Shoot 'Em Up

This was free on HBO, so I am glad I didn't pay for it. Total trash. Not just a waste of time, this movie is depraved. I've watched and enjoyed more action flicks than anyone. But Shoot 'Em Up is so crass, it makes Predator look like a chick flick. Nothing redeeming about this movie. Absolute ####.

The carrot scene was dumb. My objection was the disgusting aspects of this movie. Baby in extreme danger, new mother gets a bullet in her head, etc., etc. This movie is amoral.

Watched Hancock last night.



Liked for a little bit, but it really needed to decide what type of movie it was going to be. Started off a light little flick with a couple good laughs, then the last 1/3 was pretty dark. The definition of "meh", but probably would still suggest it to people looking for a mindless flick for the holiday weekend.

I liked it for about the reason you didn't. It wasn't just a Hero movie, or just an action movie. It added something. I'm hoping the DVD has an "extended" version as I think there could have been more added to the characters. It is on my short list of Christmas ideas for my family.

watched Nightwatch last night

its was made about 10 years ago, stars Ewen McGregor, Josh Brolin, and Nick Nolte. EM takes a job as the nitghtwatchman at the medical examiner building when an apparent serial killer is on the lose. As the movie progresses, EM begins to look like a suspect.

I thought it was good enough. The director did a great job of making the scenes in the examiners building creepy as hell. McGregor was better than he usually seems to me, Nolte was solid, and Brolin was great

I have the last 2 episodes of Season 2 coming from Netflix. That season got some bad reviews but I really liked it so far. Can't wait to start Season 3. Great show.

I dont think theres a weak Season in the bunch. If there is, Id probably say 5, but they wrapped everything up so great Id have a hard time saying that.From what I remember, every season is over 4.5/5 stars on Netflix's user ratings (although maybe thats how they relate them to my ratings, cant remember)Only reason I think some didnt enjoy 2 as much would be because of how much time was spent with the Docks/Union/Sobotka's. Right after watching Season 3, I thought 2 was the weakest but when I thought about it more, it really is just as good as the other seasons, just had a different angle than the others.Plus I liked it a lot because you see the rise of Stringer Bell while Avon's in jail. His dealing with D'Angelo was COLD as ICE

Maybe it was the 92 rating on Rotten Tomatoes, or the fact that Time called it "what movies should be", or the fascination of combining Bollywood with Danny Boyle, but I really didn't enjoy this movie. It was so trite, so saccharine, ugh. I'll give it 2/5 just because the child actors are amazing, and the penultimate scene with the protagonist's brother is very well done.

The second to the last scene with the protagonist's brother? Honestly...who counts the scenes? Is that really what you were trying to say here?

For The Sopranos, I think even the biggest fans would agree that seasons 1-4 are a lot better than what follows.I think The Wire season 2 is every bit as good as the rest of the series. Maybe it's the subject matter than people don't like.

At this point, the hype could hurt your appreciation of the show. Having watched a lot of cop dramas on TV, I find The Wire to be a lot more realistic. The casting, the writing, the stories, they feel so real. Which isn't surprising since real cops work with the show as consultants and writers.My one caveat is to try to watch a lot of shows before you judge it. The characters take awhile to develop. And when I say the show is realistic, that means you won't see a lot of gunfire or chase scenes. If you like dialgue-driven drama, I think you'll enjoy The Wire.

I definately recommend it. It's as gritty and detailed a drama as I've seen. Watch the first few episodes and you'll be hooked.

tropic thunder -

robert downey's lincoln osiris character was amazing... he also (briefly) inhabits a russell crowe like australian actor... thus the line, i'm the dude, playing the dude, thats supposed to be the dude (or something to that effect )... his ability to play a role inside a role, like nested chinese boxes or russian dolls, was reminiscent of several other actors...

peter sellars was well known for this (i think he plays three characters each in kubrick's lolita & dr. strangelove, and did many impersonations in the pink panther films)...

further back & less well known (these two probably related), alec guiness portrayed something like a half dozen characters in the somewhat obscure but brilliantly ascerbic & scathingly satirical british black comedy, kind hearts & coronets (a distant heir to a fortune proceeds to bump off 6-7 members of a family one by one... ALL played by guiness ((including at least one woman)), in which he recedes seemingly deeper & deeper into each proceeding character in a tour de force performance/s)...

i would add downey to the above short list of some of the most gifted actors & inspired performances i've ever seen at taking on multiple roles... eddie murphy did this of course in coming to america, with arsenio hall (barbershop scene, including the hilarious old jewish man, who i didn't even recognize until the credits rolled)... also in nutty professor, not only with the "family" around the table, but in the dual role of the professor & buddy love... BUT, imo, these performances were not on the same level as guiness, sellars & downey...

Yeah, I forgot to point that out in my comments. I was actually going to rent it again later to listen to the commentary. I assume it's because of the line in the movie about not breaking character until the DVD commentary is finished.

and pretty much to the instant when he returns to the crowe-like kirk lazarus, he changes his voice to THAT character, a hysterical transformation (he was cracking up stiller & black)...good point, i was thinking the same thing about the line in the movie as i was listening to the commentary... anyways, it was a hilarious idea...

Equilibrium - (5/10) -- A cross between Matrix and Vendetta (both of which I enjoyed more than Equilibrium). Not a bad way to spend 90 minutes, but nothing about it would make me recommend it to others.

Iron Man - (8/10) -- Nice job by Robert Downey, Jr. I enjoyed this movie more than most of the recent comic book to move genre. Not sure Gwenyth Paltrow added much to the movie.

I wouldnt say it sets up a feud, but it does create a major complication get back when you finish Season 3(Im actually rewatching Season 5 at the moment...ahh, The Wire)

Charlie Wilson's War - Not sure how I managed to sit through this. Hoffman and Hanks were good as usual but the story did not interest me in any way. I didn't care about any of the characters and was not moved emotionally in any way.

Joy Division - I'm a huge JD fan and own the excellent Closer movie. This was an interesting documentary interviewing the band members and some of the people connected with the band (producers, annike etc.). Well worth seeing. I can't help wondering what the band would have produced over the years had Curtis been around. I probably won't buy it, but I am glad that I heard people's stories. There was even a clip with DJ John Peel doing his thing. If you are a fan, watch it.

Emilio Estevez directs an all-star cast. Plotline revolves around the hotel where Bobby Kennedy was killed. I am looking for someone to tell me that this movie is worth watching. I am about 25 minutes into the movie, and Aston Kutchner is wearing a ridiculous wig trying to act like a hippie.

I think with an all-star cast, you need to be careful as a director. It seems like Estevez made a movie for his actor buddies to show off in. I think this movie is pretty weak so far, and I am unlikely to finish it.

Not sure if this post has been addressed yet, but I have the same answer for both series: give them both some time. I couldn't stand the first few episodes of either show, but both are so well-done that they end up sucking you in over time. And they're both very well worth the time spent.

hellboy II... if you liked the first one, you should like it... i heard peter jackson declined the hobbit, & del toro was signed...

casino royale - rewatched it before quanturm of solace (which i'll get to in a minute)... i had read some of the original fleming novels, but it has been a while... went back & have been devouring the complete series at the rate of about one every 2 days... the reason i'm mentioning this is casino royale is much more faithful to the spirit of the original novels (certainly since connery left)... the original novels were very dark (the torture scene came from the novel)...

imo, craig is the best bond since connery... the series had sort of become a bloated, indulgent charicature & parody of itself, and the one liners that moore handled with aplomb (& aren't really in the novels, that i can recall), had become tedious, sort of like going through the motions...

needless to say, i'm a fan of the reboot of the series... its darker, grittier, far more stripped down & back to basics...

in a few ways, it became almost the anti-modern bond (which had gotten further & further away from the original)...

no jetpacks or submarine cars (the props could be spectacular at times but at others, over the top & goofy)... no Q... few if any one-liners... no villains with cats (mike myers send up was so dead on that when i think of a villain with a cat, i almost think of dr. evil before blofeld now ) or metal jaws...

the foot chase near the beginning was maybe the most singularly spectacular scene in the entire bond iconography... i've been starting to hate car chase scenes for a while (probably been played out since about when william peterson went against freeway traffic ((with some amazing long shots of onrushing traffic)) in billy friedkin's to live & die in LA, a few decades ago...

that said, i was not as big a fan of QOS... maybe it is the new director (because monster's ball is so much like a bond movie, it is easy to see why they naturally gravitated to each other?)...

without any overt spoilers (obviously )...

i liked the bourne movies, but this quick cutting is beginning to become seizure-inducing for the audience...

wimpy villain... minimal chemistry or even interaction with bond girl...

instead of extorting the west for a bazillion $$$, the caper involves... water in a south american country... OOOOOOHHH! real edge of the seat, white knuckler premise...

not, imo, a good story, plot, dialogue... not the worst bond movie, but far from the best... & i found it a disappointment after the promise held by the arc & trajectory of the immediately preceding casino royale reboot (incidentally, it is the first "sequel" proper, taking place about an hour after where casino royale left off)...

hope they get a different director/writer for next two craig has reportedly signed on for (but maybe not, since it is killing at the box office)...

* bond trivia... what was the only bond movie done twice (not counting the two casino royales, as i don't count the first one, a comedy)...

You would be referring to Thunderball, remade terribly in 1983 as Never Say Never Again. Connery was too old to convincingly play Bond at that point, never mind the weak script and amateurish set pieces. Supposedly the guy that got this turd off the ground is still looking to remake it a third time, calling it "Warhead."A side note about Thunderball - I like Tom Jones and all, but what is the deal with that crazy theme song? I don't know what a "thunderball" is, or how a person would strike like one. So really, the title makes no sense either. Hmmm. Not the first time one would say that about a Bond flick.

What I found out from an IMDB thread:Thunderball is the lightning effect that occurs inside the mushroom of a nuclear explosion.

Also the name of the MI6 mission in the movie to retrieve the warheads.

Absolutely loved Tropic Thunder. A funny original story with a great cast. Even if you don't like Jack Black or Ben Stiller, check out the movie. Robert Downey is great and say what you want about Tom Cruise being crazy and all, he is an amazingly versitile actor who always delivers. Highly recommend it.

Haven't watched it yet. It's one of those that I've been going back and forth if I want to try it out or not. Seems like I end up finding something else when I go to get movies. Didn't seem to be that funny from the trailers, but I'm sure I'll end up seeing it sometime.

Emilio Estevez directs an all-star cast. Plotline revolves around the hotel where Bobby Kennedy was killed. I am looking for someone to tell me that this movie is worth watching. I am about 25 minutes into the movie, and Aston Kutchner is wearing a ridiculous wig trying to act like a hippie.

I think with an all-star cast, you need to be careful as a director. It seems like Estevez made a movie for his actor buddies to show off in. I think this movie is pretty weak so far, and I am unlikely to finish it.

Not at all. I generally dislike comedies but found myself laughing throuhgout this one. There's almost no plot to speak of, but I didn't care.I also have a new appreciation for Anne Hathaway.I take it you didn't like it.

The trailers didn't do it justice. I was reluctant to see it and probably wouldn't have if it weren't for my dad coming for Thanksgiving. He liked the TV show.Also, I grade movies relative to others in the genre. In other words, I rated this as a 7.5 in comedy. That doesn't mean that it's equivalent to a 7.5 in drama or action since I consider those genres superior by nature. So take my rating FWIW.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster - 9/10 - Documentary about steroids, and how they are just as American as anything else. Tons of good footage of Hulk Hogan, Arnold, and Stalone.

A Very British Gangster - 6/10 - Documentary about a British gang that runs Manchester. The leader of the gang is openly gay... I found this pretty strange.

Absolutely loved Tropic Thunder. A funny original story with a great cast. Even if you don't like Jack Black or Ben Stiller, check out the movie. Robert Downey is great and say what you want about Tom Cruise being crazy and all, he is an amazingly versitile actor who always delivers. Highly recommend it.

Shoot 'Em Up

This was free on HBO, so I am glad I didn't pay for it. Total trash. Not just a waste of time, this movie is depraved. I've watched and enjoyed more action flicks than anyone. But Shoot 'Em Up is so crass, it makes Predator look like a chick flick. Nothing redeeming about this movie. Absolute ####.

It can't be worse than Crank.

Yes, it actually is. I couldn't even get 20-25min through this movie. (esp. after the "death by carrot" scene)

I don't know if it's been mentioned previously (and I forgot to mention it when I saw it theaters a few months ago), but I saw The Visitor again the other day and was reminded of how good it was. I definitely recommend this one for those who appreciate understated drama.

Was just recommending this to a B&M friend last night. The longer I think about it, the better this movie was.
