Ricky Williams, RB MIA

News: Ricky Williams, who the Dolphins could probably use the services of right now with Ronnie Brown out for the year with a torn ACL, is still waiting for the NFL to make a decision on his reinstatement. According to the Miami Herald, Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, said Monday night, "It wouldn't surprised me if it happened this week, and it wouldn't surprise me if it happened next week." Williams has been working out regularly and is close to his playing weight.

Analysis: Williams might be picked up in a few leagues over the next few weeks, so if you're in need of some help at the RB position and have a spare roster spot available, you might want to grab him before the NFL does reinstate him and Fantasy owners start scrambling for his services. Miami plays the Giants in London in Week 8, and have their bye in Week 9.

Is Williams even a viable option? I am going to use my waiver claim to pick up Chatman but with this news is there any chance that Williams will be any fantasy use or is Chatman the go to guy?

I just don't see RW playing a lot in MIA. They're 0-7 and if anything the rest of the year will be a tryout for '08. I could see them trading RW perhaps for draft picks if anyone was willing to bite.

The one reason I could see them using Ricky is to showcase what he can do and pump up his trade value. But this can only happen if he his reinstated which I don't see happening until right at the end of the season.

my thoughts exactly.
They could also use him at the beginning of next year though. With RB blowing the knee in the 7th week he will not likely be ready till after the season starts in 08.

We're past any trade deadlines...so Ricky isn't going anywhere THIS season. So why not use the crap outta him before he tokes up again.

I think he can still be traded, but he has to pass through waivers (or something like that. It happened to Deion a while back.)

Why would Miami waive him now?Makes no sense. Right now he's worth something. Bring him in. Make him look good for a few games. Set it up where you can get picks after trading reopens. Get the picks. He's worth nothing if you don't use him to show he's in football shape. He's worth nothing if you simply waive him. Miami is stockpiling picks to rebuild...and just waiving a guy that could help at the RB position when you've lost your star...well that just compounds the dumb.

No, I don't mean waive him. They can trade him away if he were to pass through waivers.I was just responding to your point that we are past any trade deadlines. There is a way to do it. Likely? I am not sure.

Bring him in, have him play a few games. Keep him on the roster till training camp next year. When someone blows out a knee ask for a 4th rounder for Ricky

Are we saying that a guy that hasn't played in a couple years is going to just step back on the field and play? Especially considering he left to go get high?

I'm just not seeing it.

He's 30 years old and has been out of the NFL for the majority of the past 3 years. He did virtually nothing in the CFL. I can't see him making any kind of impact whatsoever.

New from Rotoworld:

ESPN's John Clayton believes that Ricky Williams will be reinstated within the next two weeks.

Williams' agent Leigh Steinburg also believes Williams is close to hearing from the league. Chris Mortensen said otherwise Monday, but it looks like Ricky is close. We suspect the Dolphins will cut or traded. On paper, Denver and Tampa Bay could show some interest.

That's what Chatman is doing and he never was a great back to begin with like Ricky. So, it is possible, although I wouldn't think it likely if RB were still playing and healthy. But since he isn't, why NOT show case RW to drive up his value and an off season trade? It sort of makes sense. Chatman is not the future and they aren't really trying to win now or you don't trade Chambers. Cam has stated that Booker is a change of pace back, so I don't they see him as a featured back for the future. The big unknown is the league, which may not reinstate him or which may not do it until late in the season.

Ricky decision coming soon?

Ricky Williams - RB - MIA - Oct. 26 - 11:29 am et

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell plans to review Ricky Williams' request for reinstatement after he returns from London for Sunday's Giants-Dolphins game.

Goodell will get a recommendation from the doctor who heads the league's substance abuse program. He has until November 30 to decide on Williams' eligibility, but the general belief is that Ricky will hear back shortly. Dolphins coach Cam Cameron has yet to comment on Williams' situation. The idea of putting some of the wear and tear on Ricky as opposed to your other RB's in what is clearly a lost season for the Dolphins makes a lot of sense.

Guy broke his leg the third game in. That may be why he did virtually nothing in the CFL.

Might work out nicely for me. Ricky will start playing just in time for Travis to take HIS year off.

Then I'll have the coolest RBs ever, Priest Holmes and Ricky Williams.

Well, okay, maybe 4 years ago that would have been a cool tandem.

has anyone really picked up ricky?just curious.
Grabbed him in the second to last round in an initial dynasty draft in a very deep league (12 teams with 26 roster spots). Still on my squad. NEver really had a reason to drop him. :goodposting: Just left him on the roster to see what happens...

Just wondering, I know Goodell said he was going to review this this week, but I have not heard or seen anything since. Does anyone have any news or rumors they have heard. Any chance we see Ricky this year. I am excited to hear the news now that Brown is out for the year. The Fins could really use him and so could my team since I have him sitting on my bench since Brown went down.

if the dolphins take him back its basically like a guy hooking up with a girl that cheated on him and called him ugly just because theyre on a bit of a cold streak or something...all Ricky can do is improve their draft pick and hurt their team even more than he already has

I'm guessing you mean hurt their draft pick, but either way do people think Ricky will be showing up or is it the "In Gado We Trust" show.

Yeah he's never proven he can take a year off from football and come back productive.
He came back after the first suspension in week 6 and by the end of the year he had (IMO) won the starting job back from RB. I'm pretty sure he went over 200 in two games.

and he would get 8 - 15 carries max a gameRW needs 20+ to be fully effective

I hope he gets einstated and Miami keeps him on the roster. We need drat picks and someone will cough one up for RW (even if it is a low pick)

I think Chatman is filling in just fine for Ronnie Brown. Ricky hasn't played in a long time, and he is older now. As someone said, he could be used for a draft pick maybe, but as far as making a significant impact now, I don't see him doing that.

Not cool.

Ricky's definitely in game shape. He's been playing pickup football on Sundays in Belmont, MA.

From the BostonHerald:

A little birdie tells me that Ricky Williams is finishing his rehab at a certain Belmont hospital and has been seen down at Belmont High track working out

anyone who has followed ricky's career knows that he always keeps himself in shape. it has never been an issue

He hasn't played in the NFL since 2005 and hasn't gotten any younger, therefore it is a concern.

It's past the trading deadline.
i think he was referring to an offseason tradelet ricky play the last 6 games or so, showcase his talent, let him have a few 100 yd games, then trade him
The Dolphins don't need to showcase Ricky Williams. Teams know what he brings. Cameron likes Chatman, and I don't see him putting him to the side, so they can showcase a player that has screwed them more than once. Chatman has played well, and he has earned his playing time. Ricky has earned nothing recently, except a reputation as being a high liability.

Not cool.
What's not cool about this? The guy is excited to hear news about RW because Brown is out for the year. I don't think he's excited about Brown's injury.

There is a certain hospital in Belmont that a psychiatric/substance abuse rehab facility. It is called McLean Hospital.

 Exactly, thanks. Just excited to hear the news on RW.

This is all pretty funny. If the Dolphins don't want him, who else would? Do you guys think that any team out there is seriously stupid enough to make a trade with the Dolphins and give up a draft pick to get Williams for 2008? Who cares if he does OK for a few games this year? Did the NFL suddenly forget that he got suspended after his short stint a couple years ago after his first retirement and suspension? Did the NFL not go through the Vick scandal and Pacman and Chris Henry suspensions? Denver is on the verge of losing a guy they just signed this offseason to a full year suspension.

I can't believe that people even entertain the idea that Williams might actually garner a draft pick of any sort from any NFL team being 30+, being a couple years removed from the game and being one more toke away from being suspended.

As far as I can tell, Steinberg and Williams keep dragging this out because they don't want to retire and have the Dolphins make an attempt at his bonus money from a while back. Didn't the whole bonus money talk go away when he came back before? Maybe Miami can't ever go after it anymore, but if they can, that would be my thought as to why Williams keeps this dragging out. If they cut him when back from suspension then they finally put the nail in that coffin.

Agent expects news on Ricky's suspension 'any day'

By Tim Graham

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

The agent for suspended Dolphins running back Ricky Williams expects the NFL to rule "any day" on his application for reinstatement.

There were rumblings over the weekend that the league would not let Williams play this year, but agent Leigh Steinberg said he and his client are optimistic.

Williams is serving a suspension that dates back to April 2006, when he violated the NFL substance-abuse policy for the fourth time. He subsequently failed a drug test during his treatment.

Williams, the Dolphins' former rushing leader, filed for reinstatement Oct. 1.

"I expect to hear any day," Steinberg said.

Williams this summer completed four months of NFL-mandated therapy at a Boston facility. The clinical report of his rehabilitation, believed to be favorable, was forwarded to the league.

"Ricky is emotionally and physically in great shape," Steinberg said. "He's upbeat. The dedication and focus that he exhibited this last summer should result in his return to play in the NFL.

"The NFL's substance-abuse program is designed to be rehabilitative, not punitive, and it would be a major victory for the NFL policy to have a healthy Ricky Williams back on the playing field." ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported over the weekend that the NFL likely would not approve Williams' return because of a difference in opinion regarding treatment of Williams' social-anxiety disorder.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday "there has been no decision on Ricky Williams' petition for reinstatement. It continues to be under review." Steinberg insisted he wasn't aware of any such disagreement within the league but didn't deny that there could be.

"The status of a player in the substance-abuse program and deliberations and reports of doctors are supposed to be strictly confidential," Steinberg said.

The substance-abuse policy states that once a suspended player applies for reinstatement, NFL doctors have 45 days to submit a recommendation to the commissioner. The commissioner then has 15 days to render a decision.

When the Dolphins were in London to play the New York Giants on Oct. 28, an NFL spokesman said Commissioner Roger Goodell - who attended the game - would begin to review the case when he returned stateside.

Steinberg said he has been in regular contact with the Dolphins' front office but claimed no insight as to whether the club would welcome back Williams, who led the league with 1,853 rushing yards in 2002. The Dolphins have said they would not comment on his possible return while he remains suspended.

Williams, who turned 30 in May, is living in Boston with his fiancee. If he were reinstated, the Dolphins' only options would be to keep him or waive him because the trade deadline has passed.

"Ricky is hopeful and excited about the prospect of playing again," Steinberg said. "Ricky never lost his love for playing football."

I could really use a miracle, but I will bet against Ricky Williams being it. Would have more juice if this was before the trade deadline...

Of note is that the Dolphins just picked up Gado prior to the London game. Not a good sign, it seems.
