Roethlisberger's suspension cut to four games by NFL

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's six-game suspension for violating the league's personal-conduct policy was reduced to four by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Friday morning.
Goodell and Roethlisberger met for less than an hour on Friday, and the quarterback immediately headed back to Pittsburgh.
The NFL released the following statement:
"Commissioner Goodell met with Ben Roethlisberger today and notified him that his suspension has been reduced to the Steelers’ first four regular-season games. The reinstatement is contingent on Roethlisberger continuing to adhere to the program established by our advisors and avoiding any further violations of the Personal Conduct Policy. During the suspension, Roethlisberger cannot be at the team’s practice facility, attend games, represent the club publicly in any way, have contact with any member of the coaching staff or other football operations personnel, or engage in any team football-related activities or discussions with teammates away from team facilities.
“ 'You have told me and the Steelers that you are committed to making better decisions,' ” Commissioner Goodell said in a letter to Roethlisberger. “ 'Your actions over the past several months have been consistent with that promise and you must continue to honor that commitment.' ”
With the shortened suspension, Roethlisberger will first be eligible to play in the Steelers' Oct. 17 home game against the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers' bye occurs the previous week, so Roethlisberger will have two weeks of practice entering that game.
Goodell stated he would consider cutting Roethlisberger's suspension to four games if the quarterback followed the league's guidelines and stayed out of trouble.
Goodell's meeting with Roethlisberger followed the NFL's review of the quarterback's behavior since he was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student following a night of drinking in a Milledgeville, Ga., bar on March 5. Once it was determined six weeks later that Roethlisberger wouldn't be charged by Georgia authorities, Goodell suspended Roethlisberger for the start of the season and ordered him to undergo an extensive evaluation.
Roethlisberger is the first player suspended by Goodell under the personal-conduct policy who wasn't arrested, charged with or convicted of a crime. However, Goodell said in April that the policy allows him to impose such a penalty when the NFL's integrity and reputation are at stake.
Roethlisberger cannot practice once his suspension begins Friday. He plans to work with a California-based quarterbacks coach, George Whitfield, and he'll throw to some free-agent receivers who are looking for work in the league.
Roethlisberger also is being sued in Nevada by a woman who says he sexually assaulted her there in 2008. No charges were brought in that case, and it didn't figure in the NFL's suspension.
That team in 1976 was the ultimate walking wounded. Didn't a center end up having to do some kicking for them? (Ray Mansfield, I think?)Always was impressed with the way that team circled the wagon.PS Sorry for the hijack.Went 6-0 as a starter in 1976 without ever throwing a TD pass. St. Pierreshark move would be Mark Malone or Cliff StoudtNo big surprise but ABC News is reporting that Roethlisberger's suspension has been officially reduced from six games to four by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

I realize that Terry has since found the Lord but he did his fair share of boozing and womanizing so I am surprised he is casting stones.Terry Bradshaw is not happy. We will definitely hear more on this the first weekend of commentating.
Perhaps he considers his 'womanizing' and his decision on the acts that were conducted by Big Ben to be two different things. Not that I partake in or agree with womanizing, but so long as they say 'yes' I can see a difference between that and the alleged acts of Roth.I realize that Terry has since found the Lord but he did his fair share of boozing and womanizing so I am surprised he is casting stones.Terry Bradshaw is not happy. Phil needs to use the search function.Phil wants to know...wasn't this expected to get reduced to 4 games?
Perhaps he believes that he didn't rape the woman but still doesn't approve of Ben's boorish behavior and the kind of publicity he was drawing. I realize that I shouldn't bother but the reps at Muirfield Golf course stated that while there was a complaint made about a golfer peeing that day they had a full slate of golfers and that it could have been anyone.I guess I don't understand why they are suspending him at all. Either you think he is a predator or you think he isn't. You can't sort of rape a girl. Goodell either believes he raped or assaulted that girl or he believes he didn't. I don't understand how his behavior in the past few months has any bearing at all. Great job Ben, you didn't assault anyone and you only hung your penis out in public once all summer at the golf course. Color me![]()
It was established a long time ago that it wasn't Ben who was whizzing at the golf course, it was someone else. Seriously. I am "without God" right now...maybe I will never find him, maybe I will tomorrow. But to the core of my inners, I hope I never judge those without it (or those with a loose meaning of it) and come across as holier-than-thou.Godsbrother said:I realize that Terry has since found the Lord but he did his fair share of boozing and womanizing so I am surprised he is casting stones.rzrback77 said:Terry Bradshaw is not happy. Was ever Bradshaw ever accused of sexual assault? BIG, BIG difference between womanizing and sexual assault, FYI. As for the reduction, no one should be surprised by this. Considering how much pull Rooney has with the league, Roethlisberger probably would have had to have had another accusation lobbed at him NOT to have it reduced.Godsbrother said:I realize that Terry has since found the Lord but he did his fair share of boozing and womanizing so I am surprised he is casting stones.rzrback77 said:Terry Bradshaw is not happy. This is Goodell's loophole...sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. While he can make a decision based upon the "image of the league", in the end, I think he is pretty fair. Take a close look at Burress' case. Everyone knows (whether you like him or not) that his penalty was pretty harsh. Out of the gate, Goodell said he would be eligible for reinstatement once he is released (eventually...lol). I think he really looks at what "the story is" and not whether someone got a slap on the wrist or 5 years in jail.Godsbrother said:Perhaps he believes that he didn't rape the woman but still doesn't approve of Ben's boorish behavior and the kind of publicity he was drawing. To be fair, i don't think there were many women in the 70s that cried rape...understand, I am NOT saying Bradshaw ever raped a woman, but to compare him and Roth and guys like Mantle and Rodriguez is just night and day...A-Rod probally pulls 1/10th of the tail that Mantle did and it is not only on the back cover of the Post each morning, it has random details to boot. I am sure that most 60s and 70s athletes got away with more back then than they do today, would you agree? Was ever Bradshaw ever accused of sexual assault? *sigh* Being accused doesn't mean guilty. Read the evidence in the DA's report and tell me that you can determine what happened that night. Witnessess were split but they all said the two were flirting during the evening and the woman had followed Ben from bar to bar. She was drinking heavily and wearing a button that said DTF and changed her testimony to the police not once but three times. Based on the facts as we know them it is impossible to know if there was sexual assualt or not.Bradshaw has a right to say whatever he wants, I was just pointing out that he certainly wasn't a choirboy during his career. Was ever Bradshaw ever accused of sexual assault? Of course, but it is unfair to assume that Bradshaw or any other athlete back then was doing the same thing that BR was accused of.To be fair, i don't think there were many women in the 70s that cried rape...understand, I am NOT saying Bradshaw ever raped a woman, but to compare him and Roth and guys like Mantle and Rodriguez is just night and day...A-Rod probally pulls 1/10th of the tail that Mantle did and it is not only on the back cover of the Post each morning, it has random details to boot. Fair enough. I am ready to move on...I never said he was guilty; I said he was accused of sexual assault.
Fair or unfair that is the way it is. The problem I have is I think it can upset the competitive balance within a division. In this case it could be the Bengals that are getting the raw end of the stcik since they have to face the Steelers with Roethlisberger twice while the Ravens will only face him once. Then again I guess it is the same with injuries.I would prefer they allow the players to play but fine them for a set number of game checks. How many games did Phi Merling get for punching a pregnant woman? How many games did Terrell Suggs get for assaulting his wife and pouring bleach on her and his son?Still seems unfair. Drunken allegations that a police department thought were bogus shouldn't equal a 4 game suspension and the loss of millions of dollars in game salary.
Are you serious? That kind of money, even 1/4 of his yearly salary, is chump change to them. Making them miss the games, and hurting them and the team, is the best way to send a message. I am sure most players would rather lose money rather than lose the games. Fining them, but still letting them play, would send a terrible message.I would prefer they allow the players to play but fine them for a set number of game checks.

Allowed Ben to be found not guilty? What are you talking about, there wasn't enough evidence that a sexual assualt had occurred so Roethlisberger was never arrested and no charges were ever filed.Don't confuse being a knucklehead with being a criminal.I realize that we are used to seeing alot of Rumors on these boards in general but in this case noone assumes Ben was not guilty of this. The question marks surrounding the evidence and witnesses allowed Ben to be found not guilty but Goodell sent a message.
Absolutely. In this case allowing him to play the games but fining him for 16 and participate in counseling and perform community service in the offseason would be better in my opinion. I don't care who you are, losing an entire season's pay in a player's career is HUGE. Also do not allow any of the stats he accumulates to be used for incentives and bonuses, etc.I know it won't happen, I just think it would be fairer to the team, their season ticket holders and the competitive balance of the division/conference.Are you serious? So how many games should Shaun Rogers have been suspended for?Are you serious? That kind of money, even 1/4 of his yearly salary, is chump change to them. What actions are you saying constitute being a knucklehead here in this case?JAllowed Ben to be found not guilty? Continually putting himself in bad situations. Ben's routine was to go out to clubs and eventually get a private room and have members of his entourage ask the good looking ladies to join him and his friends for drinks. Had he just gone out and stayed in public areas he likely would have stayed out of trouble. What actions are you saying constitute being a knucklehead here in this case?JAllowed Ben to be found not guilty? That's true. What's dangerous I think is the difference in what people think really happened. I'm sure some would say the real story is that there was significantly more than just having drinks with his friends. I'm not saying you're doing this, but in some ways, it can sound like "OJ Simpson was just being a knucklehead". Obviously, there is an entirely different level of accusation between someone that wasn't charged and someone that was found not guilty in court. But I see folks sometimes brush off accusations when there isn't legal action. I think most of us aren't so naive to believe that just because someone isn't charged, it must mean nothing happened.JContinually putting himself in bad situations. You do realize anyone with money gets private rooms/booths/sections of clubs and asks their entourage to fill it with groupies? Hell when I buy enough bottles in Vegas, the bouncers will do it for you.I think it is actually the smart thing for any type of celebrity to do otherwise you never know what jealous drunk ##### looking to impress some girls would to you.Continually putting himself in bad situations. Exactly, because there are so many people that this hits home with in some way or another, and as such they would crucify anyone associated with the incident without knowing whatever really happened. He was never suspended for "raping" the girl........He was suspended for behavior detrimental to the league.Sabertooth said:I guess I don't understand why they are suspending him at all. And the other parts of the story are that the first cop on the scene called the woman reporting the assault a ##### and told her she had no chance against Roethlisberger's attorneys; that the cops viewed part of the video from the bar but left it there and the bar erased it before the cops could view any more; that the cops did not secure the bathroom that was the supposed crime scene and allowed the bar to wash it out with bleach; and that Roethlisberger had 2 cop friends with him that night as bodyguards, one of whom who led the drunk woman to a bathroom for Ben to have.Rarely has anyone accused of sexual assault benefitted from so much police protection.Read the evidence in the DA's report and tell me that you can determine what happened that night. Terry Bradshaw is lucky they didn't have a personal conduct policy when he was a player. He was a drinker and a womanizer. For him to keep going off on Ben looks more like a personal vendetta because Ben hasn't idolized him than anything.
