Watched Ong-Bak last night - for someone whose more used to the Jackie Chan style of fights, that was definitely a more brutal style there. The only Thai-style fighting I had seen in films before was Master of the Flying Guillotine, and the Thai fighter there was more for comic relief than anything. Pretty amazing stunt work, too.

Man On Fire

Absolutely phenominal movie. Story has been done a thousand times...girl is kidnapped, man goes on a rampage to get her back. But this time the story is extremely well done. The camera work is exceptional...lots of quick flashbacks add a lot to the effectiveness of the scene being shown. Dakota Fanning was amazing as the kidnapped girl. And I got a great sense of gratification after seeing each of those responsible getting mowed down.

One of the best movies I have seen so far this year. Well worth the rent.
Thanks to this post, I requested this as my next Netflix movie. Incredible movie!! One of the many things I liked about it was it's use of animating the subtitle words across the screen. That was just a little thing, but it was so effective. You're right, the camera work and camera angles used were very impressive. Great scenes, great cinemaphotography of Mexico City, great flick!

Finally saw Rushmore (old movie).

I was amazed how bad it was. An unlikeable lead followed by completely unbelievable situations at every turn. Laughed once the whole movie. Another critics movie.
 That movie is hilarity throughout. No fart jokes, though.
Name some funny parts. This must be one of those love it or hate it movies like Magnolia (which is on my Top 10 Worst of All Time lists).
The Irish kid was hilarious, and the play at the end, for example.I loved Magnolia, too.
Me, too.
Ditto.
Did you guys like Lost In Translation and Being John Malkovich too?I'm betting yes to both.
I liked both, although Lost In Translation didn't live up to the hype for me.
I thought the opposite.Magnolia - Bottom 10.... after the genius of Boogie Nights I was very dissapointed in this movie

Lost In Translation... Loved It

Being John Malkovich...... Meh... it was alright but not what I expected...

Rushmore...... good... but I can understand people not liking it. The main character isn't very likable and the plot is a little suspect.
I know there's no incentive to re-watch a film that you didn't like the first time. But I think Magnolia is better the third time than it is the first time. I think that film is full of some amazing acting.

Any of the above posters like Adaptation?
 Absolutely. You?
Yeah, love that movie.I also think it's great how differently everyone ranks the Wes Anderson films.
You know, the only problem I had with Being John Malkovich and Adaptation is I thought they both had weak endings. I thought both films were about 66% of a great film with weak final acts.

Just watched another one:

Dario Argento's "The Card Player"

- Pretty dissapointing. There is some horrific acting here. Better watch a classic Argento horror giallo film like "Deep Red" or " Tenebre."

:lmao: Yes, I did ... because they're both good movies.
I think that we should be on a movie review show together. We'd be entertaining because we would probably fight over every movie! :boxing: I hated BJ Malkovich and thought Lost In Translation was below average and obscenely overrated. You guys would probably hate my favorite movies like Excalibur, Dawn Of The Dead (original) and Somewhere In Time.

Isn't every big movie obscenely overrated? And Excalibur is tha shiznit.

You're right... some notable movies that I really enjoy that I disliked on first viewing include Unbreakable and Heat. I should give it another chance...

With all art, I think there's an initial, gut reaction that is sometimes offputting. If you can give the art another shot, sometimes you find yourself in a better place. The shock has worn off, and you're able to better analyze the art. In the case of Magnolia, there's a very bizarre scene I won't give away to people. It's a scene that many people hate. But for me, it was a symbol for how sick and diseased these people are. Thus, the plague metaphor.

I watched "Shopgirl" last night.

A movie that was well written and well plotted, but had one fatal flaw: there was ZERO chemistry between Steve Martin and Claire Danes. ZERO.

Putting aside that he is 35 years older than her, there was still no connection with these two.

And Connie Corleone's son, he has to be the hairiest little actor working in Hollywood today. I get itchy just watching him.

A good concept, but poor execution.

Batman Returns.

Mixed feelings. Pretty good overall, but the whole "oriental temple/sensei" thing was kinda lame.

Dead Again

Interesting murder mystery flick. I thought some of the acting (particularly Kenneth Branagh) was really bad, and the final dramatic ending sequence actually had me laughing at how cheesily it was done, but the story and twists were enough to keep me very interested in seeing how it was going to turn out. So in spite of what I would call quite poor execution, I still really did enjoy this movie.

Watched The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada last night and thought it was a very good film. It was written by the same guy who wrote Amores Perros and 21 Grams, two excellent films. It also marks the directorial debut of Tommy Lee Jones, who is the star of the film. Other known cast members include Barry Pepper, Dwight Yoakam, and January Jones. Movie won a couple awards at Cannes last year (Best Actor, Best Screenplay) and got 4 nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards. Was just released on DVD and I'd recommend it if you generally like independent movies with good acting.

Green Street Hooligans- FBG's rent this now!

It is about the soccer hooligans in England, and how each team has a firm (like a gang) that fights the other teams firms. Interesting look inside profesional soccer, and it's die hard fans. A bunch of cool fights, but the lingo was hard to pick up on sometimes. I don't think Elija Wood was the best guy for the role either, I just can't seriously picture him being tuff.

I'm gettting it today.....

I just saw "The Ringer." One of the worst movies I ever starting surfing the internet during.
I have mixed feelings on this one. I thought the overall premise was good but it was really dumb how it was executed. He needs to get money to save the fingers of a guy he hired? That was stupid. The love interest angle? That was dumb. I thought it was really weak they they made this movie about disabled kids but only used two challeneged actors in the main group he was hanging out in. The "real" actors they got to play Olympian roles were insulting. They should have made Knoxvilles character a real scumbag ( kind of like Matt Dillon's character in Something ABout Mary) who is only initally there to make money but sees the light on how hard these people work to achieve their goals. Either that or they should have made the rival athletic guy ( the black guy) a ringer himself and had the bulk of the movie being this comedic rivalry in which both guys try to out each other.

I just finished this and thought it was a very well done movie. I was a little skeptical about Wood in this role.... but he wasn't that bad. Definitely worth a rental.

Finally checked out Hostel.

Maybe I've just become de-sensitized to violence in films, but I found it pretty tame compared to other films. I was expecting to be repulsed by the horror of it, but it was just average stuff.

Lots of boobs, great idea but overall just ok.

I'm in the middle of Munich but stopped because my wife was falling asleep. Pretty interesting so far though.

16 Blocks - Pretty standard fare. I can't believe how old they made Bruce Willis look. The DVD has an alternate ending which I liked equal to the original. I don't think that's happened before. Usually one is better than the other.

Without A Paddle - I was at my FIL's cabin over the weekend and this was on the shelf. Not much to choose from, obviously. However, while I expected my intelligence to be insulted, it was not. It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but it wasn't wretched either.

caught Munich over the weekend. my gf fell asleep during the show too.. i kept watching.beware - this movie is about 150 minutes long. i wasn't expecting that.

not too bad. having seen a documentary with many of the involved parties kinda took a lot of the steam out of the movie.

solidifies Eric Bana in my mind. guy is a good actor (Troy or Alexander, whichever it was, notwithstanding).

I love comedies. It was never funny. Just lame.

:wall: Bill Murray at his finest.

Fun With #### and Jane Horrible.

United 93 Good, heavy, heart-wrenching and predictable. I'm glad the families were OK with this. Otherwise it would really have seemed like a sledge hammer.

He had a great role in Black Hawk Down. Nailed that. He's good.

Bana was outstanding. Good film

Saw it last week and my wife fell asleep too- Thought the movie was really good- INTENSE

Running Scared-   - I liked it, I would say it's worth a rental. A few slow parts, and I really wasn't too impressed with Paul Walker. Pretty unique, action packed movie. There is even a scene where some Russian hockey players are taking slap shots at Paul Walkers face

Last Days - I thought this movie was terribly boring. The characters were hard to identify with since they were so detached from reality. It was like they could have been the left overs from the movie Gummo. I wouldn't recommend this movie.

Underworld: Evolution - This wasn't great, but it was probably better in my eyes than it should have been since I watched it right after watching last Days. Lots of action. Kate Beckinsale is hot. Story....meh. But it was OK.

I saw this this weekend as well.I saw Underworld in the theaters, forgot most of the story. Really felt like I needed a refresher on that one to figure out what was going on in this one.

Action was good, SFx were very good.

I somehow started watching a movie called The Hillz on cable last night. Stay away at all costs, horrible(almost laughable) acting and a story(if you can call it that ) from hell.

when Paris Hilton is the 3rd cast member listed in a movie, it's probably a good idea to avoid it

Munich - Long and boring. I kept wanting to fall asleep, but finally made it through to the end.

Glory Road - entertaining and worth a rental.

16 Blocks - mehh... barely worth a rental.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Weird funny movie and definitely worth watching!

had heard great things about it but was generally unimpressed.

it's worth a rental though I suppose.

Alien Vs. Predator: Unrated Cut

Added some more gore. I seriously do not understand what fans of the Alien & Predator series didn't like about this movie. I think it's fun and action filled.

House Of Wax didn't suck.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Really, really liked it. Downey, Jr. and Kilmer had amazing chemistry together, I thought. The dialogue was well written and the comedic timing of the actors was perfect most of the time. It didn't even matter that the plot was a bit contrived.

Agreed. I saw it on the movie channel and I enjoyed it. I think both the Alien franchise and the Predator franchise were portrayed honestly and well.
