RIP Phife Dawg (1 Viewer)

Since everybody else is sharing lyrics, this was my favorite, all-time by Quest, hands down.

Back in '89, I simply slid into place
Buddy, buddy, buddy all up in your face
A lot of kids was bustin rhymes but they had no
taste
Some said Quest was wack, but now is that the case
I have a quest to have the mic in my hand
Without that, it's like Kryptonite and Superman
So Shaheed come in with the sugar cuts
Phife Dawg's my name, but on stage, call me Dynomutt
When was the last time you heard the Phifer sloppy
Lyrics anonymous, you'll never hear me copy
Top notch baby, never comin less
Sky's the limit, you gots to believe up in Quest
Sit back , relax, get up out the path
If not that, here's the dancefloor, come move that
###
Non-believers, you can check the stats
I roll with Shaheed and the brotha Abstract
#####z know the time when the Quest is in the jam
I never let a statue tell me how nice I am
Comin with more hits than the Braves and the Yankees
Livin mad phat like an over sized Bam-bi
The wackest crews try to dis, it makes me laugh
When my track record's longer than a DC-20 aircraft
So, next time that you think you want somethin here
Make somethin deffer, take that garbage to St.
Elsewhere

Nothing will beat my memories of '93/'94, snowboarding and listening to Midnight Marauders the whole time. Just a kid in the throes of glee and collegiate living. RIP again, big man.

Thanks. Just saw some people #####ing about it and wondered if there was some beef I didn't know about.

You should watch the documentary on Tribe that Rappaport put out a few years back.  It addressed it a bit.   IIRC Phife felt Q-Tip went Hollywood and felt left out.  I think they worked things out over the years but there was definitely beef there for a minute.

Thanks, I might check it out. I haven't listened to Tribe in awhile. Good stuff.

Damn. My wife just told me this and I knew there would be a thread in here.

He was part of the best hip hop group that ever was or ever will be.

RIP Phife Dawg

They're giving him a tribute on Backspin. Mr. Cee called in and made an interesting point that I never realize before.  Phife kind of started the trend of rappers wearing sports jerseys.  I tried, but couldn't think of anyone before him that did the same.
I'll let someone else do the legworks and ##### about dates, but Hammer was wearing Oakland As #### a long way back, and NWA with the Raiders gear are both from the same era.    Phife may have beat both of them, I dunno.

Bogus brothers makin' albums when they know they can't hack itCuz they lyrics is played like 8-Ball jacketsNow tell me I can't tear it upGo get yourself some toilet paper cuz your lyrics is butt

I remember NWA wearing Raiders hats and jackets but not game jerseys.  Hammer may have worn As jerseys, I dunno.

Sucks when guys like this pass but the silver lining is that makes me remember their music. Bump'n to some Quest right now.

The All Out Show was making the point how he was the first (or one of the first) to rap about sports.

And how he'd poke fun at himself, which was rare for a rapper to do at that time.
Kurtis Blow might hold the title of 1st to rap about sports

One of my favorite Phife verses

How can a reverend preach, when a rev can't defineThe music of our youth from 1979We rap about what we see, meaning reality>From people bustin caps and like Mandela bein freeNot every MC be with the negativityWe have a slew of rappers pushin positivityHip hop will never die yo, it's all about the rapSo Marion Barry smokin crack, let's preach about thatThe trash you talk won't matter, that old bogus chatterThe more that you condemn us, it only makes us phatterWhen I talk, I know I'm talkin for you poppers all aroundYou know you love the sound, we gets down
