Gumbel to miss Thursday's Broncos-Texans broadcast

NFL Network play-by-play announcer Bryant Gumbel is suffering from a sore throat and will be replaced by Tom Hammond for Thursday's Broncos-Texans broadcast at Reliant Stadium, a network spokesman said Tuesday.

Hammond will join Cris Collinsworth, with whom he called a playoff game last year for NBC, for the NFL Network broadcast, said network spokesman Seth Palansky.

Gumbel, meanwhile, will rest up for the network's Saturday night game between the Bengals and 49ers. He will work the game with Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk as Collinsworth prepares for his Sunday job on NBC's Football Night in America.

This is the second time in as many seasons that NFL Network has had to shuffle announcer lineups because of illness. Last December, analyst **** Vermeil was unable to work the second half of a Cowboys-Falcons game because of throat problems and was replaced by Sanders and Faulk.

That's too bad. It was nice having a play by play guy talk about the game. Eventhough he stumbles a bit with the subtleties of the game, he does a better job than the guys that talk non stop about the NFL issues and gossip. There is a game going on.
