O.K. experts ...

Does anybody know if Robert Mathis DL of the Colts is just playing on passing situations or if he is playing every down?

Without seeing the games ... how does one find out the % of plays a player is playing?

In the past ... Mathis has only played in passing situations and has thus limited his consistent fantasy production ie more of a homerun type player. There was rumor that he was going to play more downs - can anybody articulate about this.

Thanks

Mathis is an every down player. The last time I remember there being a significant rotation was 2004. There were some snaps lost to Raheem Brock at end in 2005, but Mathis hasn't come off the field much at all over the past two plus seasons.

I know of no way other than watching/charting the game yourself to have any idea of the percentage of snaps played or formation played by a given defense. Football Outsiders has a game charting project like this, but doesn't publish its full dataset anywhere, subscription or otherwise.

I'm just not to sure. He seemed to be a situational guy last year ... hence why he seemed to make very isolated big plays on long passing downs instead of more consistent sack/tackle numbers.

I understood him to be undersized and could be compared to say elvis dumervil was used last year in denver when he returned from his injury last year. Also an undersized but nice sack guy.

Mathis has averaged over 50 solo tackles a season over the past two years. Very few defensive linemen have done the same. Still fewer are consistent 3 solo tackle per week guys. It's the nature of OL matchups among many other variables. Edge rushing players, particularly undersized players who play on the strong side, will be susceptible to those inconsistencies in tackle numbers. Generally speaking, those big plays on longer passing downs occur because the quarterback is holding the ball longer to allow deeper routes to develop and/or do whatever possible to generate the yardage needed for a new set of downs.

Mathis has played pretty much every snap in the games I have seen over the last couple of years.
I'd agree with this. Mathis is on the field as much as any other 3 down defensive lineman.
O.K. I'll adjust my thinking. Thanks for clearing that up folks.I think it is more of the nature of the beast for lineman to be all or nothings. I hate that for a head to head league but it is what it is.
