Redskin WRs (1 Viewer)

Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly can probably be found on the waiver wire of most medium to small roster dynasty leagues. Any input from Skin-fans on either of these guys? Both have impressive size. Thomas has good speed for his build and the ability to make plays after the catch (not sure about his hands). Kelly is a huge target with long arms but has been battling knee injuries. I thought his game would translate quicker into the NFL more so than Thomas, but neither seemed to get much playing time for whatever reason.

I would gamble on Thomas if given the choice, but no real info backing up that decision. I can't see the Skins taking a bunch of receivers again this year, so I imagine they will work those two into the mix a little bit more in the offseason.

Any input from FBGers?

I've said elsewhere that the frustrating thing about both Kelly and Thomas (and Fred Davis, for that matter) is that we don't really know anything more about them now than we did when they were drafted. Here's a summary of each:

Thomas- very strong and athletic with good speed, but raw with only one year in D1 college ball, and needs to improve route running skills and knowledge of the game.

Kelly- an athletic and tall WR with good hands and strong leaping ability and some ability to get deep who is very polished as a route runner, but who has some questions about the health of his knee.

In limited action, both guys essentially proved their scouting reports- Kelly had some knee problems but was ahead of Thomas in training camp in terms of knowledge of the offense and being a polished route runner. Thomas got onto the field more due to Kelly's gimpy knees, but his limited understanding of a complex pro offense meant that the routes he could reliably run were limited.

Both look to me like they have NFL talent, but they both need time during the offseason to condition and get reps with Campbell. They're worth stashing on the end of your roster in deep leagues to watch. I'd look for news during the offseason that they're in Ashburn working with Campbell a lot, and during the preseason that they're making progress in the offseason. The team is begging for playmakers opposite Moss (Randle El should be used as a slot WR3 in the Wes Welker mold), so the opportunity for playing time is certainly there if one or both of them can seize it.

They'll draft a real wr this draft....
I am almost certain that the Redskins will not draft a WR this year. With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if they make a very hard push to bring in Houshmanzadeh, or Burress if he is released.Kelly is NFL-ready. Hell, he was pegged a starter in training camp opposite Moss until he knee flared up. If, and I admit, it is a big if, he gets his knee situation under control, he will be a nice player in this league. Like M. Walker, though, his NFL career could be derailed with knee problems.Thomas, not as ready to contribute from day 1, is still very much a work in progress. He was raw coming in, and has made some strides, but still has a long way to go before contributing on a game-to-game basis.

It was hinted at above, but there's no reason to believe any differently about these two than you did entering the season.

I was and still am high on Kelly and am willing to wait it out and see if he's able to overcome the knee issues.

I was and still am low on Thomas and never expect him to be a very productive player. If he ever wins a starting job I think he could put up WR3-like numbers, not the ceiling I'd want in a prospect.

I think Thomas will continue to play in a limited fashion as long as Moss is healthy and on the team. If Kelly makes it through camp healthy next year I think he starts opposite Moss.

Hopefully they don't bring in a WR in free agency...

Kelly's knee is a major concern to me and I was not all that impressed with him to begin with.

Thomas has huge upside and might be a great buy low. WRs often take time to develop. Thomas showed some playmaking ability late in the year. There is no question that he has talent, but he is still a project.

We do know that Jason Campbell is their QB and that doesn't bode well for any WR, imo.

If you listen to Vinny Cerrato's comments, the Redskins are committed to getting their rookies more involved with the team next year. This should definately apply to Thomas, Kelly, and Davis.

The word on Thomas is that he has had a lot of trouble digesting the playbook. Specifically, remembering where to line up in specific formation and plays. The Washington Post ran an article recently on Thomas's struggle to adapt to the NFL and how they spend only 1 rep on a play in a given week and then call the play 3 weeks laters and he is expected to remember where to line up and which route to run. If he can digest the playbook, he could be good.

For Kelly, it's a simple matter of the health of his knees. The Redskins love him and kept him on the roster all year rather than sending him to IR, hoping to get some games from him. He ended up inactive most weeks.

Davis is a mystery. The Redskins say they like him, yet he was inactive most weeks, behind Chris Cooley and Todd Yoder.

I remember reading recently on extremeskins that Kelly was planning on living in the DC area during the offseason so that he could be at the Skins facilities as often as possible while Thomas had "other commitments"...or something like that. I have no idea if that's true (Skins homers?), but I recall it not sitting too well with several fans that one guy appeared committed while the other guy that struggled so mightily to pick up the offense, wasn't. Again, not sure how accurate that is...just a little tidbit I picked up from doing some Redskins research.
