Man, I can't believe how many good screeners have leaked in the past week. Too bad football takes priority. I have a hell of a queue right now.

Holy Motors - Uhm...what? Still not completely sure what I watched. I didn't like it. I didn't dislike it, either. I wanted to turn it off after a few minutes but was fascinated with figuring out what was going on and watching him transform. Next thing I knew the movie was coming to an end. No way in hell would I ever recommend this movie to most folks but I can't say I'm sad I watched it. Really not sure what to make of it. To say it's an odd film is an understatement.
I just watched Holy motors trailer, omg that is the creepiest/weirdest trailer I have ever seen. Zero chance I would ever watch this movie
I got the exact opposite effect. Can't wait to check it out in about a half hr.
Thought this movie was really good. Not that I really "got it"... but it was an interesting watch.
I LOVED the first musical number that came out of nowhere, with the accordians... bad-###. The second one was horrible and I skipped all the way through it. The talking limos at the end made no sense.

The musical number was pretty great. If they had really embraced the weird and no sense direction of the movie and had done more in that vein I would have loved it. Still, too many scenes simply made no sense or were outright stupid. And if they're really going to go the no sense route I felt they could have made some scenes even weirder/more artistic. Heck, I would have taken an entire movie of the musical and the flower eater guy.

:goodposting:
I completely agree with everything you said; I loved the crazy leprechaun scene, loved the accordian scene, really hated the Kylie Minogue musical scene and the limo talking at the end, and was interested enough with everything else. Though since all the scenes I didn't like came near the end, it kind of left a bad taste in the mouth, so to speak.
So overall I liked it and would definitely say it makes for an interesting watch, albeit with some considerable flaws, imo.

Agreed. They totally should've gone even more to the weird/dark side with it.

Is there anything similar about the appointments that anyone noticed? I'm kinda trying to make some sense out of what the limo people were. A metaphor for some kind of esoteric angel type beings that interject themselves into our lives is the only thing I can really come up with.

But yea, worth the watch for alone for the accordian scene. Watched it like 3 times when it happened and then another 2 or 3 after it was done and am about to peep it again... awesome jam!

Watched SearcHing for Sugar Man, such an amazing documentary. If you don't know the story, do not read anything about this doc trust me you don't want to get spoiled about anything, its an absolute treat to watch this with little info coming in
Hey... thanks for the reminder on this one. Saw it mentioned in the documentary thread but forgot about it. GREAT film. Inspirational, yet sad... so many emotions. Thank you.

I figured he was an actor hired by eccentric millionaires tired of the theater to play out various lives. There are cameras scattered throughout the city and a few dozen of these actors to entertain the audience.

Jack Reacher

I actually thought this might be good. Man was I wrong. Embarrassing for the most part for Cruise, Duvall and Jenkins. Just a complete waste of time. Felt like I was watching one of those Freeman/Judd crime movies. Those were even a lot better then this.

No reason to watch this.
couldn't disagree morewife and i very entertained the whole time. thought it was well done. doesn't try too hard and the dialogue is quality.

I thought the same. Nothing extraordinary (besides the opening scene which was done really well), but overall it was an above average action/crime film. And Rosamund Pike's cleavage was magnificent in a starring role.

Reacher can't acquire a gun to bring to the showdown?

Duvall brings him a knife?

Was Duvall intentionally just shooting off warning shots?

Pike's life is at stake and Cruise decides to lay down his gun to go hand to hand with the bad guy?

I zoned out early on this one. Right around when Cruise escaped on a city bus while being surrounded by 100 cops staring at his empty getaway car. The random guy at the bus stop helping him was another great touch.

Also when the two guys jumped Cruise in the bathroom and were bumping into each other like the three stooges trying to get at him. It went on and on like a bad comedy.

This movie sucked.

Yeah the bathroom scene was really dumb, no argument there. The final showdown scene was pretty silly too, but it was pretty standard action film fare I thought. What I thought Jack Reacher did better than the average action film was the unravelling of the mysteries which is what really kept me interested. The Werner Herzog character was also a really good villain I thought, would have been nice if they spent more time on developing that character.

Zero Dark Thirty

I liked it and would recommend but the whole film is built around a fictional, overly-Hollywood tough chick lead character that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Better than Hurt Locker, at least it wasn't complete tripe

I thought Chastain's character was not fictional at all.

Based off a real woman but maybe not a dainty-goddess like Chastain. Haven't seen it yet to see if Chastain pulls it off.

48 Hrs.

Somehow had never seen this one. Big fan of Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. Most of Eddie's stuff pre-1990. Had heard 48 Hrs. was one of Eddie's best.

I don't get why this one is held in such high regard. I was laughing at a lot of the lines but problem was their is barely any lines. Eddie doesn't appear until nearly 30 minutes in. Lots of gunfights and chasing around. Just not a lot of dialogue.

The redneck bar scene was good but I was expecting a bit more.

Shame

Starring Michael Fassbender's ####, this well-crafted, pointless movie portrays a man obsessed with sex. Don't waste your time.
Yeah was expecting a bit more. The dialogue was mediocre at best. Nothing clever going on.
No one to care about, barely any plot.
I certainly could have done without the full rendition of New York, New York by Carey Mulligan and all the Fassbender schlong, in that order.
If brother and sister had knocked boots, the stupid song would have been forgivable.

I wrote this back when I saw it- but if you're at the end of your rope... ie: resorting to cruising chelsea sex clubs for same-sex encounters to highlight your despair... but still have the three-way with a couple of hot girls sitting in your pocket- then your movie makes no sense.
Furthermore, I don't think gay people would be thrilled that a same sex encounter is seen as rock bottom.

Beasts of Southern Wild

Definetly in my top 5 of 2012.

Beautiful and entertaining. More then that the production is a marvel. That someone conjured up this world on screen and got many of these performances from people off the street is mighty impressive.

8/10

Crazy, Stupid, Love:

Watched this one again, and still really like it - although maybe not quite as much as the first viewing. I think it tries a little too hard with the merging story lines at the end, and the teenage son bothers the piss out of me. Still think Gosling and Carrell nail these parts.
Saw this with the wife last night. Sort of a chick flick but a watchable one, might be one of my favorite date-type movies. The son is downright annoying. The rest of the group was really good.

I've seen mixed reports on how fictional she was ("Jen" in real life), but I suspect more fiction than fact. This character was clearly their license to style the whole story up. Not a dainty goddess here, maybe tries too hard to go the other way. At least she doesn't go completely off the reservation like Renner in Hurt Locker. It was a pretty engrossing film, in any case. Moves along nicely and ends with a dead Osama.ETA: I haven't kept up with Homeland but I think maybe the character was based more on that character than any "Jen". Don't worry though, no romantic entanglements here.

Dinosaur Project - 3/5

There aren't many decent dinosaur movies. This one's not bad. The dinos don't get a lot of screen time but they are surprisingly well done. The acting and script leave a lot to be desired and stay away if you don't like the found footage, shaky cam effect. Despite the flaws I thought it was a fun movie.

It's been a lot time since I've seen it but the scenes with Murphy/Nolte are so great that it makes up for a lot.

I found myself caring about the little girl. Not really any other likeable characters although the dad was tremendous and I hope he doesn't get forgotten come awards season.

Man, I can't believe how many good screeners have leaked in the past week. Too bad football takes priority. I have a hell of a queue right now.
Care to list them? Also, are screeners of good enough quality that it's not worth waiting for bluray rips?
Screeners are basically DVD quality, sometimes a bit less. But they are good enough to watch the film without being annoyed at all about the quality not being Blu Ray.In the last week the following screeners have been released all in solid DVD like quality:DjangoZero Dark ThirtyThe HobbitFlightThe Impossible Argo (worst quality of the bunch, not sure it was a screener but a web rip with chinese subtitles hard coded)

:no:Most of the time you're going to get VHS quality which looks terrible on a big screen. The odd one will be DVD quality. Maybe they've gotten better recently but they were bad enough that I quit even trying them.

Are there still distracting watermarks on screeners?

Yeah pretty much EVERYTHING has been leaked in the past ten days, I grabbed them off a private torrent site and stopped seeding pretty quickly. It's almost fishy.

The quality is adequate and the watermarks are pretty mild, some versions will have them blurred out.

Thinking about waiting for higher quality to watch The Hobbit, but for a lot of these it's fine. For ZD30 I'll say I could have used better quality for the actual nighttime assault.

ZD30, that's mine by the way.

There was a Django Unchained release that's a straight rip of the VOB's. You have to convert it to an ISO (I used ImgBurn) but it's nearly perfect. I didn't bother with the Hobbit one since I'm forcing myself not to watch it yet. There's only a few top movies that haven't leaked yet: Life of Pi, Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook, Wreck It Ralph, Seven Psychopaths, The Master, Rise of the Guardians.BTW JZilla, are you on TL?

Saw life of Pi this week. Great movie. Gave me some appreciation of Indian culture - make no mistake, this is an Indian movie. In any case, great storytelling. Beautiful movie. My kids loved it, they're 12 & 10. Says a lot of good things about appreciation of other religions as well. There are a lot of good moral lessons to take from it.

My daughter says 8.5/10.

Oscar season. Screeners get sent out to a ton of people.

I watched End of Watch on the recommendations of this board. I was left with really mixed feelings on the movie. I felt like the leads had a real chemistry to them, and really seemed to portray cops accurately. On the other hand - what was the story? It came off to me as a series of episodes of Cops - which I like, but don't constitute a film. There was relatively little to really bring me in - beyond the cop/buddy movie stuff. Which was great. But the script really felt like it lacked cohesion. Also:

How the hell did Jake Gyllenhall survive the shooting? Not only did he get shot, his partner was shot about 50 times, and it appeared the bullets hit Gyllenhall as well. Really messed up the ending for me.
All in all, it was passable, but a lot of pointless, disconnected scenes. 6/10.

that bothered me too. Felt like they pulled punches there.

This. Guess everyone's emboldened with the new "blur out your name on the screener" shtick.I liked ZDT, more or less. Jessica Chastain's character is a bit of a cowboy, don't know how realistic that is.

Last year very few screeners leaked early.

Was Chastain's performance Oscar worthy?

God, noMaybe Emmy worthy

Right now out of Lincoln, Django, and ZD30, I'd say I liked ZD30 the best but I'd give best picture to Lincoln

I'm not gonna watch Argo until a better version comes out, in its case. That Chinese looks pretty obnoxious. I suspect I'll be mildly disappointed like I was with the last couple hyped up Affleck joints.

End of Watch was good but not THAT good. Life of Pi I saw in the theater, and as with Avatar I'm glad I was able to enjoy those effects because otherwise it would have been a complete waste.

Dune

Watched the last 10 minutes last night. Haven't seen this in like 20 years. Holy balls what a mess. Who decided to let David Lynch direct a science fiction film?

The Moderns

I enjoyed this movie when I saw it back in the late 80s. But it hasn't held up well at all. Similar material done much better in movies like Midnight in Paris.

 :lmao: Awesome

I was off almost the whole time between Christmas and New Years (and then some). My daughter came to visit. Her mom and I divorced years ago and she was with me these past couple weeks. She is really into movies so I saw the following:

Pride & Prejudice 1995 BBC 6 part series

Pride & Prejudice 2005 version

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (directors cut)

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

The Princess Diaries

Wreck It Ralph

Howl's Moving Castle

I needed my daughter to 'interpret' for me during the Pride & Prejudice movies, as well as the Lord of the Rings series. I am by no means 'cultured' and needed help keeping up with the plot and just knowing what the heck is going on. I am pretty terrible at reviews and I don't know what to say except I liked them all. Victorian era and fantasy are definitely not in my wheelhouse, but they were good movies.

I guess the one thing I can comment on was Howl's Moving Castle. It was my first introduction to Japanese Anime movies and I liked it a lot. Very interesting to see how different a Japanese movie is. I may be dipping my toe into more anime waters from this point on.
