Wow, Stir of Echoes sucked. I think I put it on and bumped it up my queue because of this thread.

What did you think of Sixth Sense? They both were released the same year, and I thought Stir of Echoes was the much better film. I can see how maybe you were disappointed, but to think Stir of Echoes sucked? Im not seeing it. Its an above average supernatural thriller, especially based on whats considered average these days. It has solid acting, plenty of tension, and a twist or two that I dont see how anyone can really determine beforehand. I cant say the same about Sixth Sense, or many others in this genre.

I'm a Kevin Bacon fan but I thought that was a pretty generic film. His acting has improved a lot since then. I don't know how you can compare it to The Sixth Sense which at least had a deep thread throughout it. This was nothing special. Maybe when it came out it was.

The fact that both of those movies were released in 1999 makes me feel ancient. So thanks for that. Stir of echoes is a good film and entertaining IMO. Sixth sense is both entertaining and "new". We take it for granted now that everything has to have a twist, but usual suspects and sixth sense paved the way for that kind of thing. M night shamalamadingdong is still making movies off the glory of that one.

I didn't think there was that much of a twist here but I'll admit to finding out the twist in the Sixth Sense at the exact point I was supposed to. Right when Bruce Willis found out. I don't try to find the twist in movies and love when it hits me like the Sixth Sense did, This one wasn't much of a surprise.

Well, I guess twist is a word to use loosely, because certainly there are different types. And a surprising twist like you claim with Sixth Sense makes you think its a better film, or at least it does to me when that happens. Now that I think about it, maybe Stir of Echoes isnt really a twist, but more of a unraveling of the past, memories, etc. In that sense, I thought they unraveled it great. Like I said, I can understand if you didnt love it, but to say it sucked I have a hard time agreeing with.

The Way, Way Back.

Charming cast. Rockwell, Janney and Collette are always superb and they are. Carrell is terrific in a different role for him. But overall the pic is more of a swing and a miss. The tone is a bit off because it's very understated at parts and very silly at others. First 20 minutes were really good and you just wanted this one to be better then it ended up being.

If you like the cast it's worth watching otherwise nothing to rave about.

Two films I watched this weekend:

Devil - This was a lot better than I expected. Sure it's an Agatha Christie rip-off but at least it held my interest throughout, unlike nearly everything M. Night Shyamalan has been involved with since "Signs." I kind of had the old women pegged as being the devil when they got on the elevator but it still was a nice twist at the end. The survivor being the guy who killed Chris Messina's family felt a little tidy at the end but again I enjoyed the film and it kept my interest.

Magic Mike - I've had no interest in watching a movie about male strippers but could not find anything else to watch last night so I figured what the hell. This wasn't a bad film. Cody Horn was pretty bad in her role but the rest of the cast did well. Soderbergh's yellow tint approach was tiresome but Channing Tatum did a good job in the lead role. More topless scenes from Olivia Munn would've been nice but overall this was an enjoyable film and better than I thought it would be.

I liked it. It was much better than the first one and basically what I wouldve expected the first one to be. No Marlon Wayans is addition by subtraction, and they get rid of all the crazy futuristic weapons, technology, etc. The Rock was born to play Roadblock.

A Good Day to Die Hard - Watched this last night. Holy crap. This was absolutely horrible. I mean - ridiculously terrible.

The writer's must have thought having Bruce Willis saying "I'm on vacation" was a real hoot. Think he used that line about 15 times.

The movie was beyond terrible - even as just an action movie.

And not one but TWO helicopter attacks. Awful, awful movie.

Does not even fit in the "so bad it's good" or "guilty pleasure" category.

so since I thought #4 was terrible, I should avoid this like the plague?

Unquestionably as I thought the 4th was actually pretty entertaining and fun. This one is neither of those.

Seriously. Don't waste your time.

I didn't think it was very good but I thought it was better than the fourth film.

I started it up with the wife, but she wasn't into it. We do the majority of our TV watching together, so I just got lazy to watch it on my own. But I am finishing it tonight and am reallly glad about that.

Just saw Mud. Really solid flick and a really strong performance by Mcconneghey who is really starting to deliver great performances lately. Only problem for me was that the main kid actor, Ellis wasnt a magnetic presence. usually kids picked in these starring roles are must see's such as Quavenzhenanana Wallis and the kids from Stand By Me. IMO the other kid, Neckbone was a superior actor and I would have liked to see him play the role of Ellis.

Reese Witherspoon was pretty hot in here in her few scenes, though I thought she could have been given some more dialogue.

About the ending, I was unsure of exactly who found Mud, was it the sniper dude or Neckbone's uncle? Also who was that dude sleeping in the boat, and what significance was that?

I also felt that the dad of the man killed was being set up as this big villain, and there was no payoff for that setup, other then him receiving a phone call of another lost son.

Pretty surprised this is only a 6.3 on IMDB since I really liked it - at least a 7.5 for me. Starring Josh Duhamel (from Las Vegas) and Dan Fogler (fat slob guy in movies like Fanboys), it's a psychological survival story with a lot of dialogue. If that's the type of movie you like then you'll dig it.

I've seen this compared to Gerry but I thought that was boring and one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Scenic Route takes the good parts of Gerry and turns it into something that is mind-provoking and engaging to watch.

Woody was great in Rampart, but IIRC I had numerous other problems with it, mainly with the storyline. Pretty sure I did a review in here on it. Burt Wonderstone looks like poop. I know people who thought it looked hilarious based on the previews, but it looks awful to me and Im not even going to give it a shot.

Olympus Has Fallen...Do yourself a favor and ignore the plot. It is not believable, isnt worth trying to believe, and will likely frustrate you in doing so. That said, it has some good action and shootout scenes, which is what I hoped/expected from Fuqua with this. Nice to see Gerard Butler play a character different from most of his that seem like if he got his eggs over hard instead of over medium for breakfast it would lead to him being ####ed off the rest of the day and someone suffering the consequences. I liked Butler here, but it wouldve been nice/smart to give Morgan Freeman more screentime. If youre in the mood for a mindless action flick, this is good for that...2.5/5

Stay...Ewan McGregor plays a psychiatrist trying to prevent his patient (played by Ryan Gosling) from committing suicide. The storyline was interesting but also a little confusing, however the ending clears much of that up. I feel like the first couple acts couldve used more attention to detail, and that the director is just hoping the ending makes you forget that, but Id actually like to watch this again keeping the ending in mind, and see how I feel then. Good direction and cinematography though. Gosling didnt quite steal the show like I feel he typically does, but was solid. Unlike the movie above, this one makes you think, if nothing else..3.2/5

Finally got around to watching The Squid and the Whale. Solid performances all around, great dialogue, slow moving but never felt boring. It's hard to like a movie where most of the cast has very few redeeming values and there isn't much of a story arc but this was well done. 3/5

I can see how many wouldn't like it, but I thought Woody did a great job playing (minor spoiler to follow)

Off topic since I never watched Rampart, but this movie has been an ongoing joke for a few years on reddit since Woody gave an absolute abomination of an IAMA trying to promote this movie.

The Paperboy...There is solid acting here, but ultimately, all of the characters are unlikeable and the storyline is all over the place. Really Efron, Kidman, McConaghey, and especially John Cusack have strong performances here, but that wasnt enough for me to say I liked this. It also had very good cinematography and kept the vintage feel, but that wasnt quite enough for me. Its almost like the director wants you to dislike the characters. While the actors hold their own and it has its positives, overall this movie is like Efron's character - unsure of itself and what it should do next...2/5
