RIP Robin Williams (1 Viewer)

There are celebrities, and there are permanent celebrities. Robin Williams was a permanent celebrity. Especially for people our age. He was at the peak of his career as a comedian when I was growing up and he was an outstanding actor who mellowed a little just around the time I started to. He didn't just change his roles he changed as a person and he let us see the ups and the downs with very little censorship. I wouldn't say I was his biggest fan and I never gave him the credit he deserved, but I think all of us knew he was a part of our collective consciousness. He was a great man and he will be missed. Rest in peace. And thank you.

It almost seemed like he was worse when he was OFF the drugs -- because that's when the depression demons would start messing with his head.He probably needed to be on some serious anti-depressants.....but that probably would have messed with his comedic abilities, so......

 
I wonder what effect the death of Jonathan Winters had on him, I believe the two were very close.

Yea it's been over a year, but he idolized him.

Always figured the set of Mork and Mindy when Jonathan Winters came on had to be completely nuts. Both certifiable at the time.

MJ was a weirdo but never thought he'd die young because of it. Williams had huge problems with booze and coke he battled with his whole life. I don't remember where I was when MJ died.

 
I can understand if you think he was the funniest guy who ever lived or if you thought he was completely unfunny.

That's what happens when someone is unique.

He didn't die of being a weirdo. It was well known he abused pain meds. It wasn't as shocking in the sense that he was always trying to make himself feel better with all those surgeries and it didn't work. I'm sure he had major depression as well and couldn't handle it. While he didn't kill himself, he kind of did with authorizing an anesthetic for a sedative more than once.

 
Battled drinks, drugs and was bipolar also, so not a real good combo. Loved everything her did and he will be missed

 
Sad news. He seemed like a guy who was really uncomfortable not acting so he was super goofy when off screen getting interviewed.

Haven't seen a lot of his bigger movies, I'll have to check out Jumanji with my kids.

You can see it in his comedy and I think he used that to his advantage in a way. It was natural to think "he's out of his mind", and he probably was. Had me laughing since Mork and Mindy, thanks for the laughs. RIP

Sad - showed his chops in standup, comic on film and serious roles such as Awakenings and Goodwill Hunting. Another entertainment industry sad ending.

Younger guy here that will always think of him as the Genie.

This is on par with Steve Irwin to me. I grew up watching the Crocodile Hunter, but Robin Williams I didn't have to watch every day to feel like he made an impression on me.

He was also a fan of The Legend of Zelda. RIP again.

 
He was always forthcoming about his struggles with both substances and depression, but there was something in his tone when he would snap out of character in an interview and speak earnestly for a second that always struck me as deeply, almost disturbingly, affected. And sad. Then he would catch himself and wham right back to kajillion mph.
