Colma: The Musical: Maybe it's that I'm not a big fan of musicals, but I was very disappointed. Colma is a town outside San Francisco where city residents bury their dead. The movie is kind of a high-school, living-in-a-crappy-place, rock musical that won some Independent Spirit awards and sounded interesting, but I couldn't get into it. All the songs sounded similar, and the humor and the people in the movie wore thin quickly. Not terrible, but not great. (3/5)
Not a big fan of musicals either, but I still hope you check out Reefer Madness: The Musical. You will not be disappointed. Promise. :goodposting: I finally got to check out Superbad the other night, and I loved it. After being somewhat disappointed by the hype surrounding Knocked Up, I was expecting to be let down by this one, too. It was the first laugh out loud new movie that I have seen in a long time. (5/5)
If you're a fan of spoof musicals, Trey Parker's and Matt Stone's (South Park) college project musical originally titled "Alfred Packer: The Musical" and now called "Cannibal: The Musical" is worth a watch.

In honor of the I Am Legend movie being released next week, we rented Omega Man and Last Man on Earth. Haven't watched the latter yet. Omega Man wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I never quite understood how being affected by the virus would suddenly make you a religious zealot subservient to Matthias. The Neville as kickass machine gun toting Christ figure was definitely interesting though.

Be prepared - even though the movies are only 7 years apart and based on the same book "I Am Legend". They feel like they are 30 years apart - and it's not just that LMOE is in black and white.

Cool, I just added this to my queue earlier today. I was also disappointed by Knocked Up, so wasn't sure what to expect.
:lmao: The first 45-60 minutes of Knocked Up were very funny. But the last hour or so was awful. That movie really falls apart and becomes preachy.

Spider-Man 3. My favorite of the three, but I was always a fan of Venom. I felt like they were cramming a lot in there, but overall it was a really enjoyable popcorn movie.

Ocean's Thirteen. Another of this past summer's trilogy installments. Pretty much the same as before. A few funny scenes, but overall it was pretty ho-hum.

Sicko. Michael Moore's documentary (?) on the US healthcare system. Now we've learned that you have to take everything that Moore puts in his movies with a grain of salt, but this film made some really good points. Moore even tones down his usual douchebaggery. Worth a watch.

Patton Oswalt: No Reason to Complain. Uncensored version of Oswalt's stand up special from Comedy Central. HI-Larious. Laughed so hard I was hurting afterwards. It had some extra's on it that were pretty crappy, but I loved this video.

Live Free or Die Hard. Willis is back. This is another popcorn action flick that didn't fail to impress. Check reality at the door, sit back, and enjoy. I loved it.

Gia. The tale of a fashion model's self destruction. Based on a true story. The model is played by a young Angelina Jolie. Extended nude and lesbian sex scenes involving Jolie make this one a must see. It also includes the most uncomfortable shower scene that included 2 hot chicks that I can ever remember.

:lmao: I don't get the hate for this movie.

My favorite movie of the summer.

I have been watching a lot of old movies on TMC

Maltese Falcon-This is an awesome detective mystery with Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade. A real Caper.

I am a Fugitive on a Chain Gang- An interesting story of a man framed for a murder and sent to a chain gang. I love the historical significance of the Chain Gang. He escapes and starts a new life....and becomes somebody special and tries to rectify his past when he gets found.

Desperate Hours- I loved this movie. A group break out of prison and hold a family hostage as detectives try and hunt them down. Another Humphrey Bogart movie.

Requiem for a Heavyweight- A great boxing movie by Rod Sterling (twilight zone dude). Anthony Quinn plays a has been that just got beat by Cassius Clay (plays himself). He tries to get a new job, but his agent (jackie gleason) is in a tight spot and trys to take advantage of him

Angels With Dirty Faces.- James Cagney plays a gangster that just got out of jail. He meets up with an old friend that is now a Father. Cagney goes back to his old ways, and tries to collect his old debt and his old friend becomes his nemesis.

You ever see Touchez pas Au Grisby? Great French crime/caper film from the mid 50s...It's a Jacques Becker with a GREAT performance from Jean Gabin...really a forerunner for so many of those caper genre films that followed...Well worth checking out

good calls. if looking for film noir, i always recommend the original "night and the city" with richard widmark. he does some really good acting. it's a good looking movie too...

Widmark is one of my favorites...His Tommy Udo in his movie debut in Kiss of Death is fabulous...Psychopath at it's craziest...Would also recommend Pickup on South Street and panic in the Streets

he's like a poor man's Kirk Douglas, in that he kind of mugs for the camera in his films. i think "night and the city" might be his finest work because there is some honesty to his performance.

Never saw it. Actually, I am pretty ignorant about foreign classic crime films.

Sweet. If you scan AMC, you get some decent unheralded noir. I saw "Kiss The Blood On My Hands" on AMC a few years ago and that was cool.

King of New York - what a waste of a great cast. :(
Really? I liked it. Great role for Larry Fishburne, and Walken was good as usual.
I love that movie. Walken does some of his very best work in that film. The cast is overrated because most of the roles are pretty small. It's Walken's film.
Walken is very good, but the other characters are so bad, he doesn't save it for me. not a terrible movie, was just expecting more

i can understand that. i was reading the wiki entry about it a moment ago. apparently, a lot of critics (including abel ferrara's wife) share your sentiment...

Maybe it's all about expectations. When I saw it years ago, it was a small, independent movie with a mostly unknown cast. So I enjoyed it. I think there's so much hype about Walken at this point, perhaps that affects the perception of King.

good point. for a time, abel ferrara was the hot indie director with "bad lieutenant", "body snatchers" and "king of new york".

I didn't see Body Snatchers. Was that any good?

not great but kind of fun. meg tilly does a great scene in it. gabrielle anwar is in it too.

I watched the original Russian version of Solaris last night. I liked some aspects of it, but if I talked about it, it would be deemed pretentious, so I'll just say overall "It was cool". (3/5)

Bored the #### out of me... Not enough explosions or space creatures.

The only thing that anybody called pretentious in this thread was making fun of people who post a positive review of a "blockbuster" type movie. Anything else resides purely in your own mind.

Caught "Supernova" on cable yesterday. 1995 scifi flick with Lou Diamond Phillips and James Spader. I'd never even heard of it but what an epic turd this movie was. Confused, jumpy, horrible editing, a story that didn't make a ton of sense, bad acting. This movie had it all.

Lou Diamond Phillips doesn't make bad movies...

laughably bad. not a high point in anyone's career there...

:lmao:  I saw that and hated it as much as the American version. :(

Live Free or Die Hard

Ok, for those who want a popcorn action flick, here it is. Yes, there are several parts that stretch reality to the point of breaking, but if you can get past that this is a great action movie. Good chemistry between Willis and the Mac Computer guy.
