Redskins 2nd WR: Armstrong vs Galloway (1 Viewer)

Deep dynasty league which is why I'm curious, but did anyone watch that Redskins/Packers game? I only caught portions of it, was curious if they were finally using Amrstrong more than Galloway. Stats showed 7 targets and 3 reception for each of them, but obviously Armstrong did more with his touches.

Galloway should not be rostered in any league, and certainly not a dynasty. Armstrong is getting better. I don't think he will ever be a big time NFL player, but he is getting it done right now as a third option behind Moss and Cooley.

Armstrong. This is probably Galloway's last season. He isnt even mediocre at stretching the field anymore. Armstrong is on the rise and Donovan loves him.

I think they split time for the rest of the year. Galloway is still a tad faster. Armstrong may be the more athletic in terms of adjusting to the ball in the air, at this point in their respective careers

I wish they would make Fred Davis the third option. Why draft a receiving TE and not throw the ball his way? :coffee:

Many people didn't realize that Armstrong should have had back to back games with long TD passes. We all know how much McNabb loves his TE. McNabb also loves to throw the deep ball. Could be this year's DeSean Jackson his rookie season. Armstrong should have 2 TDs this year and that's one each vs Eagles and Packers secondary. I don't know about you but this kid looks very explosive off the line of scrimmage as evident in both of the highlights below. We'll see if this connection continues.

Here is the pass which McNabb threw too far towards the sideline in week 4. Still a nice throw and catch.

Here is the TD grab in week 5, nice Dougie at the end Anthony

Yeah he looks good but can he run routes? Both of those plays were straight line veritical routes. We'll see in week 6.

One thing that worries me is that all 3 of Armstrong's catches last week were in the 4th quarter. You'd really like to see a guy getting targets in the 1st and 2nd half, not when the game is on the line and they are desperate to find someone who can make a play. We'll have to see what happens but he's a risky start until he gets consistent.

His td catch wasn't last week wasn't a straight go route. He lined up with a short split on the right side, did an awesome fake outside which the db totally bit on, then went back inside on a post. If McNabb doesn't underthrow that ball he has the db beat by at least 5 yards in the endzone. His route running on that play was a thing of beauty. He runs very good routes from what I've seen of him. And Shanahan said this week that he'll be more involved in the offense from here on out.

I have the exact opposite view. If a player is targeted more in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line, that means his qb trusts him. I feel a lot better about someone like Armstrong who got most of his targets in the 2nd half during crunch time, than I do about a guy like James Jones who got all his catches in the first half and then Rodgers never looked at him again in the 2nd half.Another thing to keep in mind is that the Redskins offense was wretched in the 1st half last week. McNabb was under tremendous fire and getting killed whenever he dropped back. He didn't have any time to wait for his wr's running longer routes to develop.

Watching the YouTube vid he absolutely abused that DB who only recovered because Donnie under threw the pass. This guy could be a real nice depth add for teams that lost a guy like Clayton last week. I'm going to consider dumping my last WR for him.ETA: Heck, I'm not sure but it looks to me like he was interfered with on the reception as well - certainly could have been called as such - and still yanked it down. I'm impressed.

Ok, that sounds a little more promising. I didn't get to watch much of the game, so I wasn't sure why the targets were missing earlier in the game.

Honestly, on plays like that where the receiver undoubtedly makes the catch anyway (meaning it is not a close call where a review could possibly overturn it), I think the ref sometimes doesn't throw the flag, as that would just slow the game down a tad. But if the receiver drops the ball, then he would throw the flag.

Good point - agreed.Armstrong could be a decent play against a fairly depleted Colts D Sunday night for those needing some bye week help.

I caught a radio interview of him and they asked about that catch. He said that they recognized when the DB lined up outside of him and Moss/Galloway would clear the opposite side, he’d dig and cut and the move he put on the db had him turning even more outside. He had the whole mid section of the field for McNabb to get him the ball, and McNabb was money. When asked if he adjusted his pattern based on where the CB lined up, he said no. It was the same pattern regardless. They Skins adjust playcalling and if his happens to be the one that works, Donavon will find him. But with the newfound success, expect Donovan to look his way more often. The play calls will probably look to take advantage of his athleticism, and he seems like a late bloomer that is putting in the work and benefiting from the tutelage of savvy vets like Galloway. When asked who was faster, him or Galloway. He said he was faster, but he wouldn’t run the race because it takes too much work to prepare. That’s a subtle way to avoid the argument.

Another thing to note about Armstrong is while he's a rookie, he's a 27 year old rookie who played in the IFL. This isn't some kid - this is a guy who is hungry as hell and has made Shanahan and McNabb take notice.

Apparently he works his rear off, knows all three WR positions in the Skins offense and "loves" football. They cut Devin Thomas because he was a lazy undisciplined slacker who did not show proper passion for the game and finally found a guy who could be a legit #2 in Armstrong after all the searching and drafting.

I'll never dismiss a league like the IFL either as a developmental/alternate league for the NFL. Guys slip through the cracks for whatever reason and while most guys in those leagues have had their shot or were passed over for a reason, there's always going to be a few guys who can fall off the radar for different reasons and perhaps - I stress perhaps - Armstrong is one of them. We've seen more than one success story emerge from non NFL leagues. Warner's probably the greatest success story but he's not the only one.

Good point.

Armstrong started last week???

"Head Coach Mike Shanahan stated Armstrong should have a bigger role going forward, the Washington Post reports.

Recommendation: Armstrong started for the first time last week. He has been used primarily to stretch the field.

(Rotowire.com)"

And this news just came out. Here we go, Shanahan is doing it again. First Torain, now Armstrong???

"Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Friday that Joey Galloway may not start the team's Week 6 game against Indianapolis.

The alternative is Anthony Armstrong. Said Shanahan of Galloway: "He might not be the No. 2 receiver. We definitely got a No. 1 receiver. Last week, I think there was equally two No. 2 receivers. We'll see who it is this week." Shanahan also confirmed that Armstrong "is going to get a lot of playing time." Still, Santana Moss and Chris Cooley will continue to hog targets"

Shenanigans!

Seriously I see no way Shanahan keeps Armstrong down in favor of Galloway if he keeps this up.

His hands are pretty good and he fights for the ball.

Okay so different posts have stated that Armstrong

1. Is explosive off the line

2. Has great route running

3. Has great speed

4. Athletic

5. Strong hands

6. Good work ethic

7. Knows the offense

8. Competiting against Galloway for WR2 spot

9. 27 years old entering his prime

10. McNabb loves him

11. Shannahan effect

I'm confused. Where has this guy been? This guy sounds like a sleeper. This is the only post about him in the Shark Pool. What's going on?

Cool story that came out in the preseason. Guy seems hungry - I like that.

Armstrong excellingdespite thin resume

August 26, 2010 12:35 am

Anthony Armstrong has shown the Redskins he has good speed and good hands.

Wide receiver Anthony Armstrong scores Washington's first touchdown against the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 13.

BY RICH CAMPBELL

ASHBURN

--Like most players' paths to the NFL, Anthony Armstrong's began in the parking lot of The Jack Shack.

Wait, that's not right. Guys who play on second-tier minor league teams that practice outside a minor league hockey arena don't make it this far.

So how the heck was it that Armstrong walked off the Redskins Park practice field yesterday afternoon with a spot on the Washington Redskins' final roster almost in his grasp?

"That Robert Frost quote about the road less traveled? My road was off on the side that you can't even see," he said. "I literally was cutting through these woods and hacking down trees trying to get to this spot here."

Armstrong, 27, is the Redskins' feel-good story of the summer. With impressive speed, sharp route-running and good hands, he has separated himself from an otherwise pedestrian group of wide receivers in the team's most important position battle.

"I came in here and took the job and said, 'Who is that guy?'" new head coach Mike Shanahan said. "He has showed a lot of speed."

Armstrong would be your typical training camp longshot cliche if his story were a bit more believable. But really, it isn't.

PLAYING ON PARKING LOT

After graduating from West Texas A&M, a Division II school in the small town of Canyon, Texas, in 2004, Armstrong had to put his football career on hold to rehabilitate what he called a "yucky" right wrist injury he suffered as a senior. A fracture and torn ligaments required a cast.

Shortly after he got the cast removed, he tried out for the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent. He failed their physical because of his wrist, though, and spent 2005 away from the game.

"When I wasn't playing, I was grumpy and angry, probably damn near depressed," he said.

Armstrong called the Falcons for another shot after he got healthy, but they said they needed new game film of him to consider it. Great, Armstrong figured. He just needed game tape as quickly as he could get it.

One of Armstrong's college teammates was playing at the time for the Odessa Roughnecks in the Intense Football League--which no longer exists under that name--and helped him latch on to that team.

Armstrong recalled his stint with them yesterday with a hint of disbelief in his voice four years after the fact.

The Roughnecks play in the Ector County Coliseum, which is also home to the Odessa Jackalopes--hence "The Jack Shack"--of the Central Hockey League. Because the Roughnecks began practice while hockey was still in season, club organizers laid the 50-yard Astroturf football field in the parking lot of the arena.

"Cars would drive by honking," Armstrong said. "If you missed a pass, the ball would be in the streets. It was pretty crazy."

Armstrong showed off a scar on one hand where a piece of gravel had been removed.

"We had an overly excited linebacker knocking people down," he said.

He played in 13 games that season and scored 22 touchdowns. He earned $200 per game.

a BREAK, AND THEN A CUT

The following year, Armstrong made the big jump to Dallas. The Desperados, that is.

He got their attention by running a 4.25-second 40-yard dash at an Arena Football League tryout. The Falcons weren't interested in him anymore, so he figured this was the next step.

He began 2007 on the Desperados' practice squad. He eventually made the active roster, but he injured his hamstring and was placed on injured reserve. Meanwhile, he got a job selling jewelry to pay the bills. He would report to work after practice.

He earned his break with a successful 2008 season. The Miami Dolphins tried him out just before training camp and gave him a roster spot for the summer.

In a cruel twist about a month later, though, Armstrong thought on cut day that he made the team.

"Nobody called me and said I was cut," he said. "I thought, 'I guess I made it.' I picked up my playbook for the week playing against the Jets, and then they were like, 'We're gonna cut you, but we're gonna put you on practice squad.'"

That was as close as Armstrong got until now. After the Dolphins cut him last summer, Redskins director of pro personnel Morocco Brown signed Armstrong to Washington's practice squad in later October.

During all the turmoil here at the end of last season, Armstrong would go about his business anonymously in the locker room while reporters flocked to prominent players in search of insight about the franchise's undoing.

'we've got a good player'

Less than a year later, Armstrong is now positioned to make the team. It has helped that the group of receivers currently on the roster lacks a bona fide threat other than Santana Moss.

Still, Armstrong is earning a spot by making plays.

"You could see on tape right when you see him: You had a talented guy, a guy who can run and is fast and also has the quick twitch to get in and out of breaks," offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. "He has the hands. He's got everything it takes to be a receiver.

"You wonder when a guy has never had a career catch in the regular season--what's the deal? We wanted to get him under the lights, and he hasn't flinched at all. He's been the same at practice, so you can tell we've got a good player."

Armstrong's brightest moment of the preseason was his 4-yard touchdown catch two weeks ago against Buffalo.

On third-and-goal from the 4, quarterback Donovan McNabb hurried a throw over the middle to beat the blitz. Armstrong used his 5-11, 185-pound frame to shield the defender and make the catch at the goal line. He lunged for his first touchdown in an outdoor league since college.

Armstrong was so psyched that the ball slipped out of his hand when he wound up to spike it.

"It was super cool," he said. "I was overly excited. I was having the time of my life just being able to get in that end zone."

He followed it up with four catches for 84 yards last week against Baltimore.

He showed in that game an impressive ability to adjust to throws. He slowed down and slid to haul in an underthrown deep ball from McNabb for a 45-yard completion, and he also reached to snare a slant pass that McNabb threw behind him.

"He's one of those guys that's fast as hell," Moss said. "He runs great routes. You can sense that he's coming into his own right now."

Armstrong can, too, but he realizes that he still has to prove himself in two more preseason games and a week of practice.

But considering how far he's come from The Jack Shack parking lot, he's ready to take the final step.

"I know I've come a long way," he said, "but I'm still hacking right now."

So I looked up Washington's target summary. And I saw that so far he has a pedestrian 17 targets. But then things got interesting when I looked up their redzone target summary. And guess what? Armstrong has 3 redzone targets so far. Moss and Cooley also has 3. Quite interesting.

On the Redskin's offense. Through week 5 ranked 24th in points per game with only 4 passing TDs. Their red zone offense is particularly bad. He's not consistent yet either. A couple weeks ago he was targeted twice in a row on a fade to the corner of the end zone and missed both, one he could have caught and the other he should have caught. Also competing with Moss and Cooley for targets. He'll have maybe a couple games this year of 100/1 but I'd expect <50/0 for most of them. He has some upside if the Redskins can figure their offense out but I wouldn't expect that to happen this year.

McNabb has done more with a lot lesser WR's. He has the confidence in Shanny and McNabb, and if he has the ability to get open McNabb will find him. Washington has to throw the ball to win games. McNabb is averaging 34 attempts for 263 yards through the air per game, so there is plenty to go around.

It seems that every year I miss out on the WW pickup for the "safer" option instead of the guy that seemed to just have a big game. I'm not saying that he's going to be the pickup of the year, but he has shown the talent and I like his situation. Like I said, it's very likely that he's not the guy to pickup, but as many of us have learned in the past it's worth taking a risk on a guy like Armstrong if you have the roster spot.

He got what? Twice (?), three times (?) the offensive snaps that Galloway got last week. He was a guy that showed me something in the preseason, and I've kept him rostered since. All the athletic, fights for the ball, speed comments have seemed obvious for a while now. If he's not been rostered in 12+ team start 3 or more WR leagues, be thankfull that your leaguemates are asleep at the wheel.

Umm, he got 62 snaps last week, while Galloway got 61 (out of 80 offensive plays). They used alot more 3WR sets than usual.

I predicted in preseason that he'd be starting for the Redskins. He's their second-best WR. Prior to being with the Skins he was cut by multiple teams, and he said in preseason that he refused to let another team cut him.

Just wanted to add that last game Armstrong had 1 solo tackle and 2 assists on special teams. I've never really given any thought to offensive players that may be on kick coverage getting tackles, and I wonder whether this will continue now that he's a starter, but that was worth 2pts in my league, and if consistent, could give his fantasy points that little bit of extra padding.

Armstrong looks like he's worth a pickup. McNabb made Pinkston rosterable. Armstrong looks to be a better version of Pinky.
