Shoot 'Em Up

This was free on HBO, so I am glad I didn't pay for it. Total trash. Not just a waste of time, this movie is depraved. I've watched and enjoyed more action flicks than anyone. But Shoot 'Em Up is so crass, it makes Predator look like a chick flick. Nothing redeeming about this movie. Absolute ####.
It can't be worse than Crank.
Yes, it actually is. I couldn't even get 20-25min through this movie. (esp. after the "death by carrot" scene)
worst scene in movie history
Since it's been mentioned several times, could someone explain this scene to me?

Bad guy gets stabbed through the eye with carrot.

Absolutely loved Tropic Thunder. A funny original story with a great cast. Even if you don't like Jack Black or Ben Stiller, check out the movie. Robert Downey is great and say what you want about Tom Cruise being crazy and all, he is an amazingly versitile actor who always delivers. Highly recommend it.

4/5
bad movie, not funny, over ratedcut it off half way
I am avoiding this movie. It looks awful.

I only got about 5 honest, hearty laughs throughout this whole film. The rest of the time was a snoozefest. 1.5/5

I would consider it, but I am pretty leery of any Ben Stiller comedy. He's a lot smarter than many of his comedies.

I thought Tropic Thunder had some very funny parts but overall was just ok.

Bobby was terrible, the first 45 minutes was just a new scene starting with one of the big name actors to showcase how great the cast was. The most interesting part of the movie was the real life footage of Bobby Kennedy.

I hated Tropic Thunder

Laughed maybe 2 times the whole movie maybe twice

I just saw Milk last night. It'll probably be up for best picture of the year, and I'd definitely recommend it. Sean Penn was excellent as Harvey Milk and the story was directed beautifully by Gus van Sant.

No. But I may give it a try.

Is this shtick?
Not at all. I generally dislike comedies but found myself laughing throuhgout this one. There's almost no plot to speak of, but I didn't care.I also have a new appreciation for Anne Hathaway.I take it you didn't like it.
I'm a huge fan of Carell and have always loved the original series...plus I've lusted after Hathaway for many years...and even in light of all of those positives...they could not outweigh the monumental negatives that this movie created. It was crap...plain and simple.

really liked the recently released the fall (by tarsem singh, who i think has only done the cell, previously)... this was one of the best movies i've seen this year... not perfect, i thought the end was a bit abrupt...this has probably fallen through the cracks, as i don't think it reached any kind of distribution outside of the festval circuit... i thought the cell was visually stunning, but somewhat lacking in the story department... the fall is even more visually stunning, & imo is a much better story... he doesn't have a very deep body of work (sort of like an indian terrance mallick? :goodposting: ), but after seeing this movie, i'm starting to think he could be an important director and worth following his career... somewhat like gilliam's baron von munchausen, employing similar narrative vehicle to spin out episodic tales... also like wizard of oz (& munchausen), characters & events from the narrator's world are incorporated into & interwoven with the tales...this could almost be a family classic (but a dark one, like pan's labrynth), but maybe not ideal for YOUNG children, as there is some heavy underlying subject matter... a paralyzed and hospitalized stunt man ('30s or '40s?) distraught over being jilted tells a young girl fellow patient an epic tale of revenge, betrayal & love, in order to cajole her into stealing morphine so he can carry out his intent to suicide... at any rate this movie could appeal at a lot of levels, & could have crossover appeal for most ages, young & old... the stunt man & central character doesn't look like him, but his way of speaking reminds me of owen wilson... the little girl steals the show...the scope of this work is also maybe reminiscent of gilliam in that he paints on an extremely broad canvas & the story is wildly imaginative (i suspect a big reason singh took so long between movies was probably a gilliam-like difficulty in securing funds from financiers who balk at the prospect that his epic scope of vision could exceed the resources alotted to the budget for a weird movie by a quirky director that may not have mainstream appeal & bankability)... but the look is more streamlined & maybe even refined... gilliam can be a bit bloated at times, though i do admire him a lot for the most part...
Based on this recommendation/review, I rented this and watched it. Great stuff. Amazing visuals and the story wasn't too bad either. The girl definitely stole the show.

Notes On a Scandal.I didn't care for the story in the movie too much...it was rather depressing....but Judi Dench proved again she is one of the greatest living actresses.
Just saw this flick.First, Cate Blanchett is ridiculously beautiful.A very good movie. All the characters were well developed and the story flowed very well.

A very rare case in which I thought the movie was better than the book. :own3d:

the business of being born my wife picked this but it was an interesting documentary about midwives/home birthing versus hospital births. I think it's main point was to get people to consider other options than the status quo today in normal births. My wife, a nurse, thought it was interesting and well done, but skewed too far positive without acknowledging the positives of hospital births in normal births where no surgery is required. It was educational to me, and some for her too, but she'll need more convincing.

Warning: there are scenes that are quite graphic. Could have done without that.

I saw two great movies this weekend:

1) Rachel Getting Married. Really fantastic. Hathaway just slips into the character perfectly and you forget it's her almost immediately. Hard to believe so much emotional weight and drama could be packed into a short weekend, but given the set-up of the film, I bought in. The only plot device I had trouble with was the scene in the hair salon and the chance meeting Kym has with the guy she was in rehab with. The dishwasher competition scene was really amazing, and the rehearsal dinner was an incredibly note-perfect performance by the entire group. Just great stuff. Hathaway will get some Best Actress run I'm sure, but I hope it at least gets consideration for BP.

2) Cocaine Cowboys 2. So many WTF!!! moments about an ambitious Oakland drug dealer and the imprisoned Colombian coke queen, Griselda Blanco. Pretty scary to hear about all of the #### that went and goes down right down the hill from me, and the cunning that Blanco uses. It was never stated in the documentary, but I can't imagine she didn't set up the string of events (sexual encounters) that affected her stint. Not a straight-up documentary, a lot of re-enactements (sometimes with animation), but Osby's extended interviews are the backbone of the film, and are very compelling. It's believed she was behind 200 murders, and 300 TONS of blow coming into the country.

Australia

The movie was too long. The last forty-five minutes were OK - it was the first 2 hours I had to sit through that made me want to leave the theater. There are also like 3 points the movie could've just ended and been its own, OK movie. Just a mishmash of a movie. Definitely not Nicole Kidman's nor Hugh Jackman's best performance.

Only redeeming quality: controversial aspects of history covered in the movie - discrimination and "cleansing" efforts in Australia during WWII.

2/5 stars

Saw that, and added it to the top of my queue. Should be able to watch it this week on Blue-Ray. I remember when it came out, but never saw it. Based on that Ebert review, it was hard to pass up.here's another review of the movie/blue-ray DVD:

I saw the trailer, and it looks horrible. Skip.

Wanted

If you like over the top action, you'll love this movie. Movie was filmed in Chicago and stars James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman. Felt like I was watching a Matrix sequel at times. Definitely worth a rental.

I have been avoiding Wanted, but might have to give it a try when I feel like watching an action flick.

Recently watched Tropic Thunder... I would have rather spent the time shovelling snow in a speedo. Horrible movie. Only a couple of scenes that I thought were somewhat funny. I am surprised to see that some people actually enjoyed the movie.

Finally watched Dark Night. I really enjoyed this movie. I went in with low expectations as I thought the death of Ledger gave people a reason to rate this movie higher then what it should have been. But at the end I was impressed with the story, and thought that Ledger's acting was fantastic. He totally sold the crazy Joker. I will be watching this one again.

Edited to Add:

The Promotion. I believe this was a straight to DVD film with Sean William Scott and the guy not named Will Ferrell from Taladega Nights & Step Brothers. Avoid this movie at all costs. It's been 4 days and I am still upset with myself for watching this garbage.

I just saw Marky Mark and (costar) Kate Mara's Funky Bunch in "SHOOTER".

It was OK as an action flick.

Part Rambo - part Bourne Identity.

It was a mindless action flick - which is exactly what I'd hope it would be.

Kate Mara is an up and coming hottie... She was the 'widowed' girlfriend in WE ARE MARSHALL, she also had some lesbo scene in some FOX series. She's got a huge set of brown eyes, and other assets as well, as seen here in Shooter.
:hey: Saw this again on HBO last night. Kate is hot.

Blindness.

I can't begin to describe how terrible this movie is. There are a lot of people, most non-Americans, mocking Americans for not "getting" the movie since it's meant to be allegorical, but even allegories should have some semblance of logic to them and this one had none.

A few very good ones and one clunker:

Taxi to the Dark Side: 2008 Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature, about an Afghan taxi driver who is (wrongfully) arrested and then murdered by US troops in Bagram air base. More than that, it's a scathing indictment of the use of torture not only in Bagram, but in Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. Should be required viewing for all Americans. Note to Errol Morris: it's possible to let the story just tell itself, as it does in this movie, without annoying voiceovers and Philip Glass music. 4.5/5

Jellyfish: Israeli film, winner of the Camera D'Or at Cannes, about the intersecting lives of several women. I didn't expect a lot here and was pleasantly surprised. The overarching theme of the need to connect and communicatewas beautifully approached as the film weaves fantasy and reality together poetically but not melodramatically. The result is a slightly surreal but ultimately grounded and fantastic movie. 5/5

Encounter at the End of the World: Werner Herzog documentary about researchers in Antarctica. Some beautiful and amazing shots, but long periods of nothingness as well. Herzog is, as always, kind of a riot, though, as he makes statements in his Teutonic accent such as "I despite the sunlight". My boyfriend was laughing his ### off the whole time. I was less taken with it. 3/5

Father and Son: If you like homoerotic Russian films, this is for you. 1/5

The Edukators: It's hard to review this movie without giving away key plot points. Never have I watched a movie before and then watched it immediately again, but I'm about to do so with this one. The movie starts with one of the best opening scenes I've ever seen. Then it becomes a very humane, balanced look at idealistic youth. From the NY Times: "The film is, to some extent, a sympathetic exploration of the state of political idealism in the contemporary West, where all avenues of resistance seem blocked or co-opted by the system. But it is also a sometimes mocking exposé of what the old left used to call political infantilism. The director is clearly fond of his radicals - and the terrific actors playing them do so with exemplary conviction - but he also points out the blind spots and contradictions that distort their view of the world and turn their self-styled heroism into self-dramatizing foolishness." Again I don't want to give anything away (and would recommend you not read any synopses or reviews if you see the movie), but I can't say enough about how good this one is. In German, by the way. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that the final scenes are played out against a background of Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah". 8 billion/5

:lmao: I forgot to mention the heavy Oedipal overtones, too. :banned:
:tfp: I added Edukators to my queue. It'll be on deck after I get through watching Season 6 of 90210. :bag:
I hope you like it. I just watched most of it again (skipped through some of the introductory parts after the first scene) and REALLY love this movie. There are slow parts (which I don't mind), but the first scene and the second half of the movie are just outstanding. And the final scenes are great and provide a perfect bookend to the first scene. Think I'm going to have to buy this one.

Seriously though, Wanted was pretty damn entertaining. I put it in the same category as Jumper, but Wanted is about 10 times more entertaining. I didn't like th main actor at first, but he grew on me after a while. And while I realize that Jolie isn't everyone's cup of tea, she makes my naughty parts tingle.

Gangs of New York

Mrs. Dogg had never seen this movie, so I watched it with her again. This is my favorite Daniel Day Lewis role. DiCaprio is also very good in Gangs. I've long said that putting Cameron Diaz in the movie was the worst casting decision since Sophia Coppola in Godfather III. But seeing it again, she was fine. Still a horrible casting decision, but Diaz does the best she can.

This movie should have sucked. But I admit it was entertaining. The limo assassination stunt was worth the price of admission alone. And as dumb as the curving bullet thing is, the movie has you believing it's possible.

Wanted: I'm a huge action junky fan but I just didn't like this one much. Never bought the lead guy in his role and for such a bunch of super smart assassins, they seem to be naive and dumb.

I'll admit to being a sucker for anything NY history but I just love Gangs of NY. I'm not sure if people underestimate the characters in the film or don't really know the history of the city but it is a damn great visual of life in those times. A very underrated film.

A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints...

Very well done coming of age story set in 1980's New York......very depressing but excellent performances by Chazz Palmenteri, Robert Downy Jr. and Shia LeBeuf......
I just watched this. It is excellent. The acting is outstanding and the whole movie is terrific.
Wanted to see this for a long time, but never got around to it. 4.5/5, anyone who grew up with good friends that eventually went the wrong direction in life or you were lucky enough to take the right direction will have trouble holding back tears at some parts. My only complaint was that the main character/writer of the story went a little too far by leaving that long, but he definitely had his reasons. I loved the opening line "Everyone in this movie, I left." Downey was terrific in a very understated performance, he barely said a few words but his face told the whole story. Chazz also took it down a notch and was great. I even bought Shia as a young Downey who I normally can't stand.Extremely depressing and that actor that walks in the room the last 30 seconds of the movie was a major turnoff just seeing his face, but like I said, if you grew up with close friends as a kid and some of them went the wrong way in life, you need to watch this movie.
wow, never heard of it but added and moved it to the top. edit: just checked out the trailer. Set in 1986, the year I started dating my wife (here in Queens)

A turning point for me after some less than proud moments.

Add to that some major headbutting between me and my late father and this might hit too close to home.

Surprised I never heard of it before.
Literally 1 of my 3 favorite movies of the last 3 years...cant knock 1 thing about itYou see LeBeaof in Indiana Jones and wonder how the hell he got the part, you watch a movie like this and realize hes got some talent.

The fact this movie is a true story makes it even that much more moving. I dont know how the last 30 seconds were a turnoff though. Eric Roberts was the perfect actor for the older Antonio, and that scene was pure brilliance. As was mentioned how it opens with Shia saying "Everyone in this movie, I left", the end where he dedicates the movie to Antonio is just as spine tingling.

Absolutely loved this movie, everyone and their father and their dog should watch this movie

Im back!, Back in NY Groove!...
This wasn't "my Queens" and it wasn't "my relationship with my father" but that didn't prevent it from putting a lump in my throat throughout. I still knew every character, still related to Dito as myself. Very powerful movie. It made me think of writing my story. Just random sht that happens to us all and affects us all.Really great movie, thanks for the recommendation.

X-Files I want to believe

Actually better than I thought. Pretty entertaining and not verys sci fi. Worth the rental.

Get Smart

It was alright, pretty predicatable and thought it was kind of funny. Best thing is Anne Hathaway is all kinds of hot in it.
