LOS ANGELES -- Let there be peace.

As in Metta World Peace.

A brief hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday morning made it official -- Ron Artest has changed his name to Metta World Peace.

According to Artest's publicist, Courtney Barnes, Artest was not present for the ruling, but his attorney, Nahla Rajan, represented her client in front of commissioner Matthew C. St. George.

"[Rajan] walked up, the judge said, 'We understand he wants to change his name and he wants to do so for personal reasons,' and it was granted," Barnes said. "That was it. It was that quick."

Artest's initial request to change his name last month was delayed because of a failure to pay an outstanding parking ticket.

"As soon as we found out about it from the previous hearing, once we were able to track down the ticket, it was immediately taken care of," Barnes said.

Artest's 8-year-old daughter, Diamond, also plans to change her surname from Artest to World Peace now that her father's name change has become official.

"This process needed to go through [Friday] and be legal before there would be any pursuit of that," Barnes said.

"Metta is going to be the first name and it means like friendship, love and kindness," Artest told Stephen A. Smith on 710 ESPNLA earlier this month. "World Peace is going to be the last name, so everybody can get ready to buy their World Peace jerseys."

Artest told Yahoo! Sports he plans to wear No. 70 next season, but the NBA has rules that prevent players from switching their uniform number from year to year. The deadline for a player to change his number is in early March to have it go into effect for the next season and once a number is changed, it has to be worn for five seasons with that team before a player is allowed to change it (unless he is traded to a new team or leaves as a free agent).

Artest wore No. 37 after signing on as a free agent with the Lakers in 2009-10 and did switch to No. 15 last season. It's not clear what he had to do to accomplish that.

The uniform rule does not come with any stipulations for a name change, however.

If there is a request or circumstance that calls for a number change within the five-year period is approved, it may come with a cost of some kind, according to a league source.

This really shows he is mentally stable now
What the hell, this is the mention World B Free thread, are you daft?Learn the rules or don't post
B-Deep vs. MOPLet’s start with some B-Deep hype. I went and looked thru a lot of his posts and I want to highlight one in particular on the opening page of a thread. It’s a thread about music, but somebody posts a picture of a stage leading to a butthole, and B-Deep says, "the butthole is awesome." Now, he probably had 3 posts lined up inside the brain and he picked what, to me, was the perfect one. What happens is once somebody makes a post like that, it's bound to end up in a signature, and that's ultimately an indication of a pretty well-played post. B-Deep takes the post and the post is designed I think to go one way but he shows “good vision” and cuts it back in a completely different direction. He took this one to the end zone easily. Now you guys know I don’t always go into that much depth but B-Deep is in the special tier of posters that probably is going to look really strong against weak Shark Pool shtick and complete lack of wit. So before we proclaim B-Deep a stud let’s be honest in saying the competition here is probably a bottom tier poster right now. He looked that way on Ole Yeller and it hasn’t changed yet.I like B-Deep this week again but it’s not a given that he is going to go off every week. He still gets banned a little too frequently. His 4 posts in all of 2010 really bring down the numbers, especially in a shtick per post leagues. Will he continue to see that many posts? I would add B-Deep to a growing list of players that you might want to buy low on. Let’s face it, this guy is an up-and-comer, and his best years are most likely ahead of him. I am liking what I see but I also am a realist and try to separate emotion from these analysis. Let’s move over to MOP who has a nice post every year or so, which far exceeds his ranking on a lot of websites. I highlight him as a must play (against) and while he struggles some in trying to get on staff, he does enough crazy things to make me feel strongly about never wanting to meet him in person. But again, if he does not make you feel comfortable you likely will have a strong opp to trade him in the next week or two. MOP highlights ALL the RBs in every game and he still gets overlooked. Sad, really. I'm calling this a matchup to exploit for B-Deep, and I'd avoid MOP for another week.

Metta World Peace enjoys China treat, poised for new nameMetta World Peace is going to have a new name in China.

Known in China as "Ci Shiping", a literal translation of "Metta World Peace", World Peace now plans to name himself after China's giant panda, a precious animal based in Southwest China's Sichuan province, where his new team is also based.

The new high-profile import, who is going to play for the Chinese basketball Association club Sichuan Blue Whales, is known as Ron Artest, but intends to change his name to "Panda Friend" in honor of his move to China, Changsha-based sports weekly newspaper Titan Sports reported.

Apparently excited by his China trip, the "Panda Friend" tweeted he would be visiting the pandas with his daughter, while also adding that he would be changing his name in honor of his move.

"New Chinese name coming soon. You guys are going to love it! " He posted on his Chinese twitter-like social media Sina Weibo.

The Sichuan Blue Whales also hinted the name change at their official Sina Weibo account, saying "in the new season, Ci Shiping, sorry, perhaps we should call him Panda Friend, will wait for you guys (fans) at our stadium."

The news of Artest's joining CBA was at the same time closely followed by Chinese web users as 8,960,000 entries for "Metta World Peace signs with CBA" were recorded on Baidu.com.

The news also went viral on China's social media as the topic "World Peace signs with CBA" got 25.75 million hits on Sina Weibo and an official account called "Metta_World_Peace", credited as "NBA star, serves for New York Nicks" by SinaWeibo, were followed by 967,204 followers.

As CBA's highest paid import player, the "Panda Friend" has signed a one-year deal with Sichuan Blue Whales worth $1.43 million, becoming the league's latest big names after Stephon Marbury, Tracy McGrady.
