom of the Earth (not a spoiler). This is contrasted on another level with her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who is presumably not a depressive, dealing with the same situations. There really isn't much more to it than that, except that Kiefer Sutherland is in it and almost doesn't kill anyone.

I know Dunst is a bit of a polarizing figure in these parts (I'm a fan) but I thought she was tremendous in this role and, once again, demonstrated that she has serious acting chops. Plus I've always thought she is cute and I was happy to see that she gets naked in this film. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that they're real and they're spectacular (and quite big too, which I didn't expect).

This is a slow movie with an orchestra backed score so it definitely isn't for everyone, however I really enjoyed it and I think many people in here would too. For those Lars von Trier fans who were permanently put off by Antichrist (which I am still happy to have never seen) I think it's worth giving him another chance with this film.
Your first paragraph is pretty well exactly how I felt. And although I didn't think anything special of Dunst previously, she was very very good in this film both acting wise and physically.... ( )

Moon...Loved it....Its funny how this direct DVD from Netflix has been sitting on my couch for about 2 months before I finally watched it tonight, yet I continue to watch most of the garbage they have streaming every other night or so. At around 20-25 minutes in, I was thinking "okay, Im not sure I can handle this for even 90 minutes but its decent so far" and then 5 minutes later I thought "####, alright Im ready for the ride"...Ive liked Sam Rockwell for awhile, but this was easily his best and most notable performance to date. Without looking up that years (2009?) best actor nominees, Im surprised he wasnt nominated because I dont recall that happening. What in the first half is sci-fi leans more towards drama in the latter half and it was even better. I wouldnt call anything twists here, but there are multiple well done turns that left me very happy. Really enjoyed this and even was telling myself during the movie that I couldnt believe how good it turned out after a slow start....4.5/5
Loved it as well. Great performance by Rockwell. Another one of his that doesn't get mentioned much is Choke. Funny and weird and fans of the show Community will get to see Brita topless.
Choke was awesome. I probably liked it even more than Moon, although I dont think Id say it was better.
Choke is immensely underrated. I liked it more than Moon.
Which would you say is the better film though? I gotta go Moon.

I know Moon is a favorite around here - and I understand why. Rockwell's one of my favorite actors. Two things: Moon is a good concept deftly rendered. I just enjoyed Choke more and would way rather re-watch Choke than Moon. You know, comedies are really hard. When a movie makes me laugh out loud several times, I tend to rank them high.

So Three Stooges is going to bomb at the box office, right?? Not only looks terrible, but kids have no idea who the Stooges are and its not like 50+ year old guys who watched it as a kid will be going out in droves to catch it at the theater.
My sons are 6 and 3. They love the Stooges and are bugging me to take them.

I rarely rewatch movies but when I do, it's usually a comedy. Moon was a better experience as a movie than Choke so I guess I'd say I liked it more.

I'll watch it because the Farrelly brothers made it, but the sight of Larry in 2012 makes me queasy.

The Sitter

Bizarre and watchable in a train wreck kind of way. It tackles dramatic subjects like teen homosexuality, foster homes, and homewrecking without any substance at all in a comedy where the main character has absolutely no likeable traits. It's like taking Dickie Roberts, making it more uncomfortable, and dropping F bombs, and I liked Dickie Roberts.

Sam Rockwell's character is completely overacted, completely awesome, and totally out of place.

2/5

Good Night and Good Luck - Pretty much any scene with David Strathairn as Murrow was positively riveting. Dude brought it, hard and it was enough to carry this film and make me feel like it was good.

Pretty much everything other than Strathairn was mediocre and I thought was poor storytelling. For example, I am not sure what the point of Robert Downey & Patricia Clarkson's characters was. The fall of Ray Wise's character was never put into context nor was the relationship with "O'Brien". Did Clooney honestly expect the audience in 2005 to know who Don Hollenbeck was and the details surrounding his fall? The ending was never put into context either, Alcoa's decision to withdraw sponsorship was never explained, which would have been particularly helpful considering it came after Joe McCarthy was disgraced and Murrow was validated for his stance.

Good movie but flawed enough that I am surprised it was nominated for best picture. Overall 2005 didn't seem like a particularly strong year for film IMO.

It's been awhile but IIRC Choke started off really strong but kind of fell apart in the 2nd & 3rd acts.

I didn't really care for Choke the movie too much, mostly because I was such a huge fan of the book and they left out the parts the meant the most to me.

Like the chapter devoted to what the goals and aspirations were of a man who sits in a room being filmed while a mangy orangutang inserts chesnuts into him rectally.

If only it had more scenes like that.

I remember a "WTF?!" part in the middle, but I thought it recovered.

:goodposting:
It's not great by any stretch of the imagination. However, I still enjoyed it more than Thor.
Thor wasn't anything special but pretty much every single scene of Green Lantern was the suck.
Truth.
I thought this was that one with Seth Rogen but thats Green Hornet. Green Lantern looks terrible, although Im sure I'll subject myself to it at some point. I really cant see how it would be better than Thor in any way, and I havent seen Thor either.

The Shortcut.....this was okay enough, and I like Shannon Woodward, but the last 10 minutes or so were totally unfounded and ruined what was an average horror/thriller at best with a somewhat unique story for the genre....1.5/5

Way to keep an open mind before watching movies. ;) I think Thor offended my sensibilities more because there was more talent involved. You have Portman, Hopkins, etc.. and it was a waste of my time. Combine that with not thinking Thor is that cool as a superhero - I usually can't get into superheroes who are gods/aliens. Green Lantern is just as bad as a movie, but I had more fun with it and was able to go with it more - again it's about expectations.

Gotta love this thread - I am wasting time debating subpar superhero movies.

Men of a Certain Age

Finally had a chance to start this series. Ray Romano, Scott Bacula and Andre Braugher star in this smart series about middle aged men. Highly recommended.

Project Nim - Buncha hippies smoking dope with a chimp and raising it like a human. What could go wrong? This is one of those documentaries that I found equal parts fascinating and infuriating. It's quite good and certainly worth a watch but it can be tough at times.

The Guard - Love, love, love this movie. Brendan Gleeson is easily one of the best actors going right now. The guy just brings it and is convincing in pretty much everything I have seen him in. The Guard is smart, funny, well paced and does a remarkable amount of character development in a 96 minute (including credits) time frame without feeling rushed on any level.

Highly recommend.

Great movie. Great example of a movie that doesn't try to reinvent cinema and rather just be the best it can be within the fundamental structure of a crime-drama. Funny, thought-provoking, tightly-written dialogue, doesn't take itself too seriously, cool ending. Obviously Gleeson makes much of it possible, but nothing in the script gets in his way. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I like the superhero stories where there is an internal struggle for the character. Don't understand the question since none of those listed fall into the category I stated - Blade is probably the least interesting to me of the bunch. The others are humans that have something happen to them, create technology to make them super, etc..

I have always thought Superman was boring, and Thor for the same reason - there is no struggle about their powers, how to use them, etc.. it's just who they are.

The Adventures of Tintin - This is a fun adventure film with a decent enough story and top notch animation (technically it's motion capture, but whatever it's still really impressive). But as much as I wanted to enjoy it I found it wanting. I think my problem is that despite multiple chases and daring escapes/rescues I never really felt any sort of tension. Still it's a fun film and decent enough for a watch if you are so inclined.

I agree that it had flaws. Although, as a fan of the series, there were many good things to see.

Yeah, I guess for Thor every problem is pretty much a nail.

Agree here.

Annoying when people want to be at one with nature and animals, but don't respect the nature of the animals they are dealing with. The hippie family were just annoying, especially the mom.

Hot Coffee:

A very interesting doc. on the law system and the battle over "frivolous" lawsuits. Focuses on business' battle to keep cases out of the court system via various ways. As the title suggests there is a bit to do with the famous McDonald's coffee case and using that as a springboard to point to how we are all just money grubbers. Very much an eye opener, and a strong recommend out of me.

How does Choke hold up to the book (which i loved)
I still have yet to make it through one of that dude's books. I think the movies for Choke and Fight Club are the very rare cases where the films are better than the novels.
No way man. Choke movie doesn't hold a candle to the book. I think you need the narrative of the novels to get the full effect of just how damaged and deranged Chuck's characters are. Fincher's adaptation of Fight Club was simply outstanding. I might prefer the movie to that book simply because the movie hits every note in less time.Choke was my favorite book of his. Fight club, if you like the movie, no reason not to read the book. Of the other ones I can recall Survivor was very good until the last 40 pages or so that kind of became just rambling. Lullaby was ok.If you are in to dark humor, do yourself a huge favor and read Choke.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God

Generally, I figure myself to be somewhat of a movie snob, but this movie just didn't work for me. I'm not sure if it was the film that caused me to become tired or if it was my tiredness that caused me to become disinterested with the movie, but I found the film rather boring. I don't really get how many reviewers felt it was a descent into madness type film, as Aguirre displayed madness/exasperation pretty well from his first scene and every scene afterwards; not much character development there. I also found the story to be quite predictable which added greatly to the boredom; however maybe that wouldn't be the case if I saw the film closer to when it was released, as it seems to have had a major influence on many filmmakers and on many other films according to wiki. Having said all that, the film did have some of the most beautiful scenes and interesting locations I've ever seen in a film; the overall cinematography was nothing short of phenomenal (I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to film this movie). The opening and closing scenes were particularly incredible. The soundtrack was also great and very fitting. Overall it's still worth a watch for the cinematography alone, but if you're looking for a great story I'd say look elsewhere.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) - Seen the Swedish version thought this one was just as good, ultimately they were both incredibly similar. I don't think I prefer one over the other. The Swedish version went a little bit more into Salander's childhood, the American had a more nuanced ending. Never read the books so don't know which version holds truer but I imagine they are both about the same.

WTF was up with Fincher's opening credits? That was just bizarre.

Either way, good flick.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

So very slow. You would think the good actors and a well received British spy novel would lend itself to a better creation. But it doesn't.

Its clunky and doesn't have any good "spy" stuff or "intrigue". It tries, but it comes up short of engaging the viewer in any fashion worthwhile. Characters aren't all together bad, but the bottom line is... the movie is boring.

1/5

The opening credits are unlike anything I've ever seen in a movie - and that's why I love Fincher. One could argue that Tattoo contains very similar thematic material from both SE7EN and Zodiac. Either way, Rooney Mara puts this movie way over the top for me. I loved her in it.

Its clunky and doesn't have any good "spy" stuff or "intrigue". It tries, but it comes up short of engaging the viewer in any fashion worthwhile. Characters aren't all together bad, but the bottom line is... the movie is boring.

1/5
Twice I've tried to watch this - the first time I got 5 minutes in and the second I made it 15 before I gave up to watch something more interesting.

Martha Marcy May Marlene:

What a damn impressive movie for being a 1st film for the director and basically the same for the Olsen twins' younger sister. Without giving too much away, the movie is about Elizabeth Olsen getting away from a situation and reconnecting with her estranged sister. Got a Polanski vibe as the psychological tension builds up in the last half of the movie. This movie is a glaring omission from the Oscar nominations - I would say it's the best movie I've seen so far of the 2011 releases. I think the ending will put some off though. Highly recommended - 8.5/10
I love movies like this so I really dug it. Had me on the edge of my seat even though not much was really happening. Wonderfully acted, especially by Olsen ( :stalker: ). Not sure it was my favorite from last year but it's up there. I felt the ending was perfect.
Thanks again to this thread for recommending this. Probably never would have heard of it otherwise. It could have been tightened up a little as it got a little slow at one point but it didn't take away from what was a very good movie. Well acted all around. Olsen has a Maggie Gyllenhaal vibe to her and John Hawkes always is impressive. I didn't hate the ending and actually liked it more as I thought about. Solid movie, highly recommended. 3.5/5

The opening credits are unlike anything I've ever seen in a movie - and that's why I love Fincher. One could argue that Tattoo contains very similar thematic material from both SE7EN and Zodiac. Either way, Rooney Mara puts this movie way over the top for me. I loved her in it.
Agree that the title sequence was different. However, unlike most of his other movies, which also have brilliant titles, this movie felt completely out of place and distracting. Felt like they belonged to an entirely different movie.

I can see that - but younger and better looking.

Warrior - a very energetic movie, but a pretty flawed story as well.

Still, the MMA scenes are just exhilarating. It's definitely worth a viewing.

Saw John Carter this evening and due to lax security, I went into the screen two doors down and caught Hunger Games.

I did not detect a dime's difference between the two. JC for boys, HG for girls, both of them for audiences a heckuva lot younger than I.

Both were entertaining and impeccably produced, but neither was anything special, altho I think I enjoyed JC a bit more. Maybe because I'm a boy.

Hunger Games 2.88/5 stars

John Carter 2.90/5stars

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol

Its just a ton of fancy filmwork. Non-stop. Mind numbing. Boring. But very vivid.

Hard to even watch it to completion. Characters were generally weak. But the action was anything but weak.

Jeremy Renner may have been the best acting of the movie, but his character wasnt anything to remember.

Plot? Who cares, this movie is about thrills. Though the film doesnt lend itself to believability very often

The few bits of comedy worked very well, if for nothing else as a pit stop from trying to keep up with the stunts & action.

2/5

21 Jump Street - Not many laughs for me. Was hoping for something better.

Tree of Life - what the heck was this? I had to turn it off about 40 minutes in. It did nothing for me or my girlfriend. Does it get better? Is there any dialogue whatsoever besides what they are "thinking"?

Overall it's still worth a watch for the cinematography alone, but if you're looking for a great story I'd say look elsewhere.
i like this movie a lot. it isn't the most cohesive or solidly built film but it works. very much a film that is more than the sum of its parts. i like herzog's other films from this era too.

I think you are at least the second person to comment on the opening credits. I thought they were awesome.I read the book and have seen the Swedish version. It wasn't clear to me watching this film how Blomqvist pieced everything together at the end, but other than that I thought it was very well made. Still very similar to the Swedish version, but entertaining to watch nonetheless.

Rooney Mara killed this role.
