The Master

The people who made this movie should be drown in a puddle of AIDS.
I'm amazed that some people still like the depressing garbage from this director.
I'm still amazed anyone would hire Joaquin Phoenix after I'm Still Here
still think PTA is one of the most talented directors working today.

still haven't seen Lincoln, so Phoenix gets my vote for best acting performance I saw last year.

slightly missed the mark overall for me, but still had the look and feel of a PTA movie.

Anybody seen Kick A.S.S. 2?
It's not a compete trainwreck but I thought it missed the mark.
I'm probably going to grab this off Amazon and watch it today. I really liked the first one and thought Hit Girl really stole that movie. I'm a little apprehensive of Jim Carrey only because I think he is a huge dooshnozzle.
it was just ok. carrey is hardly in the movie. problem is, they also seemed to push hit girl to the sidelines too.

Picked up the Marshall's from red box.

4.5/5. Might be the best movie of it's genre this year.

I know it's been mentioned in this thread before but Felon with Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff is very good I highly recommend it.

I really like Kilmer as an actor. I personally don't care that he gained weight and I thought he might still be more in demand. I know he is no where near the level of Marlon Brando but Brando was able to still get nice roles after he got heavy. Any other of his more recent films that anyone might recommend?

Elysium wasn't horrible. Not saying I'd recommend it but I got through it. Matt Damon picks some weird movies. He's usually good in them so what do I know. This one reminded me what would happen if you split up Republicans and Democrats. It clearly showed the results of Obamacare, on both the rich and poor. I was surprised that it had an easily penetrable atmosphere. I thought for sure there would be a protective layer. Hardly worth the effort it must have taken to do that. Especially since it severely weakens your defenses. And no need for Jodie Foster to do an English accent. Horrible job.

Matt Damon!

2.5/5

Anchorman 2

A little too long. The first half is laugh out loud funny. It slowly unravels in the second half going from funny to awkward and forced. Some of the scenes with Meagan Good where just...odd. Despite the flaws, it was still one of the funniest movies I saw this year.

Carrey was actually good in this.

Probably just a movie for those that liked the first one. I wouldn't recommend it as a stand-alone, or to anyone that didn't like the first one.

We can do it in here, might as well keep dvd discussions to this thread for easy reference. I hardly see movies in theaters, so that is why I personally look at the lists for dvd releases of the year. This has been a slower year for watching new movies for me - probably got hooked on too many TV series and movies took a backseat. Anyway, here is my list:

1. Before Midnight - As much as it caught me off guard, I still really loved catching up with these characters 9 years later. Don't think another movie stuck with me so much.

2. Zero Dark Thiry - I thought Hurt Locker was silly and overrated, and this would evoke the opposite reaction from me. Thought it should have won best picture last year.

3. The Place Beyond the Pines - The 1/3 half fell off a little bit, mostly because of one character, but the 1st 2/3s were more than enough to make up for it.

4. The Way Way Back - Something just clicked with me and this movie. Nothing above and beyond, but had some great characters and unlike a lot of other comedies I saw this year, didn't just rely on the raunch and language.

5. Side Effects - Completely surprised me, and I am sure that adds to the ranking. Have not revisited it since I watched it, but it was not anything like I thought it was going to be. I was expecting Contagion for the drug companies.

The next 5 are more interchangable:

6. Disconnect - was what Crash was trying to be

7. Mud - didn't love the endinging, but a damn good movie

8. The Sessions - very real and frank look at sex and relationships. Hawkes was great.

9. The East - so far I love everything that Marling has been involved with

10. Ain't Them Bodies Saints - beautifully shot movie - hit that Malick spot for me that his own movie could not.

Just for the sake of disclosure, here are some movies that I didn't get to this year that could sqeeze into the list. I am going to try to catch up with a bunch during my slow January:

Intouchables

Rust & Bone

Lincoln

The Gatekeepers

Prisoners

A Hijacking

The Impossible

Imposter

Company You Keep

Don Jon

It's not like me to be all positive, so here is a quick list of the movies I was the most disappointed in this year. They are all ones that I had interest in seeing and had decent expectations for but for the most part didn't like that much:

Django Unchained

Warm Bodies

Trance

Room 237

The Heat

Evil Dead

World War Z

Only God Fogives

Elysium

To the Wonder

For the most part I am getting good at avoiding movies that I think I won't like, but here are a few that I would have on my movies I hated list:

The Bachelorette

Lords of Salem

Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Oz The Great and Powerful

Identity Thief

The Hobbit

American Hustle

I know this received some bad reviews, but I don't get it. Thoroughly enjoyable movie from start to finish.

Broken City

Perfunctory political thriller with Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg. Not bad.

Our Idiot Brother

An uneven movie, but it had its moments.

Hitchcock - 7/10

I liked the movie just fine. It had a "My Week With Marilyn" vibe about it.

Strangely, I didn't much care for Hopkins' performance as Hitch. Don't know who they could have gotten to play him though. Helen Mirren was great, as usual.

Had a great one-liner at the end between Hitch and Alma.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Can see why this one has gotten a wide range of reviews. It doesn't have a lot of character development and is a bit silly at times but I enjoyed the ride. Would wait for rental though.

6/10

Reality Bites, Cable Guy, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder and now Mitty. Those are all the movies Stiller has directed. Think all of them succeed at what they were going for. Think the 2nd half of his career has huge potential directorial-wise.

Interesting way to put it, and Id have to agree. Really like Cable Guy & Zoolander. Reality Bites and Thunder were entertaining at worst to me (I know there are a few in here who have a disdain for RB). However like you said, I think they all achieve based on premise and execution of it.

American Hustle

Leaving the performances out of it, did the story really grab you? Just curious as to why. The "con" didn't seem to have any pop, the music (while good) was all over the place and dropped in at weird moments, and it never really seemed like they knew what they wanted to do with ABSCAM (which was a really freaking big deal).

Not trying to convince you that it was bad more than hoping that you can point out why it was good.

Thanks

Saw Lone Survivor- thought it would be an emotionally draining movie since its based on a real life military tragedy, but this movie just didnt have the emotional punch that it was looking for. Felt like a simple military action movie that was decent but far from spectacular.

Just heard about this movie the other day. Seems to be getting good reviews. Based on/true stories always are interesting, but Im most interest because Peter Berg wrote/directed it and the 4 main/military leads are Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch & Taylor Kitsch. All of that seems like a winning combination.

Really wanted to like it, but was like a 6/10 for me. Not bad or anything but just pretty formulaic.

Just saw Out of the Furnace with Christian Bale. One of the most disappointing movies I have seen in a while. Was expecting a solid movie, it started out decently but this was pretty much garbage from the middle of the movie until the end.

Wasted potential for what could have been a really good movie.

I am honestly not sure what about Hirsch, Foster and especially Kitsch is winning.

I liked Bale a lot. I liked the protagonist's relationship. Loved how dumb Lawrence's character was. Liked the editing and script. It's not so much that the con was unique, it's that most the actors really nailed their parts.

Available on Netflix streaming. Outstanding, smart BBC drama starring Bill Nighy and Rachel Weisz. Intelligent and adult, highly recommended for fans of British drama.

I think Foster is always really good, if not better. Maybe its just the roles, but Hirsch has also consistently impressed me (though has fallen off the map the last few years it seems). I thought Kitsch was a joke but he impressed me in Savages, so while he is the lowest on this totem pole, I think its still a solid collection of actors.

It had a "realness" about it that I appreciated. Not a great movie, but held my interest action wise. Nice pacing and editing.

Thought Foster was the only standout acting wise. The rest were just kind of there.

Not a lot of rewatchability, but worth renting for sure.

Yeah, definitely not boring or anything, but this movie had potential to be special. Walberg was pretty bleh here, brought nothing to the role.

The Wolf of Wall Street

An hour in I was thinking this is fantastic and was wondering why the buzz on this was a bit tepid. Two hours later I understood. It was kind of one-note. A hilarious note but was not enough to carry three hours. Leo's peformance was magnetic but not humanized enough. I came away thinking more about Jonah Hill's risky performance which he thoroughly pulled off. Hill continues to surprise.

Overall it left me a bit cold. Didn't really care about the characters nor how it would resolve. But it was a spectacle. Had me cracking up most of the film but with the three-hour runtime a lot of the energy was lost. Cut 30 minutes and I think the audience walks out exhilarated.

7/10

American Hustle

Bale really becomes his character in this. Superb. Never been an A. Adams fan but she jumps off the screen in this as well. Renner and Lawrence not so much. They both seemed a bit "young" for their characters.

Leo in WOWS and Bale here are both despicable characters. But unlike Leo in WOWS, I cared about Bale's character and where he was headed.

Overall, home run performances from Bale and Adams in an entertaining flick.

Had a busy week with movies.

Anchorman 2- stupid funny. Some laugh out loud moments as well as some real dumb scenes. 7/10

Wolf of Wall St- I liked it a lot. Long, yes, but it wasn't one of the movies you were hoping would end. When I saw how much time was left, I was actually happy. 8/10

The Purge- good concept, not well executed. Entertaining but frustrating how thing happened to advance the story. You'll understand if you see it. 6/10

We're the Millers- some funny parts, but not enough to make up for the rest. 5/10

Jobs- I love true stories and was excited for this. The movie was good, but I wish they did better expanding on other characters that Steve had a relationship with. I understand it was "Jobs", but I'm fascinated with the amount of things accomplished with people he worked with. Gates was only mentioned in a 10 second scene over the phone. 7/10

Saw The Wolverine. Extremely disappointing/ed. If you are going to make a movie about an iconic Marvel character could you at least please read the ####### comic book?

Expendables 2

Just about as terrible as you'd expect. The fight scenes are well-choreographed. But the movie is too crass.
The series is an homage to 80's action films. I thought they hit the formula pretty well. I got exactly what I expected. Big explosions, all the right people dead and corny one liners.

"The Way, Way Back" may not have been the best movie of the year, but it was my favorite.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Just saw the Brolin "Old Boy" and I thought it paled in comparison to the original. Even as a stand alone, this movie didn't have a soul, much less a pulse.

Brolin shows off some acting chops, but otherwise there's no real reason to watch this instead of the first Oldboy (which had a kind of chaotic charm).

Copely and Sam Jackson are wasted to an almost embarrassing degree. Skip this unnecessary remake.

I agree with a lot of this. The more I think about it, the way Jennnifer Lawrence's character is written and acted really made the movie for me. She was hilarious.

I'm not saying it's terrible. But many of the lines are hoary.
Agree with jdogg. Didn't feel like an homage to anything. The whole series feels like a gratuitous money grab more than anything. I consider the first one to be tantamount to stealing. At least in part 2 they gave us the actors we paid to see in the first one before they 'bait-n-switched' the audiences.

No doubt but that's supposed to be part of the fun.

They are movie cotton candy. Not meant to be taken seriously or thought about just enjoy the momentary sugar rush and move on. So I'm good with them

Think she'll be the audience divider in this movie. Ultimately I think she's one of the reasons that the movie didn't work (Jar Jar Binks effect)

I am not taking them seriously and truly want to enjoy them but the first one was complete bait-and-switch theft. They promised Stallone, Willis and Arnold on screen and then gave us Terry Crews and Randy Couture, it was offensive. Silly and kinda fun but that was incredibly offputting.

The second one was more fun but maybe I am too far removed from Commando because the action felt boring and they substituted blood spatter for any sort of true action, particularly the final shootout in the airport.

American Splendor with Paul Giamatti was pretty decent although with the real Pekar sprinkled in throughout the movie, you can see that Giamatti played him too nice. He really does seem like more of a doosh than he's portrayed. Giamatti is just a special actor though. Not many actors can become the character like he does. 2.5/5

I picked up the Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz/World's End trilogy at Target...SotD is one my favorite movies, but the World's End might top it. 5 dudes trying to do a 1 mile/12 pub crawl 25 years after their first attempt...so funny.
