Also saw In Bruges and loved it.

It's really rare when a film raved about by the critics is actually better than expected.

Good story, photography, acting and something else I noticed - it was the least predictable movie I've seen in a long time.

It also had a mix of violence and laugh out humor that reminded me of Fargo.
Saw In Bruges last night and loved it. Agreed with everything you said... it was a great script, great acting, and great camerawork. One of my favorite non-action/epic/super hero movies in a very, very, long time. Also rented Definitely, Maybe and Lars and the Real Girl and liked those two as well. Definitely, Maybe wasn't a bad chick flick and Father and Kid movies really get to me. Lars was also really good and funny how the movie made you feel like the towns people did... awkward, but accepting of Lars and the Real Girl.

Not a bad threesome of rentals.

Revolver

Understand that I am a big Guy Ritchie fan. So when you read my scathing words, know that I am pre-programmed to like Revolver. I was warned by Floppo and others that this isn't a good movie. But my brother in law is a fellow Ritchie fan, and he used the word "phenomenal" to describe it. I agree. This was a phenomenal piece of ####.

Where to begin? With Lock, Stock and Snatch, Ritchie blended humor with crime to very entertaining results. So where's the humor here? Fine, if Ritchie wants to make a straight drama, he really can't take himself too seriously. Revolver makes The Last Samurai feel like Harold and Kumar.

This is a boring, ham-fisted, self-indulgent movie full of characters no one could care about. Total garbage. Beautiful, lush, color-saturated garbage.

Underground : Palme D'Or winner at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. Bosnian film, hard to describe. High hopes for it, but realized that I never, ever like a movie described anywhere as "zany" or "madcap". So I didn't make it through this one. If you're not bothered by madcap, though, it might be worth a rental, as it had potential to be good.

Do you like the Marx Brothers' movies?

Haven't watched them since I was a kid, so it would be hard to say.

Casino Royale - This has been sitting on my DVR for months now, and I finally decided to watch it around 2AM Saturday night. Loved every second of it. I would say a top 5 Bond flick.
Good movie. The poker stuff was lame, though. That foot chase in the beginning is one of the best chases ever.
for those of us who HATE bond movies, is Casino Royale worth watching as a standalone?
Well, it's less silly than some of the other Bond movies. More of a focus on plot than gadgets. Craig is very good as Bond. Not sure I'd recommend it to someone that hates the franchise, though. Which aspects of the franchise do you hate?
Casino Royale:Pluses

Less gimmicks

No #### Brosnan

Good villian

Not the same old thing plot

Minuses:

Ugliest female lead in a Bond movie

Craig is pretty ugly, too, though he's tough enough to play Bond

Opening building scene was way too long
I would have to say it's the least Bond-like Bond movie that I can think of. It felt more like a Bourne movie. Watched the preview for the new Bond movie coming out in the fall/winter, and it feels even grittier, darker. Also looks to be a sequel to Casino Royale as opposed to most Bond movies that standalone. Bond is out for revenge for the things that happened at the end of CR.

Quantum of Solace looks pretty sweet.

:goodposting: Totally agree.

No humor and too much mind games = disappointment.

Yeah, and the mind games weren't really that interesting.

mcdonough is a fantastic playwright. my wife was on a tear with MM after reading "the lieutenant of inishmore" earlier this year. it's no surprise to me that he's able to pull this film off. we have it in our queue.
I also rented The Hammer with Adam Carolla, which I also recommend. Carolla plays a former golden gloves boxer that has kind of drifted aimlessly through life until he's given a chance to return to the ring as a 40 year-old olympic hopeful. I know, it sounds corny, but it works. There's plenty of quick witted humor, a believable romantic subplot, and solid supporting work from his amigo. Whatever you've built up (or down) in your mind as to what this movie is, it will surprise you. Rent it. (side note: One of the problems I had with this movie going into it was thinking "Carolla as a boxer?", but it turns out he is an actual former golden gloves boxer).
Watched both of these movies over the weekend. Both started off a little slow, but proved to be excellent for different reasons.Watched Pirates of the Carribbean 3 last week, just plain awful. The first 2 weren't Shakespeare but at least they were fun, but they sucked the fun out of this one and made it too serious with the occasional joke just sort shoe-horned in here and there. The plot was non-existent and made no sense. Glad I didn't bother with it in the theater.

Lately, I've been seeing various blockbusters or movies that everyone else seems to have seen at some point and I missed.

Transformers - Decent and kept me entertained the whole time. Of course I went in thinking it was going to be the worst movie I'd ever seen. Below zero expectations. I think that is the key to enjoying it. 5.5/10

Fight Club - Don't know how or why I missed this. Great film. Kept me thinking about it for at least the next week. 10/10

Full Metal Jacket - Falls off a bit in the second half but still a great movie. Another 10/10

Semi Pro - I like Will Ferrell movies. This one sucked. They gave away the whole bear part in the trailer and that was probably the best part. Not worth it. 3/10

The Bank Job - Decent but seemed to be missing something. It fell somewhere between a heist movie and Lock, Stock/Snatch. A lot closer to a heist movie though. It feels like they should have taken it one way or the other but they didn't. Fine to watch but only once. 6/10

Kill Bill Vol. 1 - I really liked this. Tarantino is at his best with minimal dialogue in his latest works. Watch Death Proof for evidence (or not - if you do, fast forward through the scenes where the groups of girls are talking to each other). 10/10

Cloverfield - Actually I was watching this for the second time with a friend. It was a great idea with OK execution. I probably expected way too much out of it but it's just not a great film. I still enjoyed it, though. 7/10

Shoot 'Em Up - Another rewatch with a friend. This is my favorite movie (which should give you some idea of my taste in movies). If you're a fan of action/comedy then you have to see this; it's basically the movie Crank tried to be but failed. (I liked Crank too, but it wasn't great; good enough to watch once, but when I saw it again I just found it painful to sit through.) 10/10

Pan's Labyrinth -- There's nothing I can add that hasn't already been said. Its brilliant and sad and beautiful. I loved it.
Just watched the end of this again. If you've not seen it -- seriously what are you waiting for? It's maybe the best movie of the last 10 years (I'm not sure I can think of a better one -- but I can't think of everything).

Just watched Crash...the Paul Haggis version...great story...very, very good movie!

Cheadle is a stud. Nice job by Dillon and Phillipe...and Ludacris wasn't bad.

Just finished Eagle vs. Shark. It falls into the category of "films I really enjoyed but really can't recommend to anyone". It had a definite Napoleon Dynamite feel to it with the characters and the pacing, but not as good as ND. My wife and I watched it before going on a car trip this weekend, and found ourselves quoting lines from it, always a good sign.

Watched this a while back...I liked it. Quirky/Funny. 7/10

A Shot in the Dark

Entourage's Adran Grenier made an HBO documentary about reuniting with a father he never knew. Good stuff. Going into it, you think the dad's going to be a creep - but he isn't. I liked it.

Wanted

Not bad. Very silly. Makes The Matrix look like a documentary. But what can I say? It was entertaining. Plus to get to see a nice partial shot of Angelina Jolie's ###.
cool. It looked ok and I was just hoping it was worth a rental when it comes out.
If you don't mind completely implausible action flicks like Die Hard 4, you may like Wanted.
I really don't understand the criticism of this movie that it was "unrealistic." I mean what were people expecting? A documentary about the life of an assassin? An expose into the trials and tribulations of an assassin who can -- curve bullets. I thought it was a lot of fun from start to finish.

I enjoyed Wanted immensely. I wasn't criticizing the realism - or lack thereof. Someone asked if he'd like it, so I gave him Die Hard 4 as a frame of reference.

Been watching some kids fare. I'll put in a cartoon at night after bath time for the son. Good gawd are there a lot of terrible kids movies. Good thing we only watch about 20-30 mins before bed.

Movies I thought were quite bad: Barnyard, Open Season, Ice Age 2, Bee Movie, Over the Hedge, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and basically any straight to DVD sequel - Leroy and Stitch, Fox and the Hound 2, etc, etc...

For whatever reason, the only movie that I 1/2 enjoyed was Surf's Up and that was average at best. Seems like Pixar's about the only studio that can put out a product that I'll watch in this genre.

What the hell do you watch with your kids??

Also, for preparation for The Dark Knight been doing some movie marathons. Watched the first 2 Tim Burton Batman movies, and then watched a couple of Christopher Nolan movies - Memento, Insomnia, and The Prestige.

I don't think the first Batmans have aged well. I never really bought Mr. Keaton as Batman for starters, and just thought the movies dragged more than I remember and were just too over the top cartoony for me now. These were some of the best movies out there and great for the time, but I'd much rather watch a long list of movies from that era than watch these again. Maybe I'm too much of a fan of the darkness that the new version went to over the cheesy Burton version.

The other 3 movies I had seen already as well. Memento is still easily a top 20 movie for me, and I think The Prestige is amazing as well - probably top 5 in the last 3-4 years for me. Insomnia is a good movie, but probably my least favorite of the Nolan movies. However, even an average movie of his seems to be better than 80% of the movies being produced. If there is somebody lurking in the thread that hasn't seen any of these 3 movies, I would highly recommend you do so.

The Bucket List - 6/10

Tolerable. The beginning and ending acts are actually quite poigniant. The middle part however, where they actually start working their way through the list, is outlandish while being not very fun at all. A missed opportunity there.

Still, at least Nicholson isn't turning into Brando in his later years and is still trying a bit.

Walk Hard / Dewey Cox Story -- I laughed more than I thought I would.
Admit it, you just liked the 5 minutes of penis on the screen...I watched "No Reservations" with the wife this weekend. I wasn't expecting much, but it still managed to under deliver. Pure crap. Bad acting, worse dialogue, and a bratty kid to boot. It was a recipe for disaster. [/movie critic pun]

watched a bunch of movies this weekend.....

The Lives of Others

This movie has been discussed in this thread seemingly ad nauseam, so I'll feel free to add my thoughts. Almost without fail, movies that are highly recommended in this thread fall short (far, far, far, far, far) of expectations. And I know that people have vastly different tastes, particularly when it comes to movies (and music), so I can basically tell who's recommendations I will agree with, and who's I simply pass over. So, this movie did not rocket up my netflix queue, rather just sat there, slowing drifting upward and upward, until it arrived at my house. I knew from previous reviews that I would need to set aside time for this one, so I waited until a Saturday afternoon when the kids were preoccupied and would not interrupt. Well, this movie is the one exception to the previously stated rule that recommended films fall short of expectations. This movie is simply great. I'm not sure what to say which hasn't been said beforehand, other than if you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it. (yeah, i know it's been said before, so let me reiterate). 5.0/5.0

The Simpsons Movie

I like the Simpsons, I liked this movie. I'm glad I didn't need to spend 50 bucks to bring my family to see it in the theater, because it's just one long episode. Laughs here and there, some hard laughs, but all in all, nothing extraordinary. 2.5/5.0

Wild Hogs

A few laughs, Marissa Tomei, other than that, not much in this one, other than a bunch of actors cashing a paycheck. Ray Liotta? Come on Ray, what the hell are you doing. I guess you pretty much know what your getting yourself into when you watch this one, and it doesn't fail miserably, so I'll give it a 2.0/5.0

Finally caught "We own the night" .. I enjoyed it.. not as much as say Departed, but it had it moments and kept my attention throughout... 3 1/2 out of 5..

Also the original "3:10 to Yuma" was on over the weekend.. Not bad, but I can see why they remade it.. There was a lot to add to it.. I actually liked the ending in the "remake" compared to the original. 3 out of 5.

Well, I am thinking that it's finally about time to watch the 2 highly touted movies in here this week. The Lives of Others and Pan's Labyrinth will be watched this week - no excuses.

Watched Vantage Point last night ... well, all but the ending. The damn DVD kept stalling at the same point. I will hide where I last saw and hopefully someone can fill me in on what I missed.

Saw a few spaghetti westerns over the weekend:

Django - similar to A Fistful of Dollars. I started watching this and the lines really didn't make a lot of sense. Switched back to Italian and turned on the subtitles, and the movie was tons better.

The Great Silence - This one was really different, and was set in the snow to boot.

Both were well worth seeing.

You know, I think Burton's a better designer than he is a director. Most of his movies (aside from Ed Wood) are beautiful - but very flawed.

I like this movie a lot. I hope you listened to the 50 minute interview with the director. Because that made the movie even better knowing all the care that the director took to craft what's on screen.

I forgot that I watched Stop-Loss the other night.

Not surprising, but this was a movie with an agenda and a message. Not as if that is a bad thing - see movies like Syriana, but this one tried way too hard. It was OK, but was really dragged down by the unrealistic way the story unfolded and by how "ram it down their throats" they were getting with their message. Not sure if I'd recommend it, and was surprised that critics were actually saying good thing about the movie. It did have some nads to make a movie like that while the war is still going on, but it was just too much.

A film critic on NPR commented that the war movies haven't been very good during the Iraq war. I did see some of the excellent HBO doc "Alive Day Memories" about injured soldiers that survived Iraq.

Just saw the first Hellboy. Really fun movie, and thankfully didn't take itself too seriously. Looking forward to the second one now.

I just remember that there were a couple of critics that recommended the movie that I usually agree with - Peter Travers was one that I remember. For those of you that have seen it, or don't intend to see it my major beefs were:mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

1. All this crap happens over a short leave? come on - every major character lost it in some way. One has 3 DUIs in that time, one beats his wife, one decides not to go back drives to DC, then to the Mexican border, and is also losing his mind. Just way too much.

2. After all that, he gets on the bus at the end? WTF.

It's such a great movie and it doesn't lose any of it's power on repeat viewings even when you know what the twist is.
