My three season porch is finally warm enough to be usable after the cold winter, so I moved my PS3 out there so I could practice this daily without being bothered by the family. I've played it five days in a row, here are my observations/experience:
-Still anxious for a callous to start. I essentially have little feeling in my left index finger. It's a lot better than the constant pain, but its a weird sensation.
-I am my own worst enemy. I'm not patient enough to put in the time (yet) to focus on and learn one song at a time. I had been playing Blitzkrieg Bop, but then hit a slowdown in my development, so I jumped to a bunch of other songs. The upside is I found a song I like better that is about as easy (Living After Midnight), but the downside is I lost everything I learned on BB. As a beginer, I don't think you can be working on more than a couple of songs at a time. My hope is that I don't get sick of these songs by the time I've learned out to play them. It is awesome to play the chorus of Living After Midnight and feel like I'm actually playing it.
-I switched from lead guitar to rhythm. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. I felt like playing rhythm would be a little easier, and since the description made it sound like it was more chord focused, that would be better for my development. I'm not sure if any of the guitarheads have any input on that.
-One thing I don't get is that you will play a chord, and then there is a big space between that and your next chord. The fret won't appear, but at the bottom there fret numbers are still there (say 3...5) but the fret display doesn't show. If you don't play anything it will say "miss" like you were supposed to strike the chord again. Other times, you play the same shord multiple times in a row and it shows it everytime. Not sure if anyone can picture what I am talking about, but it is confusing.
-Lastly, does anyone else feel like they are hearing what they are playing? Could be that I have the sound coming through the TV, but it seems like the only sound I hear myself playing is the vibration from the strings themself. I don't get the feeling I can hear myself playing like you were hooked up to an amp. In rock band, if you didn't hit the notes right, you wouldn't hear your part coming out. But here, it doesn't seem like I hear any difference if I hit the notes right or not. I don't know if its because I have a rotten guitar, or just the way the game is set to show. Sometimes I feel like hooking up my amp and playing riff repeater just to hear myself actually play, but didn't know if I was doing something wrong.
