Reggie Bush or Kevin Smith going forward (1 Viewer)

Reggie Bush is getting increased opportunities over the past few weeks and while he has found the end zone four times in three games, he really hasn't been very impressive

29 carries for 79 yards against 2 middle of the road defenses in the past two weeks to go with 8 catches for 38 yards.

I feel like if I pick him up, he reverts to old Reggie.

Kevin Smith looked fresh, but it was against a pathetic run defense.

Just not sure if either of these guys are worth rostering in my league, which features very odd scoring. For instance, Bush in the 139rd rated player in my league. We have 11 teams (total points), with only 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE required starters - but potential to start SIX flex players.

I don't want to turn this into an assistant coach question, but just an evaluation of Bush and Smith going forward.

I feel like it's Smith. There was a thread a while back trying to determine who was going to be the WW pickup of the year, and Smith could possibly fit the bill. Bush has looked very good recently--even running strong up the middle--but It just looks like Smith matches what Detroit wants to do. Best is still having post-concussion symptoms, and will likely be out until week 13 at the very earliest, so the lions need a back that can both knock out yards at a decent YPC and also catch well out of the backfield - both of which Smith has been able to do during the healthy part of his NFL career. I wouldn't want to drop either, but I have a good feeling about Smith going forward. Also, the Lions remaining schedule is filled with good offenses paired with struggling defenses, which should lead to a RB that is around a lot of TDs being scored.

Remaining schedules (up to week 17 for those that go that far):

Detroit- Packers, @Saints, Vikes, @Oakland, Chargers, @Packers.

Miami- @Dallas, Oakland, Philly, @Buffalo, @Pats, Jets.

Chances are it'll be cold and somewhat inclement come weeks 15/16 for Reggie ...and he's not quite the guy one lines up in a snowstorm to pound it 30 times. A healthier Thomas more of a factor?

Outside of that, looks like both have very decent matchups going forward.

Might give the slight edge to Smith for the 4 games on the carpet

IMO, If you need reliability/consistency (for the rest of this season), go with Bush-if you want the possible "stretch-run stud," go with Smith.

Is Thomas out or something? Regardless of how Bush has played, I would expect Miami to at least split carries with Thomas as long as he's healthy. IF Best comes back the same with Smith in Detroit. But since Best is out for what seems to be turning in to a while, I would go with Smith.

That will change as soon as Best returns. The million dollar question is when does Best return. Reggie Bush has been shocking me with his productivity. I think he is a keeper for real this time.

Even if Best comes back, it will be another 2-4 weeks for him to get into the featured role again. See Austin Collie.. I got a feeling Smith will be given all the opportunity to shine.

This sounds about right. Easy to point to Bush's last couple games but even those numbers are better than Thomas. Miami oline is doing nothing...there is nothing to be had up the middle the last few games. But Reggie is still expanding the role and they will find ways to get him the kind of touches in the red zone that Thomas won't get, so the TD's will continue as long as Moore continues to improve. That said, I would take Smith in that offense all day over Bush...especially with the next two Lion games probable shoot outs(GB, NO).

I really don't think Best will play this year. They are really going to be careful with the concussion thing. I know it's different sports but it took both Crosby & Morneau a ton of time to get back to playing. I doubt they risk Best this year. Hope I'm wrong though as I think the Lions would be tough with Best back in there..hijack over.

It's going to depend on scoring systems. Doesn't it always?

However, I'd lean toward Smith. Best has a number of hurdles to clear. Being back at practice was one hurdle. Sidney Crosby of the Penguins at one point could not read, drive, or watch videos. Anything requiring focus during movement was too much to handle. Of course, every concussion is different, but seeing that Jahvid was not at practice and now is attending leads me to think he was having symptoms that were exacerbated by attending practice.

Concussions aren't treated any more like they were years ago, where the head was almost like a knee or ankle, where once you're cleared, you can go as much as pain allows. First, Best will be cleared for light exercise. After days or possibly weeks of exercise, he'll be evaluated with respect to contact. Unless the Lions are hiding Best's progress, he is still several weeks away. The emergence of Smith allows the Lions to be even more patient, although chances are they were not going to rush Best back regardless.

I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again. but I'm guessing that the odds are very low that Best gets a significant number of touches before the playoffs or possibly Week 17 as a tune up. And logically, if Best does return, Smith should see all of the short yardage and goal line work. I would expect that the last thing a person with concussion risk needs to do is lower their head into a swarm of tacklers on 3rd and 1.
