Prometheus:

Wow, did I not like this movie. Felt the urge to turn it off after the opening sequence, then it gave me a glimmer of hope. Seemed like the writers had something to say, started to set it up, and then got bored and wanted some silly gore and fight scenes. I was 1/2 way on board with it until:

Alien abortion !!!
This ended up being one of the bigger disappointments of the last few years for me as far as movies go.

Speaking of
abortion
I knew a disappointment was coming ever once I found out it was being co-written by the guy who wrote The Darkest Hour.

Battleship

Hey it was free from the library, so what the hell. It was a cliched, schlocky, ridiculous mess with a brain-numbing plot. The characters were unbelievable and the acting was awful. And to top it off they actually tried to tie in parts of it to the #######' board game. Laughable, right?

Loved it. Check your mind at the door and just enjoy the ride.

I rather hated this film. I was terrifically bored by the film for the most part. It was just a jumbled mess with little redeeming value.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I wanted to give this movie another shot. It's pretty much exactly like I remember it: funny, ugly, and often dull.

The good: Thompson's humor shines through sometimes. The bad: Depp's performance is more of a caricature than anything. When Depp's doing Thompson in voiceover, he nails it. But the praying mantis shtick gets old. The ugly: Benicio Del Toro. Drugged out cacaphony is just plain boring in movies. Drugs are always better in real life. So any movie that spends a large chunk of time pretending to trip on drugs gets tiresome. Oh, and there's yet anoth puke scene. You know, the next R rated movie I see without a puke scene gets an automatic extra star bump for originality.

There's a strange, sweet poetry in Hunter S. Thompson's writing. Even when he's describing something dark and twisted, you can hear a wry smile. But Del Toro's character just drags this movie down to something simultanesously terrifying and mundane.
I've seen it a couple of times and find it disappointing. Depp does a pretty good job but it is a caricature - I never once felt like I was watching HST. Benicio's acting is simply over the top and annoying, not at all how I pictured Dr. Gonzo in the book.
I found it insufferable and I am a huge HST fan.mon was in town one evening and I let him pick a movie to watch in my cave and he chose that. I had started it once before and gave up in less than 15 minutes. Being a good host I sat through the whole thing and no amount of spleef and alcohol could make those 100 minutes tolerable
I don't know why directors decided that on-screen drug trips are interesting - even for five minutes. Stretch it out to an entire film, and it's practically unwatchable.
The only effectively filmed drug sequences were van Sant's heroin in Drugstore Cowboy and Scorsese's cocaine in Goodfellas.

Don't get what was so great about it, unless the scenery looked great in 3D so something.

Twice. 3D wasn't worth the price though. It wasn't a perfect movie to be sure but I liked the mood of it. Plus I think the 2nd one will explain a lot more of what went on in the 1st.

Plus I've read that there was stuff left on the cutting room floor that would have really helped explain things. I think it was not the best edited film. I'm looking forward to checking out the deleted scenes on the BluRay.

I liked the core concept of finding our creator. I think the answers or theme were above the level of the writers (hell, maybe for any writer) and thought what they came up with was stupid. It was as though they came to a dead end and said "time for the monsters and #### blowing up!!!" Thought it was AVP-level bad, but I probably had more fun watching AVP b/c I was expecting badness.

You actually didn't like the look of the film? That was it's one major redeeming quality for me. I hate CGI a tonne as well, but I thought this was easily one of the better looking films that used a lot of CGI, and the whole aesthetic of the film was great I thought.

It's the aesthetics that I think redeem the movie a bit.

I thought it was beautifully shot, and there were a couple of scenes that stood out, such as the mapping bugs and when David finds the star map. Some stuff I thought looked bad - the old man makeup and some of the creature stuff. What I was surprised at after watching it is that I didn't think they did a great job creating a world that stood out more than any other sci-fi movie, and maybe that's why I was focused on the crap story. I will use Avatar for an example - another movie where I thought the story was stupid, but it was worth the viewing b/c at least he did a fantastic job of creating a new world that I didn't mind being in for a couple of hours. Maybe I was just too annoyed too quickly with the movie, but I didn't see a lot that would elevate it above it's material.

Moonrise Kingdom: Very enjoyable. Nice easy story and it was something a little different. Thought the kids did a great job. Not quite sure its worthy of the ridiculously high ratings and reviews though. 4/5

Cabin in the Woods - no idea what to expect going in, didn't hear anything about it except that people really loved it. It was ok. After about the first 3 minutes with the banter in the apartment my wife was saying "OMG, I hate this movie already" It turned around as the story got going but I didn't care much for the cabin storyline, preferring the other part of the movie. No real scares, the scenes in the woods were way too dark. There were some good laughs ("am I on speakerphone?" :lmao: ) but overall it wasn't great. The ending was just silly. Sort of fun but not what I was hoping for. 2.5/5

I enjoyed it, its one of my favorite movies. Also, whats with all this Prometheus hate. Tons of hate when it came out. I personally cannot wait for the bluray. Being a giant nerd I wanna see all the extras, they keep showing scenes of Praetorian Xenomorphs in the trailer and it gives me a nerdgasm everytime.

No way.

Sometimes it's all about expectations. I think both had pretty damn stupid writing/plots, but AVP seemed to know what it was more and I thought that movie would be crap. I at least had a little fun with how bad AVP was. Mostly I was mad watching Prometheus and how they managed to squander the talent involved.

In Treatment

Finally got around to watching the final episode of this HBO show starring Gabriel Byrne. Excellent. Highly recommended.

Was there just 2 seasons of this show?Do you (or anybody else here) watch Big Love?
In Treatment lasted three seasons.I couldn't get into Big Love. You?
Haven't seen it. Just seems as though that show has been on for a few seasons, but I don't hear much about it either way. Usually HBO shows get more praise or they get dropped sooner.

Well, I liken True Love to Treme. There's enough good stuff in those shows to merit praise. But I think they're both below average HBO shows. Now, we all know that HBO has a rich history of hour long dramas. So shows like Big Love are likely better than most things on TV. But I can't help but compare them to their vastly superior brethren.

I hear what you are saying. Since they are only 2 seasons I will probably go with Carnivale or Rome soon. I just got my hands on a copy of Season 2 of Game of Thrones, so I will be watching that this week now.

I had seen the Avengers in the theater but rewatched on video last night. Still entertaining the second time through. And I still say Cobie Smulders looked better from behind in her uniform than Scarlett did in hers.

The Snowtown Murders: They did a pretty terrible job of telling what could have been a very good story. It seemed fragmented and just poorly done. Reading the wiki entry for what actually happened made the movie even worse. 1/5

Rome and Carnivale are great in completely different ways. Rome is an outstanding, dramatic, wicked period show that one could argue is the best of its kind. Carnivale is so odd, dark, and amazing, it just baffles me that anyone would ever allow this show on television. Carnivale gets a little hoaky towards the end, but I can't say enough good things about it. Love that show.

Mildred Pierce - y'all were pretty rough on this when it came out and i can only figure that it's lost on folks too young to understand how momentous it was for a woman to build a destiny for herself & others back then. Film buffs should appreciate it alone as a culmination of what Todd Haynes has been trying to achieve his entire career. Not since Sweeney Todd (my favorite film of the century) has an original story found its perfect director like this bit of kismet. Clean as soap, by two masters of the genre. Sliiiightly ahead of "Win Win" as the best thing i've seen in the last yr. 4.7/5

I am so with you on Win Win. Fantastic. I found it fascinating that the mother in that movie is supposed to be the antagonist. And yet, the movie makes it clear that she is a victim of terrible parenting - just like her son.

Terminator 2 was on last night. How fricken phenominal was that movie? Sure, she couldn't manually load a shotgun with one hand repeatedly, and the kid wasn't a great actor, but seriously. Who cares? This may have been the pinnacle of Arnold's career.

Has anyone seen the movie Glory? Is this worth watching? TIA.
Perfect 10 movie, IMO.Great soundtrack too.
Remember seeing it in the theater. When the credits rolled everyone in a packed theater just sat there taking it in for a bit.Definetly a movie I'd go see in the theaters again if they ever re-released it. Only a 7.9 on imdb is odd.
probably from the 4.5s from people like me who HATE it when a modern movie pumps the nobility for cinematic effect. history, honor, wonder over what men are capable of when they put life on the line for something they believe - that's not enough?! there was more corn on that beach than sand, ruining a wonderfully performed film.

Top 5 movie of all time for me and greatest action movie ever.

I was thinking of starting this but I know it was canceled early. Does it have an ending or does it leave a lot unresolved?

I think it has a very good ending (if you ignore the last 5 seconds, even if you don't it's still a good ending).
