Recommendation for Shark Pool (1 Viewer)

Maybe this has been mentioned (since I rarely come up with good ideas first) or perhaps the wrong forum but here is an idea to improve the value of the Shark Pool and also help FBG get more value out of the site.

When an poster mentions a player name, have a way for it to automatically link to the player page on FBG. Facebook and other sites have this feature so if the poster is posting something about Greg Jennings enter their name as @Greg Jennings and this creates and automatic link to http://subscribers.footballguys.com/players/JennGr00-1.php. Not sure if this is technically feasible in the forums or maybe you can already do it but I don't see anyone applying it.

Yes, people can enter the link on their own (manually) but no one goes through that trouble and it sure would be cool if it was automated somehow? And of course people would need to type the name correctly but I think the posters that are adding the most value to the site would follow suit.

I would find auto-linking players helpful because people often cite stats or this year's production and I usually go reference the data.

It would also add more value for FBGs since sometimes I just enter the player into a google search instead of finding the player page on FBG so people would be using FBG more.

It's a great idea, but I think they use a third-party "engine" for their forum, like most places do. This forum is probably limited to the features offered by the content management system, so they can't add or change any drastic features like that.

Nevermind that not everyone subscribes for that info...

It's a simple algorithm for the most part. The only issue lies with same player names. I.e., Steve Smith, but you can also troll the rest of the page in that case and look for indicators like NYG, Giants, Manningham, Nicks on the rest of the page to increase accuracy. All in all, the algorithm would be pretty simple with a mysql hookup to the footballguys database. It may need some upkeep when same name players switch teams, but not too difficult.

Also, additional issues with times when users mention player last names, but not their first names and also use nicknames, but all in all, it's something that could be implemented in a day.

Why not do an ajax drop-down that suggests names when the user types @ followed by characters.Maybe even put it in the title area so we get less threads with titles like "Johnson out 4-6 weeks" or "ML47k to start this week".I love coming up with work for other people.
