So what is asphyxiation? Did he hang himself?
Yes, TMZ is reporting he hung himself.
Yikes. That seems like a tough way to go. :(
Actually, if he did it right, he broke his neck and died almost instantly. There are worse ways to go.
Most people who hang themselves do not break their neck. That hangman's noose that you see in the old west movies is what comes down and snaps the neck. If you just tie a rope around your neck, you're going to feel everything until you pass out from no oxygen.

This must have been a terrible way for him to go. I can't imagine sitting down and choking yourself with a belt.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2014/08/12/robin-williams-hanged-himself-with-belt-wrist-cut/

Williams hanged himself with a belt and cut his left wrist with a pocket knife in his San Francisco area home before being discovered dead by his personal assistant on Monday, Lt. Keith Boyd, assistant chief deputy coroner, told reporters.

Lt. Boyd said Williams was found in his bedroom “clothed, in a seated position, unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck.”

Was he the greatest dual threat of all time in terms of comedic and dramatic performances?
I can't even think who #2 would be.
I'd say Steve Martin.
I guess it depends on what you think of Jim Carey's dramatic work.Others...maybe:

Billy Crystal

Steve Carell
Well Williams has an Oscar. Anybody else got one who used to be a stand up?
Um....they were asking about who would be second.
Just trying to establish tiers. And it was a legitimate question. I have no idea if any other stand ups have ever won an Oscar and figured if they had then that gives us a starting point to work from.
Tom Hanks never did regular standup, but was no stranger to broad comedy (Bosom Buddies, Splash, Bachelor Party... Nominated for an Oscar for Big) before winning two Oscars in dramatic roles. Periodically revisits broad comedy in cinema and on the late-night TV circuit.

It's like the third time I've put this same answer to this same question, but Jamie Foxx has a stand-up background and an Academy Award for Best Actor (Ray).
I think it's silly to require standup experience and an Oscar for this question. For example, I don't think Tom Hanks has standup experience and he's been great in comedic roles over the years.

Surprised they release this many details.

Seriously. Sure, the questions would come from the press after the statement, but you always have the option of withholding "out of respect for the family..." Seems odd.

I think that's where a lot of people overlook his differing talents. To me, TH is not a comedian in the stand up against the brick wall sense, but he's a comedic actor. Guys like Williams and Martin (and don't overlook Martin Mull) can do both, but it's not a mark against you if you can't.

Agreed. I'm not the one who set the parameter. I just gave an answer that fits the parameter that somebody else set as a starting point.

I also mentioned Tom Hanks earlier, and I added Alec Baldwin as an actor who excels at both comedy and drama.

I think Tom Hanks did actually do some standup comedy. Not an HBO special or anything like that. But I seem to remember he dabbled in it while researching for his role in his movie "Punchline"..

Maybe, but that's more for a role than what he did as an entertainer.

By all accounts I've seen, he hadn't used coke since 1982. I doubt seriously that "going out with drugs" was in his thinking at all.
They said he had just re-entered a 12 step rehab program. I'm honestly asking here: What was it for?
Alcohol
I heard last night that he only went back into rehab for a "touch up" and he wasn't back to any drugs or alcohol. Maybe he just thought it would help.
I think he went back occasionally for support and to help others.
my sis-in-law met him at a meeting a few years back, he seemed to know many of the people there and was talking / giving support. wouldn't surprise me if he had slipped though.

There is a picture online of Williams from this past July. It was the thinnest that I've ever seen him. He looked a good thirty plus pounds lighter than we're used to. I'm not sure if the weight loss was for a role, but I know that people suffering from severe depression often lose their appetite. If the weight loss wasn't for a role, it looks like Williams' depression also took a toll on his body.

Weird question, but Williams always looked like a stocky, fairly powerful man. Not fat, just sturdy. Barrel chest with thick arms and legs. Williams' character in Good Will Hunting, Sean, tell Will that he benches 285. Do you think that Williams used his real bench figure?

Sorry I missed it. It's an 8 page thread things get past you. Foxx really does have some chops on the acting side. Never saw any of his stand up though.

Alec Guinness would be up on the all-time list. He's got the Ealing comedies, and Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia.

I'm sorry if it's been brought up already, and I do not mean at all to taint a recently deceased man's legacy - but does the asphyxiation have anything at all to do with...no idea of the wording to use here, but there was a few episodes in the TV show Nip/Tuck about this where one of the main characters would "hang" himself while doing..... something...else.

Again, this whole thing is just so weird to me....don't mean to besmirch his legacy.

It could. One of best friend's ex died this way... but wasn't suicide apparently as this was something he did a bit of, and didn't mean to go all the way.

But the knife wounds to his wrist leads me to think that it wasn't.

It's called auto-erotic asphyxiation. That was how David Carradine ended up killing himself. But Carradine was also naked when they found him

Get ready for the jagoffs (you could've guessed this was going to happen):

Via its Twitter account, the Westboro Baptist Church indicated that it might attempt to picket his funeral.

“@robinwilliams in Hell for engaging in & glorifying sin. How ya like dem apples?” it wrote.

The Twitter account also included a number of Photoshopped images of Williams with slogans used by the church.

It had one that reads: “Robin Williams 1951 – 2014 … 2014 – Eternity never ending torment in Hell!” It also tweeted: “Newsflash: there are NO rubber noses NOR cocaine in HELL! However, @robinwilliams IS!”
I really ****ing hate these people.

I thougth that was the technical name, but wasn't 100% sure. Honestly that was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the news. Here's one of the funniest guys on the planet (your opinion may differ) with all kinds of money and blah, blah, blah....who apparently killed himself. Just didn't compute.

I agree he was very funny. But he no longer had all kinds of money. His two exes apparently cleaned him out pretty good. He was selling stuff and complaining to friends about how bad his finances were. According to some people who were allegedly close to him he only took the TV show for the check. He took it very personally when it was canceled as well.

This is like a MJ moment. We knew MJ was going to self destruct and not live a long life. Didn't see it coming with RW.
So how is it like an MJ moment...?
shock and you'll remember where you were when you heard the news
Wat?I remember where I was when the President was shot, when the Challenger blew up , and 9/11. The death of a pop icon? An actor? Get out.
If you think of Robin Williams as an actor, you're doing it wrong.
It's not your fault.

The whole alimony thing gets so out of hand it's absurd.

Didn't know about any of that, and again I don't mean to besmirch his legacy - but all of that was self inflicted. I guess I should rephrase - "the guy should have had all kinds of money."

I do know that one of his best friends was reportedly Lance Armstrong - a guy I can no longer stand the site of, and one of the reasons why I got into cycling in the first place.

I actually think they inadvertently have helped gay rights in this country. I think people look at them and say "Those folks are disgusting and I don't want to be on their side of any issue". Unintended consequences.
