Right of Way on a Sidewalk (1 Viewer)

I would think if you see somebody just about to enter the crosswalk while running, you let them go... right IS?

these guys popping out from behind a building are dopes. but a person or people running down the sidewalk about to cross that you can... you going to cut them off because they haven't stepped into the sidewalk yet? or are you going to let them go?
Yes. Depending on what part of town I run into the group, the intersections can vary. If I pull up and I can see them, I will stop and let them go, now, because I know they don't plan on stopping. If I am already stopped and I see them coming, but I can get out ahead of them, I will go. Sometimes, this causes them to have to slow down, but I'm not going to sit there and wait for them to get to the intersection. Kind of a judgement call there.

My issue is a two of the intersections I encounter them, there is a building on the corner. That building is on my right side. They run from that side and I have no way of seeing them until they pop out, but by then, their second step is into the street. I don't want to hit anyone with my car and I'd feel terrible if I hurt someone. But I feel like one day I'm going to end up hitting one of these nuts because they run like they are the only people on Earth.

It's very strange. I just don't understand how you could blindly run into the street without worrying about someone plowing into you.

gotcha- they're dopes.

or... you have a hair-trigger for people you consider to be self-entitled about things that get between you and your car.

big ;)

I'm really actually a courteous driver. You'd just never know it between the runner threads and biker threads.

of course you are

When I'm running I move out of the way for everybody unless they do it first. I'm out there getting exercise. Why do I care if I have to veer 5ft?

If a car is stopped, driver is looking left, and I'm coming up on their right, I just cross the road behind their car unless I'm absolutely sure they've seen me.
:goodposting:

To be honest, the biggest reason I get out of everyone's way is that if I'm out running, I'm running with my dog. When there isn't a sidewalk, I'm on the side of the road and my dog is on my left to be further away from the cars. Since that's the side she's comfortable on, it makes it tough to stay to the right when we're on the sidewalk and someone's coming the other way. It's much easier for me (and I'm sure more comfortable for the other person) if I just get off the sidewalk with her for the quick stretch.

I really do need to run more. The snow's finally starting to melt, so fewer excuses...

I usually run in socks.. better for feet

and electrical tape on nipples
You chaffed nipple people are a different breed. I watched my wife run the NYC marathon. As we closed in on the end, I almost had to stop watching because of all the guys with bloody nipples.

Any hobby or activity stops being fun when my nipples bleed.
yup, same thing happens in the pants. I usually run with a magnum
Jesus. What are you guys wearing to run? Burlap shorts?

Concrete is terrible for the knees. Asphalt is much better.
Huge myth. Both are the same from that point of view.
It's not a myth. Concrete is harder than asphalt. Not that I recommend running on asphalt, either. If you must run, find a trail made of dirt.
You wrote "much better". Concrete and asphalt are both so hard, the minor difference is irrelevant for practical purposes. Obviously, trails and school tracks are much better but they aren't as readily available for most people.
I said much better, and I stand by that. I have been running 20-40 miles a week for the last 20 years, so I can speak with some authority.
First of all, if running mileage gives "authority" in this discussion, you're not unique in this thread.

But don't take my word for it. Do a google search on the topic and read for yourself.
OK,

Purely anecdotally but based on my own personal experience, for me, asphalt is much better than concrete. That make you happy?
I can run you through the math that goes into why there is no practical difference between concrete and asphalt (I'm a materials engineer and test things for a living). Now the concrete you run on may be slanted, very rough, or have some other characteristic that makes is "feel worse".

I also agree that dirt is a lot easier on the knees.

I usually just try to stay out of people's way, unless they are in a group walking side by side, and then I stop, act like I never saw them, and make them walk around or go single file. If it's a group of 3 or more, I try to take up as much room as possible.
