Rental Car Fun (1 Viewer)

i recently rented a car from Sixt (a Volvo) at the San Francisco airport.   I had it for 9 days and drove it quite a bit visiting Yosemite and some family in the very northern part of the state.  I returned it on Sunday with no damage.  The attendant walked around the car and examined it fairly closely, got the mileage and gave me the bill saying everything was ok.

Now, three days later, I get an email asking me to file an accident report noting damage to the wheel rim and 'tyre' on the front driver side.  The pictures match my car, but now the wheel is all scrapped up and the tire is noticeably damaged.  There was no way we could have missed that as it was sunny and nice out when we examined the car upon the return.

I do have a picture of the car during  my trip and the wheel was just fine.   So I filed their report saying there was no accident, the car was inspected upon the return and no damage was found.  The damage absolutely did not happen during my rental period.

So far all they have charged me for was the agreed to rental fee.  I put the rental on a debit card and have removed most of the money from that account and have no overdraft option.

Right now just waiting, but not sure what to expect.  Sixt has some bad reviews on line, but most of the fraudualant damage claims have been in Europe. No real issues noted in San Fran.

I am speculating one of their workers was recklace with the car and ran into a curb when they were taking it to get cleaned or something and did not want to take the blame.

I know, I should have taken pictures/video before I rented and after I returned, but I have rented a hundred cars without issue.

Your first mistake was paying for anything big ticket with a debit card.  And once the attendant signs off when you return, doesn't that mean they agreed there was no damage?

I hope it means that.   Perhaps this email was just a fishing attempt to see if I would admit to damaging the car.  So far everything is OK, but I expect they will attempt to collect even though they are not in a great position.

I can't remember exactly, do they give you any kind of receipt or anything when you drop the car off?  Showing final charges and whatnot?

They did it by email and I recieved a final bill with no extra charges and it has been processed.  As I said above, I think this is a fishing attempt to get me to admit I damaged the car as they have no proof.  Unfortunately the girl who checked out the car will probably get the blame when in reality she did her job and did in fact inspect the car fairly good.  It was probably some yahoo kid cleaning the car or something who jacked it up and did not report it.

Yea, good luck regardless I think you'll be ok.

I think its only fair that if you say 'tyre', you should have also said 'fraudualant' and 'recklace'.

Not familiar with this company, but usually when the attendant signs off on it, you're free and clear after that.  I see it the same way as when you walk around the rental car with the attendant when you get it.  You accept it as it is and sign off for its use.

Sixt? I've honestly never seen them before and I travel a 3 or 4 times a year ( not claiming to be a Chet-ish jetsetter).

Try Hertz or Alamo next time as I've never experienced any ####ery from them.

The only time this is an issue is if you drop off after hours and there isn't someone to check it. Every time I've done that or have seen it offered, they're clear about the possibility of additional charges for damage.

Here though, you have a situation where they literally have a process to check the car when you return it and they followed their own process and gave you an "all clear". You will never have an easier time telling someone to GTFO.

Id probably call the bank and tell them you dont authorize any payments to Sixt (other than the original)

Avis tried to nail me with some 450.00 damage.  Turned a rental in at Fort Myers airport in Florida. Waited in line and the vehicle was given a clean bill.  A month later I get the same type of bill saying left front had some impact damage,  I never hit anything.  Said I was not paying anything as my car was inspected. E-mailed them a copy of my final receipt and never heard from them again.   They probably net quite a bit of income from people who just pay it because they are afraid there are going to get in trouble or credit will be ruined if the don`t pay.

A few years before I had a brand new Ultima and backed into a pole in Naples FL the first day.  Put a huge dent in the trunk.  When I was in line to get the car inspected I thought this one is going to be costly.   It was really busy at the airport and they were saying "Open your doors and pop the trunk"  When the trunk was popped you could not see where it was damaged... I and got a clean bill.  Never heard from them.

It wasnt the spelling per se. It was more like the 250lb lady calling the 240lb lady a fat ###.
