RIP Mike Heimerdinger (1 Viewer)

Sad. I remember recently he continued to coach for a while after the diagnosis. Very popular guy amongst his players. R.I.P.

That's going to affect some Broncos probably, but I can't imagine the Titans keeping it together this week.

He was arguably the best OC at creating mismatches. He made it seems so easy. He could set anyone up to make a play...anyone. The Titans (and Broncos when he was there) didn't exactly have players that we got excited over in FF and still he would do anything and everything creatively to put them in a position to make a play. Pick the slowest, worst player...geesh he could probably make a play for a big slow OL to catch the ball downfield.

There's always been a lot with Dinger manipulating mismatches where I felt BB used a similar mindset for his entire team. I always wanted to see him be a HC. He knew every tendency and whatever he didn't he was about to research and learn anyway.

He did interview for the job Munchak currently has. Some thought he deserved it and would get it. Munchak blew them away in interviews, but Dinger was the early favorite. Its uncomfy, but we really could have an NFL coach passing away here.

Vince Young's career dopiest move was not listening to Dinger and/or tuning him out. Watch all the love Dinger gets the next week or so and then realize VY actually tuned this guy out. It's beyond being an arrogant know it all. Anyhow, there's stories of Dinger persisting with Vince until Fisher finally came down on VY. He tried everything to get through to that kid over the years.

Dinger was the throwback type that was always watching film and "at the office." I remember reading how he was diagnosed with cancer, hid it from everyone initially and then when he got a diagnosis that it had progressed a bunch, he wanted to simply move up to the booth and continue as always. His family initially called the Titans insisting they almost force him to take a break and sadly everyone seemed to realize Mike just wouldn't do that. He wasn't "made that way."

A few months back, maybe six, Munchak had trouble coming to grips with Dinger not being his OC. It had to be done. It was time for a new regime and Dinger's health was an issue even if he wouldn't admit it was.

Unfairly, Dinger often took blame as the Titans OC for a poor performance while everyone ignored the little elite talent they had. He very much made something out of nothing. We have threads on drops by Titans WRs. We have threads here mocking Roydell Williams, Courtney Roby and some other WRs the Titans picked. Kerry Collins and VY have a zillion threads here how they stink. Scaife is nothing special threads. Erron Kinney was supposedly a great pick many years ago for FF. Travis Henry, Lendale White, Chris Henry and a slew of other RBs all have just tons of threads bashing them. Derrick Mason was too old. Kevin Dyson was a one-trick pony. Drew Bennett was a product of a system and not good(true) with St. Louis. Dinger was the OC of a Superbowl team and a team that went 13-3 not too long ago. How on earth do you add up all the threads here mocking players and NOT think he was fabulous at putting players in position to succeed?

God Bless, RIP.

The guy never got his due and it seems quite literally worked himself to death for his team. If that dedication doesn't make you misty-eyed nothing will.

Great Post.. This is the guy that even when he was diagnosed, delayed treatment to work with the rookie QB Rusty Smith and to prepare for the Titans next game.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5849568Guy was pure awesome.

Thanks. Yeah for Rusty Smith...geesh that's dedicated.A friend and I are texting now about Dinger. Neither of us can recall if it was him but both think it was when he was with Denver or when he returned to the Titans. Very much not sure. I think though a team executive called the police seeing a light on late at night and when the police arrived they found it was Dinger burning the midnight oil. Makes me chuckle and I think it puts Heimerdinger's work-ethic in proper perspective. One flat out doesn't expect even the best of workers to put that much time in.

I think this needs to be bumped today.

The Titans are really struggling without Mike. They've lost Fisher and plenty more due to obvious reasons, but Heimerdinger's passing is surely the most tragic. I can't think of a week in 2011, that their offense looked sharp and they didn't miss their OC.

Maybe some that didn't understand Mike's greatness do now so....with much respect...bump
