Just saw he lost to someone I've never even heard of. It's been, what, like 2 years since he has dominated this sport? He's been beaten up for 2 years by a skinny Spaniard. He always looks like he is depressed. I think this Del Poltro lost is the final straw.

A couple days ago they showed Federer kicking Agassi's butt during a rain delay. That's the Federer who could play, this new one is just a shell. Like Tiger Woods, this guy's career is over.

If you have never heard of Juan Martin Del Porto - who won three ATP events in a row last summer, and has gone deep into several grand slams since - then you really aren't paying attention.

FWIW, nobody thought much of 19 y.o. Sampras either.

For the first time EVER, I agree with you.

I'll bet you he wins another Grand Slam title, which doesn't happen when someone's career is over.

Woz knows tennis.

This is a completely horrible thread from someone who doesn't even come close to paying attention to tennis.

The guy has made SEVEN consecutive major finals and 17 of the last 18.

he's 15-6 overall in major finals.

Sure it was still an upset, and there's no question he's not blowing guys out as readily, but Del Potro was not chopped liver.

Yeah, he only won 2 majors this year and only reached the finals in the other 2. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Del Potro took out Rafael Nadal in three straight sets. He's only 20 years old, and he's getting better.

to nadal's credit, the guy was nowhere near 100% healthy. But yes.. Del Potro is nearly twenty-one.. Federer didn't win a major until 23.And critics have said Del Potro isn't really even at peak fitness... that his game really has a long way to go.But then again, guys like Djokavic win one also... and then they are content and don't keep pushing.

17 majors, 7 wimbledon's, #1 rankingGOATThank you Wimbledon roof and Luke Rosol
Borg was the best Wimbledon player ever. He retired at 26, had to face the likes of Connors and McEnroe to do it...who has Federer really had to sweat at Wimbledon? He also won 6 French Opens and was perhaps the greatest clay court player ever until I watched Nadal the last many years.

Borg wasn't near the Grass player Sampras was.Borg was great. had a great run, beat some great players. Not federer's fault Borg didn't participate in the AO and couldn't win a USO.Federer beat a guy named Rafa Nadal twice, last i heard he was pretty good.Andy Roddick was a damn good player he took out 3 times.. if Federer isn't born, Roddick is a 5-7 time grand slam winner.Federer had to go through Djokavic to win this.. a guy with 5 grand slams who could end a career with 8+Federer

I get the Rosol comment, but I don't understand the comment about the roof. Several commentators have mentioned it, but no one has mentioned WHY this favored Federer.

I'm going with Borg also. That thing that he used is no comparison to the equipment that Sampras used.

Right. And Sampras's opponents were prohibited from using equipment like his. There may be good arguments for Borg, but that's not one of them.

Has anyone mentioned how fugly Murray and his family are? His mom was downright scary looking. Lot of recessive genes in that pool.

Sounds like a concession to me that he isn't the greatest of all time. When did people say that about Sampras? I think fans of others were thanking other players for knocking him out, not Sampras fans happy someone took someone else out. In his final US Open win, he beat Agassi. Sounds like unlike Sampras, people even his own fans don't think Federer could win one if Nadal is in his way. Even in the twilight of his career and Agassi playing at a higher level, that was never the feeling with Sampras.

Federer has great footwork and timing, take out the wind and that allows him to utilize those skills even more.
Federer has been absolutely crushing indoor tournaments for a couple years now. No one pays attention to the end of years "WTF" tournament which is the top 8 players playing each other for a few days in a tournament.. but arguably that has to be one of the more difficult tournaments to win as you never play a softie. With wimbledon Roger only beat 2 guys he wasn't HEAVILY favored against (although one did push him to the limit)with the WTF, everyone is good. And he's won 6 of those... they are indoor..

But then again, guys like Djokavic win one also... and then they are content and don't keep pushing.
Solid.
indeed.. in 2009 no one saw 2011 Djokavic coming... i wonder if murray will ever step up and hit that gear. Also who is coming down the pipeline? Are Nadal, Djoker, or Murray going to still be winning all the slams in '14 and '15?
JMDP if he's healthy, but I'm definitely questioning his mental fortitude.

look, nadal has his number. I don't know what it is about Nadal, but his game severely troubles Roger's.Granted it's a lot less so off clay... but he troubles him.But Nadal has a lot more shortcomings in his resume... like Luke Rosol. Federer hasn't donked off a match to a non-top 10 opponent in over 33 straight grand slams. He's insanely consistent.I can't ignore the dark spot on Roger's resume that is the H2H vs. Rafa. But here's the thing:If my life depends on it - I have to take Roger or Rafa in best of 21 on various surfaces... i'll take rafa reluctantly.. although i'll need to know exactly how many of those are going to be on clay vs. indoorbut If it's a best of 199 match tournament against the entire field, I'll take prime Roger... he's going to post a better record vs. the field.

And Sampras has no Nadal like guy that had his number. Sampras needed no one to take out his chief rival for him, he was up to the task which the greatest of all time should be up to. Even you don't seem to have faith Federer can accomplish that. How can you feel Federer is the best ever if he's not even better than a contemporary? Shouldn't the best of all time actually be favored especially against the guys he played against?

In what other sport is the arguably best ever not even able to best his contemporaries?

gotta be someone that would be favored in your best of 21 event and I'd say Sampras fits that bill. Others too but by own admission, Federer is out.

The equpiment was better, the racket head bigger, Borg would have been even more unstoppable. I'm saying put Borg with the same equipment and he beats them. I didn't say Sampras had an advantage over his competition. It's the same with Eldrick Woods, If he played with that tiny driver that Nicklaus used, Jack would have ripped him apart. Hell Eldrick can't even control the big head driver he currently uses. Once he brought that out in desperation at the US Open, he was hack central.

How many French Opens did Sampras win?
