Relo to L.A. - Neighborhood Advise Needed (1 Viewer)

traffic is intense, but i am figuring things out. definitely decided to buy and i dont really mind the 210 corridor from what i have seen. got an app called sigalert to check traffic and while the 210 w in the morning seems sluggish, it seems a 605 s to 10 w may work for my wife as she gets to 710/valley. right now, my employer has an office at lake and the 210, so i could conceivably take the metro if they let me transport my job and the gold line is being extended. i just dont get the homes in the area.....alot of older that seem as if they have never been updated. we likely will have to guy kitchen and bathrooms from i have seen. i can get a 7/1 arm at 3.5 no points at the worst and my employer can likely beat that while i am employed. went to a place called cha cha chili in alhambra last nite, korean messican bbq fusion. tomorrow, angels game. i dont see cornholers lining up yet.

That's what I was trying to get at when I was questioning what you'd get for $400k around here.

Also, I've had my inlaws staying over all week, and now I'm getting ready to head out of town for vacation, so we'll have to meet up when you move into your fabulous new digs.

Also, if you're in Alhambra, hit up Twohey's for hot fudge sundaes - I prefer the bittersweet, but the milk chocolate is also good.

Fosselman's somewhat close to where your wife will be working has great ice cream also.

How was this? Always drive by it but never been.

Never had the sundae's at Twohey's but I hate it...the food sucks.

Fosselman's ice cream is good. So is the Fair Oaks Pharmacy in South Pasadena.

Grill 'em All is good. Also on Main St. is 38 Degrees - lots of beer choices and really good food. Across the street is Gen Korean BBQ - all you can eat for $20. Can't beat it. Savoy Kitchen on Valley near Garfield is really good also. And can't talk about Valley/Garfield w/o mentioning The Hat and pastrami sandwiches.

There's a Hat down in OC too - good stuff.

Thinking of movin' back to OC, speaking of which. I can't even believe the rent prices. :moneybag: :moneybag: :moneybag:

i really loved cha cha chili. cool atmosphere, lots of reasonably priced options. attentive service eventhough its not waited tables.

highly recommend. went to pita jungle tonite on Colorado and the cilantro hummus topped with pico is high on my list.

The sundaes are the main reason to go there (though I do like their take on clam chowder). The shark move is to get burgers at the In n' Out right next store then have sundaes at Twohey's.

i am at the sheraton and free tomorrow.....i will PM my cell.

from more feedback, we have eliminated azusa and are focusing on altadena, monrovia, duarte and glendora.

would love so pasadena and eagle rock, glendale, but these seem out of reach.

and to the young lady in the room adjacent to mine, i appreciate the enthusiasm.

taking a traffic break and I had this thought, is it better to know mandarin, cantonese or spanish to live in this area? obviously, English isn't going to hack it. at times, I feel like I am in a different country, one that is indistinguishable by the surroundings. reminds me a lot of queens n.y., which will help the adjustment. feels very much like Jamaica, NY or a stop along the 7 line. great food options. when siracha is a condiment, that's a good thing.

I don't want to say that you can never learn Cantonese. But you can never learn Cantonese. It can't be done. Unless you're Mormon, then it CAN be done.

ok, so a 1/2 way update on my 13 nite hotel stay....

went with the wife and an agent to see some homes yesterday. opened the budget to 450k. we stuck to glendora, duarte and san dimas. apparently, there must be an ordinance that you were not allowed to update any part of the house if it was built prior to 1970. these houses were simply brutal. luckily we are not tied to any agent right now and possibly a change there will help. the properties had functional land, but on any given block you might find nice homes and homes in complete disarray and disrepair. some of the homes were simple flips and I am not buying a bandaid so to speak. I think a key is buying a home from a home owner, one they occupied, not off rental or simply bought to flip. we may go down to a 2/1 to hit a nice neighborhood. it is amazing though that in the 1950s no one had clothes or belongings, because there is no storage or closet space and everyone shared a bathroom. we kind of expected some pressure at our budget, but we just need to hustle a bit more and really stick to locale. no matter how nice a home is, if the location is crap, we won't buy. so, focus in on the right area and be flexible with budget and size.

our eats in the area have been;

noor's indian - monrovia

settebello - 2x pasadena

pita jungle - pasadena

enterprise fish co - Santa Monica

rubio's - pasadena

cha cha chili - alhambra

panera - pasadena

trying to work in an in and out stop. maybe twoheys. thinking peach cafe if they have dinner.
