** Road To The 2018 Triple Crown - 5/10: Justy Back On (The) Track, Ruis Will Ship Bolty/Duck The Rain ** (1 Viewer)

Prep season ends this afternoon, big 100 points up for grabs at Oaklawn, minor spoils at Keeneland - which is damn quizzical ... a prep this late getting a point divvy akin to the early tests - and it's not like this is at Fonner Park - ferchrissakes, Keeneland is some hallowed ground. meh.

anyways ...

Arkansas Derby PPs

all about Magnum Moon and Solomini?  oh, there's Quip, who had his TB Derby win flattered very much last weekend with Vino Rosso bagging the Wood, and Flamey hanging tough in the Blue Grass.  but, are they gonna go 24.2/49.2 today like that TB outing? highly doubt it.

the Rebel

was MM's coming out party ... not as heralded as Justy, but similar situations here (unraced as a 2 yr. old, superstar trainer) - and we saw similar at last years Stars and Bars with Malagacy    -  MM is working very well, has his third route start form today, and should be even money come post time.  we could be in for a monster effort from this one.

Solomini came into the Rebel from a three month layoff ... had a busy 2 yr. old campaign, holding his own in four starts among the likes of Bolty, Good Magic, McKinzie - he is close to the top of that second tier, which is headed by Good Magic/Bolty atm - will be either him or MM taking that leap this afternoon, and possibly passing those two.  has worked well, and needs this one to give confidence that the two yr. old form is able to be run back to.  if ya wanna toss the Reb, i wouldn't fault you ... expecting much better from him this time around.

Quip rated off some loafing pace in the TB Derby, and had all he could handle from first time route tryer World of Trouble, who was coming in having decimated a 7f field in the Pascal, and was jumped on by the public like stink on #### - Flamey had a (now) patented facacta stretch run, and definitely had Quip's measure as they crossed.  i'm not sold on this one at all, and think he may fade out the money today ... coupla new shooters and Combatant may pass this cat up as we hit the stretch.

one of those new shooters is Asmussen's Tenfold, who has scored two route wins over this track ... gets the services of Espinoza today, as Santana jumps back on Combatant.  taking a huge step up in class, but starting to get the "wiseguy" buzzz ...

Combatant is an Asmussen grinder, has clunked up into the money in four straight Stakes starts, well seasoned with this kinda class ... allergic to the wire, though - easy toss from the top, must use underneath - he will be pickin' them up, as usual.

Asmussen has a third horse up in here - Dream Baby Dream - who closed impressively in the Sunland Derby.  will be his ninth career start, which is quite prolific for modern era TC nominated colts ... has a great shot to be picking up the stragglers with Combatant, he's definitely another underneath must use.

Magnum Moon and Solomini are the easy class here, and we should see a more contested version of their Reb match, with Solomini showing up in better form today ... underneath will be the real contest.

Lexington PPs

Desormeaux bros. special - My Boy Jack is wheeled here three weeks removed from a bizarre bolt in the Louisiana Derby    he needs some points to secure his Churchill gate, and this is much softer than the Arky - right?

outside post should be of little consequence, as he will be laying off the early pace ... expect him late, and with authority.  tenth career start, no surprises from this one, he is what he is, and the possible rain makes him even more potent here - lest Kent aims for the grandstand again

Greyvitos was a hot name early on the trail, winning a couple stakes in late '17 ... a fire at his training barn and bone chip surgery took him outta commission for four months ... last time out was the Remington Springboard, where he drew off comfortably enough ... very dangerous colt today, really love his chances here - connections have said they are eyeing the Preakness, though a win today would put him on a precarious KD bubble, pending dropouts.

Pony Up is in here for Pletcher, making his third career dirt start ... gonna need a hot pace to close in to, and will have company with MBJ - closed in 12 and change last time out in the Jeff Ruby - winner Blended Citizen bombed in last week's Blue Grass, but this is a much softer spot.

Honor Up hasn't been out in four months, most noted for chasing a debuting Audible back in November, finishing second by roughly two lengths to one of the heavy hitters ... lotta rust here.

Zanesville also comes in from the Ruby, and will also need to be coming late.

Telekenesis/Gracida/Battle At Sea should set the early fractions ... maybe BAS hangs on for a piece.

Seven Trumpets just drilled a bullet 4f, but left an awful lot on the Aqueduct track in battling Firenze Fire in a brutal Jerome strtech run - will  benefit from the slop if we get it.

As great as all your preview posts are, you managed to do what I thought impossible and make this one even a tiny bit better by throwing "facacta" in there. For a transplanted New Jerseyan, I felt like I was back home for a second.

:D

no shortage of facacta in Florida, tho - amirite?

i got your cockles, RIGHT heah...

can make a case for either fave in the Ark (but Saez is my boyee), with the rail horse maybe interfering w the exotics

Lex looks like a major prep from last year. Put up or shut up for MBJ, who i actually like more than y'all's pickeruppers. weird DT debut spot for Greyvitos

i got a Jersey connection too - commuted out from SoHo to work weekends @ the Bonnie Brae school for JDs in Bernardsville while i was waiting on some showbiz stuff in the '80s and my Manhattan connections usually resulted in me being sent back into the city to chase runaways who went into town to party & beat up gays in the Meatpacking district. good times....

Funny, a girl I used to pack with meat in the 90s sits on the Boro council in Bernardsville.

The FFA... Bringing people together since, um, a while ago.... (I realized I wasn't sure what year mid-sentence)

My Boy Jack closes down the Lex, made the last to first move quite well - stretch battle with Telekenesis, who passed at tiring Greyvitos on the lead ... MBJ lugged a bit down the middle, but ya never felt he wasn't gonna get there.  Pony Up closed nicely for third.

ON TO CHURCHILL for the winner and the Desormeaux bros

You think he has any chance to hit the board or is he a toss for you?

You think he has any chance to hit the board or is he a toss for you?
i'm keeping an eye on him.

i never doubted him taking the Lex once he made his move, but he did have to work for it ... and that Louisiana Derby was no picnic.

he has the perfect closing move for Churchill, but it will be his third call in nine weeks. will be tough to ignore underneath, no doubt.

rank him right behind Vino, and ahead of the Free Drop/Lone Sailor/Hofburg crew - all who only have one path to the exotics:  CLOSECLOSECLOSE.

one thing MBJ has over Vino though - he's never failed to get up on the board through these preps (Vino missed in TB Derby).

Magnum Moon by a comfy five in the Arkansas Derby - played possum with Quip through some soft fractions, the latter hangs for second, Solomini third in a very contested stretch for the underneath

Nice run to wire 'em, but that big drift out wide down the stretch won't play at CD.

Nice run to wire 'em, but that big drift out wide down the stretch won't play at CD.
Quip getting soft pace yet again here ... this race did nothing to convince me that he has any shot hanging when things heat up - gladly tossing.

Solomini is running out of excuses - he'll have a gate in Churchill, but he's a tough one to back on tix right now.

MM is still green and learning things ... but that was essentially a paid workout - was never in doubt.

Arkansas Derby - look at how they came home:

Final 3/8 & 1/8:  Magnum Moon 36.47 / 11.99  :excited:    Quip 37.13 / 12.33    Solomini 36.81 / 12.20   Combatant 36.30 / 12.16

the pace clicked up as each fraction was reached - MM really chugged home in a hurry, a sub 12 close, even with that drift out - watch him draw off, with plenty left at the line - looks like he wanted some more distance ... easily the fastest close we've seen this campaign. Justy is gonna be installed as favorite, no question ... but this one is gonna be right up there with Audible/Mendy for second choice.

Solomini with a less than ideal trip, Tenfold fanned his ### outside, then they went with a duck in for the stretch ... that finish for underneath was hotly contested, and he came in a neck back of second.

Quip was the only one slowing down - candidate to finish 19th in KD, right in front of Promises Fulfilled. breeding suggests he has no shot at the KD distance, the preps have done nothing to counter that.

Combatant makes it to Churchill!  man, always finding a way to factor, but never a threat to win - has zero chance to take the 20 horse field, but he is one you gotta reckon with late ... came home fastest (3/8th) of 'em all.

Lexington Stakes

a foto-finish, but ... once you saw My Boy Jack making his big move at the 1/2, didja ever think he wasn't gonna get there?  Desormeaux ducked immediately in from the outside right from the git ... sat patiently, then started pickin' them off like clockwork - hell of a run by Telekenesis, but ya just knew what was coming.  the KD will be MBJ's third try in nine weeks, but very hard to leave this one out the exotics.  Pony Up sat even further back, and probably came in fastest of them all.

/FIN PREP SEASON.

Full Leader Board  - wouldn't expect all of those top 20 to make it to first Saturday in May - we always have a couple/few dropouts ...

ETA: aaaand Runaway Ghost  is first to drop.

and now we wait -

This is going to be tough. Magnum Moon, Mendelssohn, and Justify are probably the three most "impressive" horses in the field, but past history/trends would make them all instant tosses.

Final furlong under 12 for MM - just what you wanna see. I think he's a cut below (born a year late), but who knows. Saez has such an amazingly aerodynamic seat - he may be the pound-for-pound strongest athlete in sport right now. Does he have other calls? The lugout was response to a sharp reining on the turn (oddly, MBJ did the same in the Lex) but not something you want to see in a field of 20.

Two maybe three superstars this crop, but still only one pushbutton horse. Justify's size makes him the only of the "super"s who could possibly work past a mistake, so  Audible would still be my key horse.

Roxy Roxborough‏ @RoxyLasVegas 4h4 hours ago

My #KYDerby odds,100 point line

Justify 9/2

Audible 7

Magnum Moon 8

Mendelssohn 8

Bolt d'Oro 10

Good Magic 12

Vino Rosso 15

Enticed 25

Solomini 30

Noble Indy 35

Hofburg 40

Flameaway 50

Promises 50

Quip 50

My Boy Jack 75

Others 100 or more

Good stuff guys. Agree that the sub 12 finish makes MM very tough. Haven’t seen the race yet. Will start handicapping the race now. Sounds like some speed up front to push Justify. (Maybe he can rate but if I don’t see it in any prep I think it’s too late to change their style).  Audible seemed to be the one who was push button. MBJ can close but I think he flattens going 1 1/4

... think Justy goes first outta that top 4 lot - Smiff wants him clear, and could easily see him being the first to inhale the upfront pacesetters (PF, Quip, NI) - Mendy follows, MM on his heels ... Audible the latest moving of that quartet - PF is in there to heat things up, Romans is definitely gonna send ... Quip is interesting as far as the early pace scenario goes ... watching that Arky replay - he was being absolutely choked the #### back for the entire second quarter ... he wants to go, and i can't see them rationing at Churchill - his connections have not yet fully committed for the KD, however.  but, if he is in there, can't see any way he sits back, and he's gonna give PF company early. will we get 21.4 like the Fla. Derby?  probably not, but PF isn't winning this thing, so .... who the hell knows?  but he will draw Quip and NI and possibly Flamey/Enticed with him.

think the underneath is setting up very well for the closers ... Vino is the only possible winner outta that lot (VR, MBJ, FDB, Hofburg, Lone Sailor, Combatant) .... it's gonna be a very crowded stretch, no matter if one of the elites blows the doors off - the exotics payday will only come from those late charging gatecrashers, imo.

Already looking forward to my annual Derby pool party, we'll be hanging out in post 1 of this thread all afternoon.

Was down at Keeneland for the Stonestreet (bet on Greyvitos  :wall: ).  My Boy Jack ran a big race, just like the LA Derby.  Hard to see him getting around 19 horses in the KD, particularly after two all-out drives in these preps.

agreed, but don't think anyone is expecting MBJ to take the KD down - and, as i mentioned earlier, will be third start in nine weeks - tall order, and easy toss from the top.

but, thing about him is that he clunks up ... and the KD will be his tenth! lifetime start at the two turn route config ... that kinda seasoning is absolutely unheard of these days at this level.

fair bet to fill out the tri, even better to round out the super ... that's where he will/should take the majority of his coin - but he is gonna have a ton of company coming late - depends on how early Kent moves him ... if they go too soon i could easily see him flatten - if he's last at the 1/2 call i think he has a fantastic shot to pick up plenty of horses.

will be even more potent if conditions are less than ideal ? ?

Combatant not in yet, as i previously posted ... sitting as next horse up with 32 points if we get another dropout - Runaway Ghost's exit kept Firenze Fire in the KD field, and Gronk gets the Euro invite ... so Combatant waits - Snapper Sinclair would be next after that, but his connections have been pointing towards the Pat Day Mile for the past few weeks.  Reride (last seen 20 lengths behind Mendy at Meydan) and deep closer Dream Baby Dream complete the "bubble".

Note: all four of the bubble brigade are trained by Asmussen.

ETA: finishing fractions to the final Derby Preps:

Arkansas Derby

Magnum Moon 36.47 / 11.99
Combatant 36.30 / 12.16
Solomini 36.81 / 12.20
Quip 37.13 / 12.33

S.A. Derby

Justify 37.11 / 12.70
Bolt d'Oro 37.37 / 12.96
Instilled Regard 38.09 / 13.00

Blue Grass

Good Magic 38.21 / 13.31
Flameaway 38.55 / 13.31
Free Drop Billy 38.46 / 13.23

Wood

Vino Rosso 37.59 / 12.81
Enticed 38.27 / 13.30

UAE

Mendelsshon 37.47 / 12.96 (only one available)

Florida Derby

Audible 37.46 / 12.52
Hofburg 37.72 / 12.69
Mississippi 39.46 / 13.92
Catholic Boy 39.42 / 13.54

Hofburg had himself a nice closing second in that Fla. Derby ... picks up Irad Ortiz for the KD, as his usual rider, Jose Ortiz (yes, brothers) will be piloting Good Magic.

only three career starts, but peaking at the right time.

At this moment, still 2+ weeks away, I keep going back and forth between Magnum Moon and Justify as to who I like as my top horse. No horse from the Bluegrass or Wood impressed me and Mendy, while it was an impressive romp at the UAE, I keep telling myself, can a horse from the UAE against weaker competition really ship over and win this thing? I was really high on Bolt D'Oro until the SA derby, he didn't do much for me in this race, or did Justify really do that well to make Bolt D'Oro look bad. (maybe another American Pharoah always beating up on Dortmund type?) I love that Gronkowski is going to be in the derby, he will be a favorite among the feel good type horse bettors (ala Patch last year), he wont be anywhere on my tickets, but should get bet down. Audible definitely seems to be one of those favorites this year that has that push button at the end of the race, I will definitely have him in my exotics. I love this time of year, can't wait.

... and this would be even deeper had we not lost the likes of McKinzie/Avery Island/Mourinho - and, to a lesser extent, Greyvitos - who was getting a ton of two year old buzz before falling off due to injury.

this crop took awhile to get going, with those top four (Justy/MM/Audible/Mendy) debuting a tad later, then rocketing to the top, making such promising early hotshots Good Magic/Bolty/Solomini no better than second tier atm - that is a remarkably deep group of three year olds - we went from "WHERE'S OUR FAVORITE?" to "CHUCK A ####### DART!" in a matter of weeks.  just a fantastic prep season.

as far as the win bet, i think Audible is presenting some tremendous value at the 8/1 range - if he is there come May 5th i just may make my first ever "WIN" wager on the Derby ... if not, i will stick to my exotic wheels - this is the pool that can yield huge dividends, so it's well worth the spread.

Just got an e-mail from my brother inviting me to his daughter's 12th birthday party at his condo complex's community pool.  2-7 PM on May 5th, "bring a Mexican dish for the Cinco de Mayo themed party."

I might bake a tray of enchiladas and then show up and break it over his melon f###ing head.

Where were you going to watch the race?

Where were you going to watch the race?
Uncertain.  My wife is out of town and I have a separate fridge full of good beer and multiple bottles of bourbon in the bar, so inviting people to my house was a possibility.  Instead, I'll be somewhere with no TV and no WiFi.  Likely going to have to cut the day short, but all my local amigos will be at this stupid party, so it's a pretty good chance I'll be leaving around 5, driving 3 miles home and watching the race by myself in my living room or pool while sadly nursing a mint julep and cursing the Ox's name.  If that happens, expect a lot of posts from me here as we approach post time.

ya notice Gronkowski actually looks a little like Gronkowski?
hey, this ain't the NBA thread, guy - this is reserved for hard hittin' analysis, "WÜNDERHORSE" hot takes, and for me to admonish folks who only place win wagers ...

oh, and  :lmao:

I answered back : "Hey, is it cool if I show up with a bunch of mint juleps and then spend half the afternoon behind my laptop handicapping, or will that go over like a fart in church?  If the latter, I'll be there roughly 2-5.  Anything she really wants for her birthday?"

Her older sister would probably say : "OK, but only if you put some Volbeat on too."  She's my girl.

This one would give the same face she always does when I say something like this (it happens all the time).  A melange of confusion, disbelief that we're related, and utter disgust.

I wish.  The enchiladas are likely to be ruined when I bring the Pyrex baking dish down on the Ox's rapidly balding head at roughly 114 MPH.

Community pool at a condo complex. There's a little clubhouse they rent out for parties that has a kitchen and tables/chairs, but no TV or WiFi. I mean, I could leave and walk over to Ox's condo and just sit there and watch it, but at that point, I might as well just go home. I have TV and Wi-Fi at my pool. Stupid condo pool.

always a shot that there's inclement weather down your way on the 5th - maybe the rain godz will smile down

will be watching at home this go 'round ... the crew i usually party with are greatly dispersed this year, and the jernt we usually hang at for the KD was already reserved for a Cinco bash some three months ago ... totally slipped our minds to factor that variant in.
