"the lookout" with joseph gordon-levitt. i added this to my netflix queue many months ago. i liked the noir style of "brick" and hoped this was of the same mold. it's not. it's kind of run-of-the-mill crime caper, in fact. JGL doesn't get much to work with here. kind of disappointed. isla fisher was nice eye candy.
Felt this movie was kind-of so-so. It didn't really grab me. I think I just didn't like JGL's character as much as I was supposed to. I really didn't care what happened to him. I was more upset by Deputy Donut than anything that happened with JGL.

I loved Boogie Nights and enjoyed Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia very much. I found There Will Be Blood to be inaccessible at best and self indulgent at worst but DDL is so good that it made up for a lot of the problems I had with it.
Before reading your post and thinking about the responses here for The Master (which I have yet to see), I was going to say I feel like PTA has become increasingly self indulgent. How much I like his movies goes directly in order of release. Hard Eight is my favorite, and I love Boogie Nights as well. I liked Magnolia quite a bit but its where the self indulgence starts to show. Punch Drunk Love was pretty good for what it was, but I have no interest in seeing it again. TWBB has aspects that are no doubt excellent (DDL, cinematography, direction) and thought it was well done overall but Im not sure how much I really enjoyed it aside from DDL and the self indulgence (see 20 minute opening sequence for starters) was part of the reason why. I also have no interest in ever seeing TWBB again. The Master looks like more of the same, but if anything I think I'll still come away thinking it was worth the 1 watch for Phoenix and PSH.

I really liked this one  I wouldnt call it great or anything, but I thought JGL was good, and his character going from a high school sports star to a socially awkward amnesiac janitor was interesting and made this different. IIRC, the dialogue as well as Jeff Daniels were also good.

Tried rewatching The Master again yesterday. Fell asleep again.

Dark of the Sun

Rod Taylor (in perhaps one of his his best roles) leds a band of mercenaries through the Congo to retrieve $25 million in uncut diamonds. Was ground-breaking for the amount of violence shown. Solid flick 7/10

Wreck-It Ralph - Watched it with my daughter last night. Very Very good. It seems like Disney and Pixar switched souls last year. This seemed more like a Pixar than Disney movie.

Many laughs, but the Or-e-o joke had the both of us :lmao:

Seeing a bad ### double feature tonight: Robocop and Starship Troopers.

I'm not commenting on the possibility of weed consumption beforehand, but the odds are 100%.

The perfect 80's double Sci-fi feature for me would be Robocop and The Running Man.
I find that The Running Man doesn't hold up very well.
I don't think it held up when it was new. Starship Troopers & Robocop OTOH = Pure Platinum.

Playing for Keeps - Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, etc. Washed up pro soccer player blah, blah blah

Wife rented it, roped me into watching it with her. I actively can't stand this movie. It's just awful. I thought Jessica Biel could make it ok, but I was sadly mistaken. If this ever comes across your TV, run.

Great seeing some old favorites on the big screen.

That was my take as well. Wreck It Ralph seemed way too fresh and funny to be a Disney movie, and on the other hand Brave seemed to be just like every other Disney princess movie and didn't feel like a Pixar movie. I really enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph.

Another movie I didn't think I'd like as much as I did:

Here Comes the Boom:

You could do a lot worse for a family/PG movie. Would recommend it to the parents with boys in the 10yr old range or so? Little bit of MMA violence, but overall had some good laughs between Kevin James (can't believe I just typed that) and Winkler. Also had some heart and a good message too. Ended up having a bit of fun with this one.

That would be an amazing double feature to see - very jealous theaters around here don't do #### like this.

Looper - I really tried hard to like it. It was ok. That Gordon Lewis Davis Levitt guy is always good but I think his lowkey style didn't really fit with the character. It got silly towards the end but overall ended great. Can't recommend but worth sitting though if it's on. 2.5/5

Argo - 7.5/10 - would have been better if I didn't know the outcome. I thought the movie did a good job setting the tone of how much the Iranians hated us. That must have been scary as hell being in that embassy.

Zero Dark Thirty - 7.5/10 - another solid history hijack flick. I think they could have done a better job selecting actors. The CIA dude didn't come off too intimidating during tortures and the girl was boring as hell. Pretty predictable as well, and I'm not just talking about what we knew already. Also liked seeing all the modern military gear. It was like RL CoD. Also, thought the ending was missing the most important part. Don't wanna spoil it, but those who watched know what I am getting at.

This passed Crash as the most over-rated Best Picture Oscar.

Argo is approximately a googleplex times better than Crash
Yes.
The mere mention of Crash makes me angry. I have no idea how any film fan could consider that spank rag of a film anywhere remotely worthy of a comparison with Argo.

:goodposting: And they killed Bin Laden in the version I saw, so I'm not sure what this most important thing is that's missing from the end.

Dumping his body in the water. I guess that wasn't a spoiler seeing as everyone knew what happened.I think that was an important part seeing as it was so controversial. I wonder if any of the people involved were aware what they planned to do with the body, and if any had objections.

Coriolanus - Swing and a miss. There is a reason I prefer to read Shakespeare rather than see his plays performed and that is because, unless it is a regular part of your life, the poetic dialogue is all but incomprehensible unless you have time to sit down and digest it. Cramming a ton of iambic pentameter into a semi-fast paced war film serves little purpose but to make it inaccessible and ultimately boring. It took me a good 1/2-2/3 of the film before I had adjusted enough to the dialogue to really start to pick up the nuance of the exchanges and at that point I wasn't about to rewind the whole thing and start over.

However I must acknowledge that despite the fact that I followed only about half of what was spoken Ralph Fiennes is a freaking tremendous actor. After this I am convinced that he could stand up and read the phone book for ten hours and I would be riveted. A couple of the other actors did well with the dialogue, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave, but Fiennes was the only one who was truly convincing in his delivery...even if I wasn't always sure what he was delivering  Does that make sense?
Did you have subtitles on? I did and loved the movie.
Yep, I enjoyed it as well. I give it a 7.5/10.These movies should definitely be watched with subtitles on. Heck, I watch movies like Layer Cake and Snatch with subtitles on. It's English, but it's not MY English.

Because I think Argo is a piece of trash. Might as well have given 300 the Oscar.

It was a FoxNews manufactured controversy. Didn't take flight.

So, thanks to Apple TV and HBO GO, I'm finally getting around to watching The Wire.I'm 10 eps into the first season....started watching an ep a night....now I'm so addicted its been 5 in the last 2 nights. Great show obviously.I know every season is a different aspect of the Baltimore criminal or political landscape....what seasons are generally considered the best?
4,3,1,2 then 5.
5 is the press season, right? Still good, just the worst of 5 great ones....or clearly the worst?
Hippling here. I think 5 is pretty easily the worst, but compared to most everything else on TV, it's still pretty great. And you get the finale. At no point did I ever consider watching s5 wasted time at all.

:thumbup:Just watched S2 last week. Looking forward to 3 this week.

Watching each season of The Wire for the first time is like having a baby and cherishing its first few xmas' ....enjoy it while you can, and you will certainly be back to watch it again.

I'm surprised at your comments. I thought the CIA dude was appropriately cast. I think we assume these interrogators are huge macho dudes, but I'll guess many of them have masters degrees.

I think I mentioned it here before but my biggest problem with Zero Dark was Jessica Chastain. I don't think she's a bad actress and I think she did a serviceable job but there was something about her that fell flat. I'm not sure what it was but she just wasn't compelling or very interesting. I would have rather have seen Jennifer Ehle play the lead.

Is this true? People actually went on TV and whined about how his body was handled? Those people deserve to be claw hammered. Enough already.

Agreed. Just watched this and she was pretty uninteresting. She barely had any dialogue in the first 20 minutes of the movie while someone else did all the work. Then she just kind of stared at computers while a bunch of stuff happened around her. Then she had two big scenes, but she mostly hung back and only had a few lines in them. Then she didn't have any dialog for the last 30 minutes of the movie while a bunch of other people did all the work. Then she nodded without saying anything in her biggest moment. Then she cried. The end.
