Road Food on I-81 (1 Viewer)

I'm driving from the DC area to Winchester/Tullahoma, TN over the 4th of July. I'll be on I-81, I-40 and then I-75. Any recommendations for a lunch place along I-81 that aren't the usual McD/Wendys etc? I'll be leaving around 0600 so lunch time might be around Roanoke or thereabouts. I don't want to go too far off the main road, however, and I'll have my dog as co-pilot.

IIRC, there's China City (buffet) off the Martinsburg, WV exit on I-81 (Apple Harvest Drive). Get off the exit, make the left at the light, cross under the interstate to 1st light and make left on Foxcroft Avenue. Should be on the left. Very good for Chinese.

This is the best place in Roanoke, don't know if they will be open when you are driving through: http://m.yelp.com/biz/home-place-restaurant-catawba.

If you end up running late, head south at the I-26 / I-81 interchange (just south of Bristol). Take the first exit, Eastern Star road, and go left a the stop sign. Phil's Dream Pit will be about 1/4 mile on the left. Order the pork wing platter.

They have outdoor seating, so the dogs are good to go.

It is a little off the road but there is a FBG in Lynchburg that has a little BBQ business. Great brisket and pulled pork, killer sides. He may still have some Hatch green chile left to top you off with. I'm not sure what his holiday schedule is but PM if interested. A detour there would probably add an hour or so to your trip.

Who is it or name of place?

July 4th will be pretty warm. Don't be leaving your dog in the car, even with the window cracked. I'll break your windows. :boxing:

Ingredients-wise it's probably not much above Burger King/McDonalds, but I always end up stopping at Cook-Out somewhere along the way.

No worries. I'd neve do that to my buddy.

We've had 2 so far that I know of (could be more) that were brought into the local humane society when people left them in their car while they went somewhere. One was a water park and I'm sure they would have left that poor dog inside a hot car all day.

Don't tell people that. The food there is not good. Right across the street is better chinese at Asian Garden. If he were to stop anywhere in this area, and it sounds like he will be a few hours past anyway, I would stop a little farther south in Inwood and eat at Viva Mexico. Good mexican food.

Kenney's in Lexington, VA (just off 81, north of Roanoke) is a bit of a hole in the wall/dive, but has pretty good fried chicken.

Head out I-66 and grab some apple cinammon donuts at the Apple House in Linden (exit 13) for breakfast.

There's nothing in Lexington. Nothing!
Yeah, not much there. I spent three years in "Lex Vegas" for law school; those were some rough years.
Daughters BF is at VMI. What I hear from her every time she visits him: there's nothing in Lexington.
There are some interesting historical sites there, and around there, which I enjoyed. Some good hiking too. But little that would entertain the average college-age person.
