Going to see Wrath of the Titans Friday night. I might have to get really, really high to enjoy this movie :bag:
If youre gonna pay, IMAX 3D wouldnt hurt
I can barely stand to pay $7.50, so spending $20 and driving an hour to San Francisco won't be happening.
True.I think it actually looks like a decent popcorn flick /basedonthetrailer
I'd appreciate these movies if my movie buddy was willing to see other kinds of films. It just starts to wear on me.
You need a new movie buddy. It's your BIL, right? I think you need to convince your sister to get a divorce. I like popcorn fare and shlock as much as the next guy but you gotta get some things with depth in there too.
I agree. The thing is, he's pretty smart and he's good company - so the social component is fun.

Go to movies solo. I do whenever I get the opportunity.
You know, I really like watching movies at home alone. But there's something about seeing a movie in the theater I really like to share with someone.

Anyone else a little bummed that the post stat counter for this thread gives a Fatal error?
What does that mean?

Hey, what fun is a movie if you can't enjoy some man on man action with your brother in law? ;)

The Counterfeiters - 2008 Best Foreign Film Oscar. I previously said that Mongol was my favorite foreign film of that year, and it's still my favorite on most levels but The Counterfeiters is the better movie. It tells the story of the largest counterfeiting effort in history as the Nazis, towards the end of the war tried to flood the world markets with counterfeit British Pounds and U.S. Dollars. Many of the notes we have seen before dealing with the plight of the Jews in concentration camps but this film was still able to be original in it's story and presentation. The acting is excellent and the story is compelling.

I strongly recommend it for fans of foreign film.
Duly noted.

Atlas Shrugged Part 1 - I will go on record as saying that I am a fan of Rand's books. Love her or hate her she wasn't afraid to send a strong message and that message has many valid points that I think most people should at least give consideration to. So that being said I can't call this film much more than a mess.

Maybe it was a bad script or bad direction or bad acting (although I think the acting was more flat than outright bad but whatever) but I couldn't help but thinking that Atlas Shrugged simply cannot be translated onto the big screen. The whole felt rushed and there was really no tension just one implausible and out of context scene after another.

I can only imagine that anyone who had not read the book must have been sitting there wondering WTF was going on? America is apparently communist, some people I don't know are disappearing, WTF do I care who John Galt is and I think it has something to do with where the choo-choo goes.

Nice try but fail.

Carnage - It's a decent little meditation on marriage and family that has some good moments but otherwise I thought it was mostly average. Riley often sounds like he is has trouble stringing two words together, Walz has trouble holding onto a single accent and Winslet does not play drunk well at all. Foster gave the best performance and her character was kind of a #####.

It's short, really short (80min) and there is some good stuff to be found but don't lose sleep over missing it.

Riley did have one line that had me :lmao: though "Children suck the life out of you and leave you old and empty. That is the law of nature." His delivery on that one was perfect.

Paradise Now - 2006 nominee for best foreign film. Palestinian film that tells the story of two men who have been selected to be martyrs for Palestine. I reviewed two other nominees Tsotsi (the winner in 2006) and Joyeux Noel and this was by far the best of the bunch.

I am a supporter of Israel so when I saw that this was a Palestinian film about that particular topic I was expecting an anti-Israeli propaganda filled hatchet job. Not even close, well it wasn't exactly pro-Israel or anything but this was an intelligent presentation of the plight of Palestine and the considerations of not just the martyr's cause but the impact they have on Palestinian society as a whole.

But beyond the message this is a very well acted film with a tight narrative and minimalist direction that creates the intended mood with great power and economy.

Another strong recommendation for the foreign film fans.

Hobo with a Shotgun - This is the movie that Machete should have been. Where Machete tried to evoke 70s exploitation films, HwaS really feels like a 70s film. No CGI blood spatter just cheesy blood packs and plaster of paris or silicone body parts getting shot, hacked and slashed pretty much from beginning to end. One of the bloodiest films I have seen in awhile. Everything is done in an over the top fashion and every bad guy is just about the most extreme caricature of same that you can imagine.

I am not calling this a good film, it's not. It really could never be a good film. However it hit the notes that it was trying to hit and hits them well.

Plus it's got Rutger Hauer killing people with a shotgun. And Rob Wells also has a brief but memorable cameo. What's not to love about that?
I agree with this post, but I still enjoyed Machete more. Maybe Hobo was too gritty for me, or I just liked the great lineup of actors in Machete more.

Watched Young Adult. Wasn't surprised to find it to be a little overrated, given Diablo Cody's involvement, but it was pretty OK I suppose. Good characters and performances from Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. Some funny dialogue, and the premise was good. Not something I'd be eager to watch again though. Quirky and hip. I'd rate it with Juno.
I thought it was pretty good.Theron went all out with the role. Scene after scene, she brought intensity. She was also one of the more authentic alcoholics in recent times.
I thought it was very good. I didn't think it was particularly quirky or hip at all, it was too dark for that imo. It definitely wasn't near the quirkiness or hipness of Juno anyway. I agree with it being a good premise and having some funny dialogue. Also agree that Theron was excellent, and Patton Oswalt surprised me as being solid as well. I really liked the ending as well in how it avoided pretty well every movie cliche. It's definitely not a feel good movie, but my drunk ### enjoyed it.
:goodposting: I really enjoyed it too. Don't get the Juno comparison at all, there was almost nothing quirky or hip about it.
How was this "overrated?" It barely hit the radar at all. I liked it and my Charlize Theron crush was thrown into overdrive again. Been a huge Patton Oswalt fan for years, so it's great to see him get a role like this and drill it. Great acting, decent writing/direction, nothing all that remarkable, just a well-told story of arrested development. With a couple quality cringe-inducing moments.
Surprised anyone liked this. It's horrible.Scene with the sister at the end was preposterous.

Laughs? Shallow and cliche. Oh look a Staples, KFC and Taco Bell. The commercialization of our culture. Genius.

Best part is that it clocked in under 90 minutes.

I liked Juno, Thank You For Smoking and even Up In the Air but this one is a misfire.

The Big Lebowski

I watched the first little bit of this years ago, never returned to it for some reason, even though since then I had heard many times what a great movie this is. So I watched the whole thing last night on Netflix. Not sure why this movie gets the accolades it gets. Aside from a couple interesting characters, this movie did nothing for me. I guess a lot of folks were probably high when they watched it, and of course that made this “movie experience” better, or they watched it at a good time in their lives or something. I just don’t get the love for it. Not one bit.

I know it's the same director but YA was nothing even remotely like Juno, TYFS or UitA. I don't think it was ever supposed to be like those films. If anything it felt like a departure for Reitman. I like those other three films well enough but I thought all of them suffered from Sorkinization where every character is incredibly hip and always has the perfect witty response for every situation. Dialogue is very clever but never flows naturally/plausibly in those films. In YA Theron pretty much never had an answer for anything other than to get drunk and sit idly by while she passively let her life collapse around her. I liked it.

Watch it again. I guarantee it gets better every time. Eventually you're going try a White Russian, and like it, and you'll be walking around saying things like Shut the #### up, Donny! or You wanna toe? I'll get you a toe. and wondering how you ever could have not enjoyed this film.I find that with a lot of Coen Brothers films I am seldom impressed with the first viewing but when I get sucked back in for whatever reason to watch them again I almost always end up enjoying them more. One day I'll revisit A Serious Man, which I did not like on pretty much any level (except the Korean kid, he was hysterical), just because I know that Coen Bros films pretty much always have something worth appreciating that I probably missed the first time through.

If that's all you got out of the movie I can see why you didn't like it. I thought it was a great movie. As far as the sister goes, she was weird but you haven't been to towns like that if you think someone like her doesn't exist.

I'm a fan of movies that are mostly dialogue like this so I enjoyed it. Not a great movie but I enjoyed the interaction even if it was stilted at times. I thought Reilly was great in it and his interaction with Walz was fun to watch, especially the discussion they had about toilets.

I've never watched it high and it's a top 10 movie for me.

The writing, acting and directing were excellent although I must admit that I thought the gaffing and gripping were only average.

When you watch a cult classic roughly 20 years after it was released, you probably aren't going to "get" it.
What was there to "get"?
I can't argue taste. I know I had a similar reaction to Rocky Horror Picture show. I didn't see it at the right time, in the right mood, and I hate it and nobody could convince me otherwise.I'm fine with less people liking Lebowski, the selfish me would like to enjoy it all to himself I think.

The Cottage

When feuding brothers David (Andy Serkis) and Peter (Reece Shearsmith) abduct a young woman (Jennifer Ellison) and hole up in a remote rural cottage, their hostage quickly turns the tables on her captors. But soon, it's all for one when they find that the deranged farmer next door is the real threat. Hellraiser's Doug Bradley makes a cameo in this blood-drenched yet humor-laced terror treat from writer-director Paul Andrew Williams.

Yeah I get the theme of modern culture's emphasis of striving to be "special" whether or not it requires any redemming qualites. And how this can leave you feeling empty because it's an empty goal. The sister's character was like a campy one more suitable to a movie like Election. She was a caricature unlike most of the other main characters. Just thought the whole scene at the kitchen table with the sister was crowbarred in there to put a bow on things.

"Guys like me are born to love girls like you." Weak line that rang hallow.

80+ on rottentomatoes so I'm in the minority here. Although most of the reviews are boners for Theron and those geeked up about Oswalt getting a juicy role while glossing over the movie.

If that scene was putting a bow on things, it was one ugly ### bow. The ending of the movie was the darkest part of the film, that sister scene included.

The Big LebowskiI watched the first little bit of this years ago, never returned to it for some reason, even though since then I had heard many times what a great movie this is.
I'm with you. I don't understand the appeal of this movie at all. Every one of my friends loves it. I think it's a distinctly mediocre movie. Good acting but aside from that? Meh. And it's not from seeing it only once. I've seen this movie literally at least 9 times. I lived in a bachelor pad with 3 guys for a couple years. This was one of the movies they loved. We had a poster of this movie hanging in the living room. It has a couple funny lines but really do not understand the appeal. I do enjoy most Cohen brothers movies but sometimes their work just falls flat for me. This was one of those times. Of course I also hated The Hangover and Anchorman despite the rest of the country thinking they're great so

pretty much the same for me. it's well done but it's still not my cup of tea. it was the first failure on the part of the coen bros, i thought. one thing i thought about the film that was noticeable and distinct from their earlier work was how, well, *mean-spirited* i thought it was. it was a departure and cropped up in some of their other films. they've made terrific films since this but the love affair i had with them was over.

I think it's a personality thing. I've noticed that serious go-getting type-A personalities (and women) don't get the movie. People who can appreciate the simplicity of living life The Dude, even if they don't want to live that way themselves, tend to like it.

Except for telling Donnie to ####, which IMO was just schtick between friends, I don't see this.

I know a few Type As who love it. They also happen to smoke dope. But they're definitely type As
