So I mentioned goign to see Macbeth on broadway with Patrick Stewart as the lead... saw it last week.

Outrageously amazing staging- set in some kind of fascist, eastern-bloc type regime, which worked really well. The witches were actually MASH unit nurses, replete with hacksaws- were great. Stewart was amazing and didn't turn into a Borg once .

If the play wasn't so meh, my head would've popped off from happiness. But basically, Macbeth is a stupid play.... :shields-up:

dude, you couldn't be more wrong on this one. there is weak shakespeare to be found, no doubt, but this is one of his finest. probably my favorite of his plays.

Thanks to those here that recommended this movie. Terrance Malick is an odd director. The dialogue is almost unnecessary. This could have been a silent movie. Amazing, beautiful cinematography - which I've come to expect with Malick's movies. I wouldn't recommend this to any casual movie fan, and I would never watch it again. But definitely a good movie.

Mrs. Dogg points out that Brooke Adams was miscast - and I agree. Not exactly pretty enough that I believe two men would fight over her.

Just watched "Rambo"...my God!

I knew it was graphic but holy hell!

It doesn't have the writing of the first in the series, but I'd easily place this one above the other sequels.

It's action is honestly like no other movie in history...the violence is so real you can almost taste the iron in the blood. It's insane but not over the top dumb action like in the last sequel...it's just honest to goodness, pure adrenaline, heartstopping, jawdropping realistic gore...it can only be described as nothing short of action pron.

Gone Baby Gone: Another gooder. I couldn't imagine trying to make that decision (I would have gone the other route though). 4.5/5

Having seen far too many children returned to bad parents, I'd have to agree. Agree on the rating too, great movie. Is it just me or does what's his name always seem to play a cop?

Last weekend we had quite the mix of movies. Started the long weekend with

City By The Sea - Decent movie. I made the mistake of renting it despite seeing it before. I need some kind of movie checklist for when I'm renting a ton of movies. Worth a rental...or two.

North Country - I really liked this movie. Charlize was great and I love Frances McDormant when she's not faking a horrible accent.

Garfield - Even the kids were bored. Don't bother.

The Graduate - I can't believe I made it this long before seeing it. Poor Dustin Hoffman wasn't a very attractive young man. It was a decent story but I guess the hype of it being a "classic" killed it. Anne Bancroft made it watchable but I won't ever rewatch it.

House of Sand and Fog - I'll be recommending this one to family and friends. It's not often you have such trouble pinpointing a bad guy. Everyone just doing what they think is fair and still...it was a great movie, thought provoking and compelling. I loved it. One of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Envy - Meh. A few laughs but Ben Stiller has kind of run his course.

Kicked in the Head - Another yawn, another don't bother.

House of Sand and Fog - I'll be recommending this one to family and friends. It's not often you have such trouble pinpointing a bad guy. Everyone just doing what they think is fair and still...it was a great movie, thought provoking and compelling. I loved it. One of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Might be the most depressing movie I've ever seen.

Lars and the Real Girl - Pretty odd flick. The entire time my wife and I could not get over the kindness of the towns people and it just pushed it way over the top for us. It did however have a bit of charm to it so... 3./5

Wow. I'm surprised by your lukewarm reaction to this. i couldn't disagree more about adams either. she's perfect in this. especially when you consider the setting -- semi-remote prairie & farm -- for the film. she's pretty without being hollywood ravishing. given the implied isolation and loneliness that shephard's character experiences before their arrival, she's practically exotic. the other amazing thing about this film is that malick somehow managed to get maybe richard gere's best performance on celluloid.

I love Mamet, but this is a renter. Did you like it?

I love Mamet, too. I'd give it a 4/5, so I definitely thought it was good, but didn't seem to love it as much as my boyfriend did (though I think he's an even bigger Mamet fan than I). It was unusual for a Mamet film--while the dialogue was good, this was more of an action film than I've seen him do. He did an amazing job with the fight scenes--they seemed very realistic and not-at-all silly or overly contrived. I'm a sucker for films about honor, and this was basically a very good samurai/honor-type film. Also, I think he got better performances out of the actors than he normally does--Emily Mortimer is always a favorite, and the protagonist was extremely well-acted. Even Tim Allen was quite good. Maybe it helped that Rebecca Pidgeon had only a very tiny role.All in all, I'd say worth seeing now rather than waiting on a rental.

After hearing all the reviews, my interest in peaked for Juno. This was a movie I had no previous interest in seeing. I enjoyed Gone Baby Gone - but I generally enjoy movies that are set in Boston (Departed, Mystic River, Good Will Hunting), but I especially enjoyed this movie because it was filled in my back yard and there is once scene that took place on the street over from my business. For a moment, you can actually see my shop and yard in the movie and that is pretty cool.

This weekend I watched P.S. I love you and have to say this movie was terribly boring and had to force myself to watch the whole thing. It took two sittings and at the end, I was upset that I wasted the time sitting in front of the TV for this movie.

Well, I did mention that I wouldn't want to see the movie again. But that doesn't mean it's a not a good movie. I liked it. I liked the acting, the cinematography, and the narration. But I prefer The New World.

I liked it okay. A bit hokey in some parts, and about as cliche as they come, but hell, what more was I to expect? Plus Claire Danes is fine to look at. I'll give it a 3/5

Astronaut Farmer

Yeah, killed 2 hours and I don't feel that much worse for it. I've always liked BBT and this was just one of those movies that made me remember back to my childhood and simpler times. Like when I was a kid at my grandmothers house and stayed out till like midnight with the entire neighborhood just running around and collecting fireflies, only taking a break for when the ice cream man rolled around...while all the adults were outside having a few cocktails and mingling about. I'll give it a 2.5/5.

And, although not a movie rental, took the family out to see the new Indiana Jones movie. I really have no idea why anyone would have any gripes with this film. If you remember back to the original, there were plenty of silly scenes.....but the reason everyone loved it was really because it was the first big screen, big budget, adventure hunting movie made. It was fun, and not to be taken too seriously. Since then, the public has been inundated with others like it. Two more Indy movies, NAtional Treasure, Sahara, etc... I wanted to relax for a few hours and be taken to another time and watch a fun story. Mission accomplished. Sure there were a few scenes that seemed odd, and a bit of the old but I'm not expecting much more. I wouldn't strongly suggest it, but it's not bad at all. Give it a 3/5.

That's a good movie, but I don't know that Pidgeon would get much work in Hollywood if she wasn't married to Mamet.

Following - Christopher Nolan is putting together a nice resume with some impressive films. This was his first and although the budget was obviously low, he puts it together well with a film-noir mind trip. I won't put it on the level on Memento but it has some great twists and surprises. Might be considered a little slow at first by some but there is no waste of film since it all comes into play.

i'm with k4 on this film in that i think it's fantastic.

Don't get me wrong- I thought that it was a good movie. I just couldn't really relate to the characters or think the end was very tragic b/c of the reason I listed.
