NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas was killed in a car accident Saturday night in south Nashville.
The accident happened in the 800 block of Battery lane around 11 p.m.
Metro police confirmed a white SUV driven by Bironas lost control and crashed into several trees before landing upside down.
Bironas was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
A tweet sent from his Twitter account said It's w/ heavy hearts that we confirm the passing RB # 2 We appreciate your respect for the family's privacy and your prayers at this time.
Bironas married his wife, Rachel Bradshaw, in Nashville on June 28, 2014.
Bironas singed with the Titans in 2005 as an unrestricted free agent and was released by the team in March.
He holds the NFL record for most field goals in a single game after he successfully converted eight field goals against the Houston Texans in October of 2007.
Bironas was the named the AFC player of the month and to the Pro Bowl in 2008. He led the Titans in scoring in both 2005 and 2006.
Bironas founded the Rob Bironas fund in 2008, which is a Nashville-based charity that works to engage youth with area musicians.
